Someone showed this to me and without more info I’m not sure what to say. I don’t believe this would be in character for the man but I would like more than a feeling to refute it. Has anyone seen it. Would someone point me to resources to look into this more. Thanks.

From what I could see it was uncharitable hearsay, and unfortunately there are some who are anxious to collect sensational (et al) things about the Church. Here, the poor man even gave the Pope the wrong first name.:crossrc:
 
The document that they base all of this “cover up” over, is about the seal of the confessional, and not about covering up sex abuse cases.

Yes, mistakes were made, but it does not appear that Pope Benedict XVI was part of the scandal.

So the supposed ‘document’ instructing bishops was about confession? I wish I could see it because the article doesn’t lead you to that conclusion. If you saw it that this is what its about that would be very helpful. Does anyone know where you might see the documentary or read this ‘document’?

I don’t have time to research it myself but maybe someone else can.
Two Vatican documents are featured, the first of which was published by the then Holy Office (now the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) in 1962. It instructed bishops on internal canonical procedures against priests accused of sexual misconduct in the context of the confessional. The second is a 2001 follow-up letter by Cardinal Ratzinger which the BBC claims was a dark secret despite the fact that it was posted to the Vatican’s website.

And of course the Pope at that time was John XXIII–you know, the one who called the whole Vatican 2 council into being. . . not the ‘evil Pius’ who had a pact with Hitler, not the ‘evil Paul’ whose Humanae Vitae showed how out of touch he was, not even John Paul II who was either the liberal’s glory or the ‘bane’ of the ultras; not even our Benedict XVI. But it is so slanted that it makes it look as though this was occurring not only during the years of the abuses but was made up solely to protect the guilty. . .and of course it’s also implied that not only did the bishops know that these people could not be treated (which was NOT known in 1962), but that they deliberately and maliciously sent them forth knowing that they would sin again. Wow, mind reading bishops. Imagine being able to know that a given person is going to do a particular sin again.
 
Every time I read yet another of these scurrilous screeds I keep picturing the poor deluded people purveying them – 'Don’t confuse me with facts! if I believe something, that makes it so!"

Wait I’m confused wikipedia said:

Doesn’t that mean the penitent would be excommunicated if the did NOT denounce the priest? So how is this a bad thing?

The confessional boxes that churches used to have and some still do are designed to stop any hankey-pankey, So this sort of thing as a long standing concern of the Church.
