What do you mean by “effective”? Do you mean they are producing many great saints, people who are living heroic lives of virtue, or do you mean they are popular? If the Anglicans are so happy about gay marriage (as an example), why are there Anglican-rite Catholics now? We didn’t have that when I was a kid. If Protestants are so universally loving and get such a great understanding of the Bible by interpreting it on their own, who are the people picketing funerals with the signs that say God hates gays? They aren’t Catholic. Or do those Protestants not count for some reason? And I just explained to you why I, and billions of others, do NOT give much weight to the Catholic Church’s lens for interpreting Scripture. It does NOT prove that Jesus is NOT God.
Rather, it proves that the CC has no credibility.
EasterJoy, you skipped over most of my post. Could you explain why:
Could you explain why we have to disallow gay marriage in the political arena, an arena Jesus never touched? How is that love? How is that making Christianity relevant to today’s people?
- The CC’s insistence on adhering to tradition is ineffective, and the Protestants’ espousing of modern methods is effective?
- Protestant churches have better community than Catholics?
- Protestants are willing to discuss faith, and encourage each other in faith, more openly than Catholics?
- Protestants know the Bible, teach it, and preach it better and with more charisma than Catholics?
- Every time I come close to the CC, I feel depressed and alone, and every time I come close to a Protestant church, I feel spiritually fed? This despite no Real Presence?
- Protestants are able to re-Christianize Europe and Latin America, whereas Catholics are doing nothing while we are losing Europe to Islam, the way we lost North Africa to Islam centuries ago?
If other denominations, such as the Episcopalians, Presbyterians, and some Evangelicals, have, through their academic research, concluded that it is okay to support gay marriage rights in the political arena, then why should I give their interpretation less weight than that of the Catholic Church? Aren’t other denominations as intelligent as the Catholics?
Why should I tolerate the excuses you guys make for the Catholic Church’s crimes against humanity? Why would I want to be part of an organization that commits genocide and harbors sex offenders?
I understand that maybe we need an outside lens to interpret the Bible, but why does it have to be your foggy lens? The historical abuses of the CC, and the ineffectiveness of the CC I describe in items 1-6 above, prove that the CC’s lens isn’t that great after all. No amount of Apostolic Succession will justify such a foggy lens.
Looking objectively the history of the West, couldn’t we conclude that the CC has lost its way, and the truth is now found in other churches?
Why can’t we use another lens and conclude:
A) The Bible doesn’t say anything about how to vote or act politically
B) Since Jesus never overthrew Rome, it means Jesus cared more about evangelism than political involvement
C) Jesus did say to love your neighbor as you love yourself, his 2nd commandment
D) Therefore, it is possible to be a faithful, loving Christian and support same-sex marriage rights politically
E) After all, life on Earth is a blip on the radar compared to the afterlife, so why do earthly politics really matter either way?
I’m sure I don’t know what you mean by a “better community.” There are some very good communities, yes, but universally “better” has not been my experience, and I have gone to some Protestant churches. It is kind of a ridiculous claim, when you look at it closely. For instance, in one small town where I lived, there was some kind of dispute in one of the local evangelical churches that resulted in a new congregation splitting off. Well, if you can pick up and start a new church every time people start irritating you, then I suppose you can shop around and find a group that suits you.
I don’t know what kind of “marriage” you* wouldn’t *support, based on A-E. I don’t know why you’d even bother to vote, for that matter. When it comes to the blip on the radar, though, read your Bible. To love your neighbor as yourself means NOT gratifying the desires of the flesh:
For you were called for freedom, brothers. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve one another through love. For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself." But if you go on biting and devouring one another, beware that you are not consumed by one another. I say, then: live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh. For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want. But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are obvious: immorality, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions, occasions of envy, drinking bouts, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Gal 5:13-21
Make no mistake: God is not mocked, for a person will reap only what he sows, because the one who sows for his flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows for the spirit will reap eternal life from the spirit. Let us not grow tired of doing good, for in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up. Gal 6:7-9
