Fr. Michael Himes, evidently recently replied, during a Q&A after at a 2/15/12 lecture on the Sacraments, a question inquiring about gay marriage. “If it is true that there are people who are irretrievably homosexual, then it is vicious to tell them they can’t get married,” Himes said in response. “To tell someone they have to be celibate is absolutely mad.”

This seems odd. Any follow-up stories on this?

The article says after the lecture he was asked this question…I don’t know ,could he have been mis-quoted by someone? How reliable is this news source?

Sounds like the good father has missed out on proper formation in the seminary. Pray for him, please.

His statement seems worrisome in that many of our seminaries in the 70’s and 80’s were filled with active homosexuals. Many good, heterosexual men were turned away because they weren’t homosexual or didn’t accept homosexuality.

Hint: However, if it is not true that there are people who are irretrievably homosexual, then what does that say about the rest of the sentence? 😉

The Newman Society blog has an update on the comments. Fr. Himes has been border-line heretical in his teachings for some time. Unfortunately, his series Mystery of the Faith is used in my RCIA class.

I thought I was the only one who thought he was border-line heretical! We are reading one of his books, Doing the Truth in Love, in my intro theology class at a Jesuit university… I’m very disapointed.
