White House Urges Drastic Cuts to Funds for Catholic Schools http://www.ccky.org/_borders/CCK_logo-color1.gif

Catholic Schools Need Your Help Now!

The Catholic Conference of Kentucky met with members of its Education Committee and learned of these drastic cuts to programs that effect students in our schools.

Congress is currently considering a proposed budget from the White House for fiscal year 2006 that would terminate or dramatically cut several key programs serving children in religious and independent schools. The programs include:

Title II, D – Enhancing Education Through Technology ** - ** increases the use of technology in the curriculum for students and teachers .

Title IV – Safe and Drug-Free Schools ** – ** to support violence and drug abuse prevention programs.

Title V, A – Innovative Programs - designed to provide services, materials, and equipment for educational programs that address a variety of needs.

Both Title II,D, andTitle IVare proposed forelimination, and Title V, A is proposed to becut in half!

We need you to convey to Congress how much our Catholic schools depend on continued funding for these critical programs in the “No Child Left Behind Act.”

It is critical for all members of Congress to hear from their constituents and members of the education community! Tell your representatives that these programs are vital in continuing to educate all American students in public, religious and independent schools alike.

Please contact your U.S. Senators and U.S. House Representative by phone, fax, and/or email and tell them that these programs are effective and much-needed within our schools, and that the proposed reductions and eliminations would be harmful to the students who rely upon them.

You can send an e-mail message to your U.S. Senators and Congressional representative by clicking here. To find the phone and fax number for your Congressional representative, go here.

Thank you once again for all of your support.

I wondered why one of your posts was languishing here…well…ok, count me in.

I care deeply. I started my day reading the annual report for the Archdiocese of Albany’s schools. Not encouraging. My children’s school has a wonderful technology department which I would hate to see disappear as a result of these cuts. I also have a sneaking suspicion that schools who are not Catholic and who have a defined constituency get around these cuts and receive funding via different avenues.

If we don’t speak up and hold our bishops and Catholic educators’ feet to the flame, Catholic schools will become a thing of the past which will be a disaster for our faith.

Some funding here is provided by lottery money…

also funds % college tution if student has a b average.
