Does anyone here, that believes in God, actually think that God accepts gay marriage?

However, it is acceptable in certain faith traditions, including those of Native American cultures, who view homosexuality as one’s individual life destiny, as well as Quakerism, Reform (and, in many instances, Conservative) Judaism, Unitarianism, and probably others, such as the Baha’i faith perhaps. These religions would claim that G-d does allow gays to marry, no doubt for different reasons based on the specific religious teachings, and would also claim this is not merely a human invention any more than other religions’ interpretation or inspiration of G-d’s will–albeit to the contrary–is a human invention. From the Church’s perspective, gay marriage is forbidden; but this is simply not true of every religion’s perspective.
Do you know how those religions incorporate or explain the sexual/biological facts of male and female in their beliefs. Eg. What is the role of semen in a male-male relationship? As a substance - it’s only purpose is to join with an egg. Or do those religions contemplate celibate relationships?

I cannot speak for any religion except Judaism, and even here I have far from a thorough rabbinical or scholarly understanding of the entire rationale underpinning acceptance of gay marriage according to Reform as well as Conservative Judaism. According to the latter movements, celibacy is not a virtue as it is according to the Church. An unmarried man or woman is regarded as “incomplete” in Judaism, particularly if they happen to be a rabbi, and this is also, perhaps especially, true in Torah (Orthodox) Judaism. It is thus believed, though not in Torah Judaism, that a man or woman would be advised to enter into a same-sex marriage to avoid being celibate and also to avoid being promiscuous since promiscuity is equally frowned upon in Judaism. Be aware, however, that this cursory explanation constitutes only the rudiments of Jewish teaching in this regard. BTW, the Torah does not explicitly forbid female homosexual behavior, only male homosexual behavior, so that Torah Jews must incorporate other passages from the Hebrew Bible to forbid all homosexuality. Some Hebrew scholars would even argue that the Law does not forbid ANY homosexuality at all, that is, if one pays close attention to the meaning of the text according to both the Hebrew language and its context. The latter argument is debatable. While the Torah is based on both faith and reason, it is not based on biology. Procreation, though far from unimportant, is not the major purpose of marriage according to Jewish teaching, while love and companionship between partners are.

Why did you start a thread specifically seeking an argument? I mean really, you posted a thread that lacked any substance, it was just a challenge to other Catholics to debate with you. Aren’t there enough contentious threads on this site without trying to instigate another?
There have been many of those lately. I believe God loves chaste outside the marriage of a man and a woman. After that, God doesn’t care! He loves gays, and people who park in their front yard, the whole bit.

Koyla - same sex “marriage” is not an institution that builds the society. It is simply not of the same character as Marriage. That statement is not to denigrate anyone - it is just an observation of reality.

Why do you reject an institution of the kind described earlier - a legal arrangement that provides for mutual care of the partners?
Good question, one that I wonder about every time this same thread comes up, over and over and over again.

Are difficult questions or statements now a thing to be avoided?
:rotfl:
Avoided? These “difficult” questions come up almost daily.

Please pardon me if I seem course, but the thread title does not come across in my mind as a “difficult and thought provoking question to be gently mulled over by biblical scholars in a smoke filled library.”

The title is: "Does anyone here, that believes in God, actually think that God accepts gay marriage?

Please, not a SMOKE-FILLED library!

Assuming that someone is deliberately baiting people into arguments is a sin. However, I forgive you.
Well then I guess I have sinned because of the subject WORDING of the thread, IMHO sounds confrontational.

but ours is just one holy book of many, I am sure even amongst followers of our book there are those who interpret the levitical codes against homosexuality on the same level as the prscriptions against ingesting shellfish

I know you most likely don’t believe in abortion under any circumstances, but couldn’t a couple, whether straight or gay, be thinking about aborting an unborn baby with Down’s syndrome out of concern for the baby and not for selfish reasons? Or perhaps a combination of reasons? Further, are you basing your view on gay adoption and parenting on this single case alone, as if all or most gay couples think and behave alike?
Meltzer,… I liked you before you wrote this, and having wrote it does not change the fact that I still like you. Bud dude… abortion is an awful, awful thing that leads to great sadness and spiritual hurt to anyone who engages in it not to mention the killing of an innocent life who has no say in the matter. I apologize, but that truly is MHO.

Peace my friend.

You have got to be kidding me.

Seriously, meltzerboy, you have always struck me as intelligent, and an independent thinker, but in the above questions I feel like you have dropped all that and just bought the liberal line.

Have you ever met a child with Down’s Syndrome? These are some of the happiest, most joyful people in the world! How could you consider killing such a person out of generosity for that person? Do you really think being intelligent and functional is that important in life? I sometimes *wish *I had a child with Down’s Syndrome, because parents of such children often seem to have such a unique and beautiful perspective on life.

Please, for all our benefits, give us ONE unselfish reason that a person could have to abort a Down’s Syndrome baby.
Well stated Prodigal_Son. I hope you look at me like your "little too bit liberal Catholic Buddy, on abortion we agree 100% You know some of the kids I work with, but I also work with some kids with Downs Syndrome and the idea of aborting one has already brought me to tears… just now.

Explain how, if our religious texts and the way we read them to apply to our lives merely stand as one opinion among many, not to be preferred over other books or even other opinions about our own books, you define our books as “holy”. What does it mean to you, when you refer to something as “holy”? 🤷

You are lifting my comment from its context, which offers a possible unselfish reason for abortion. Since the thread itself is not about abortion, which is permissible in certain circumstances under Jewish Law, let’s not argue about this.

Thank you for the compliment.

Do you know a person with Down Syndrome who believes it would have been better to never have been born?

Maybe the OP is just looking for new angles to open up future discussions with others outside of the site? I think you’re leaping to conclusions here, based on bias. We all do that sometimes, but still.
I apologize. I was a bit testy I think the first time I responded to your comment. * 😦 You may be right, he might not know the extent that this has question has been batted around at. I still feel though that the title implies that if you believe in gay marriage, you don’t believe in God. I don’t believe in gay marriage however:

I am actually fine with civil unions. It protects the couple from predatory relatives who disown them till the obituary hits the back pages, and protects hospital visitation rights, medical decisions etc. I don’t feel the need to "admonish gay people, but I will say, the Church says outside of marriage, all should be chaste. This is between them and God.
I don’t feel ANYONE has the right to say that if I dont believe “X” I don’t believe in God.*

I most certainly believe in God and I do not presume to guess at what he does or does not accept when it comes to marriage. I do know that he left us ten commandants and a golden rule to treat others as we would like to be treated. I know that there are seven deadly sins but I do not think any of them pertain to the love of one person for another. I would leave God’s judgement to God and try to be as understanding as I can of those who would like to burden other people with their personal intolerance’s. No one is trying to make you marry someone you do not love. If you do not accept same gender marriage do not marry someone of the same gender. It really is none of your business.
lol Welcome to the forums Jacklyn284!

Not that I have that part, but behind me on the bookshelves is a TINY portion of the Talmud, a Torah, the Qur’an, a bunch of eastern philosophy stuff, and TONS of Catholic stuff. I am aware about the permissible circumstances. I apologize, we won’t argue.

PS: Interestingly enough, I have nothing on Hinduism… curious. Not enough time maybe?

Take care,

Then why did you bring it up in the first place?
I did not bring up the topic of abortion in the first place. I responded to comments and questions by Lochias and PRmerger. I finally explained the Jewish teaching on abortion and did not bring up the topic after that.
