Does anyone have a favorite Hymn?

Not sure if it’s my favorite, but I always liked Whatsoever You Do.

When I was young, the words were, “Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me.” I have 4 brothers, so it meant something to me.

Now they sing, “Whatsoever you do to the least of my people . …” so it’s not quite the same.

wow…how that song brings a tear to my eyes everytime I hear it!

Mine is the traditional, “Holy God we praise Thy Name” 👍
 
Though the Mountains May Fall - especially the way my sisters used to play it at mass. One of my sisters had a harmony part for the violin that almost made me cry.

I also love On Eagles Wings, Eat This Bread, and Jesus Christ is Risen Today. 🙂

Just a word about “Amazing Grace.” It is too rampant with Protestant theology which is incompatible with Catholic Doctrine, especially the line that reads “the hour I first believed.” As Catholis, we believe that we do not receive grace the “hour we first believe”. We are given grace at Baptism, which for many of us, happens when we are infants.

Many of the other hymns that are listed in people’s favorites column do not resonate well during the Liturgy. The ones written by the St. Louis Jesuits came at a time when the liturgy was in a disarray during the dismal 1970s. Whatever was traditional and beautiful was replaced with pop-inspired John Denver-sounding melodies.

Now, with Pope Benedict at the helm, we are starting to see a much-needed return to sound liturgical music.

I didn’t realize that this was about being critical of others tastes, but since you mentioned it, the whole line is “How precious did that grace appear, the hour I first believed.” Since the author was referring to his own adult conversion, there is nothing that conflicts with Catholic theology from having an epiphany about the depths of God’s grace and this being a catalyst for conversion. If you wish to resurrect it, I think there used to be a thread on this.

But it does contradict Catholic theology. The idea is that the hymns that we sing during the Mass must conform to Catholic theology. That is why we must be careful that “favorite hymns” do not contradict what the Church teaches.

Furthermore, many Protestant denominations do not believe in infant baptism. We must be careful that “favorite hymns” do not descend into the realm of “liturgical relativism”. Pope Benedict, himself, said that 'one song cannot be as good as another."
 
When I hear a hymn and it touches me, it is more the melody than the words. I never really read much into what it implies. After having read some posts, I kind of wish I could re-gain the bliss of ignorance (if you get my drift) 😊
