Does anyone know about reiki?

People in power tend to act in a way that preserves their power. The nun I learn from is definitely not in a position of power.
Perhaps this is true. However the Church has come out against Reiki and Eastern-particularly New age-mysticism (Western ‘‘mysticism’’ too). Whether done for the spiritual wellbeing of the flock, or to consolidate power, they acted according to the will of the Church.

Does that mean it is legitimate?
Numerous posters have “drummed up” ample evidence that shows reiki is spiritually dangerous and against Apostolic teaching.
If the apple tastes good, why not take a bite?
If hospitals are using it and nursing schools are teaching it, then yes, I’d say it adds some legitimacy to it.

I haven’t seen anything concrete that Reiki is spiritually dangerous and against Apostolic teaching I think is open to interpretation.

Suggest you review this website, in particular the articles/testimonials from several Catholics.

I don’t fully understand Reiki, but my wife (a nurse) does, and there is nothing sinister or evil about her. Remember, Christ himself and his apostles used laying on of hands to heal. Many Reiki healers know any healing power they may have comes from God. Now if somebody feels their talents comes from somebody else, then you may have a problem.

Maybe in this case, the Church may be a tad wrong.

I’m not prepared to accept that. It is unfortunate that individuals think their opinions more authoritative than the Church Christ established.

So if they think it comes from God, then its A-OK, but if they think it comes from elsewhere they’re wrong? Or they’re right but consorting with evil? Where does one draw the line?

IMO, the healing power or whatever you want to call it does come from God, but if the practitioner thinks it’s coming from somewhere else, there’s the problem.

Agreed, but my thoughts and actions are informed by Scripture, the Magisterium, and Holy Tradition.
Did you bother to read the Christian Reiki site? It does quote scripture as justification for Reiki and has articles from several Catholics.

Christ and his apostles healed by the laying on of hands. This is a pretty good example, I would say.

From the Christian reiki site
When they are used together for the practice of healing, the word Rei means universal spirit, Higher Power or God. The word ki refers to the life energy that flows through all living things. Therefore, Reiki means life energy that is guided by God. Some also feel this is just another way of saying Holy Spirit.
Now, based on the translation of Rei, the word also means life energy from the universal spirit. To say that this is God is making eastern philosophy paletable to western minds. This is not Catholic thought.
While almost everyone experiences relaxation and improvements of various kinds, healing results cannot be guaranteed. It is recommended that if one has an illness or other medical or psychological condition that in addition to getting Reiki treatments, clients also consult a licensed physician or other licensed health care professional as Reiki works well in conjunction with all medical or psychological care.
This, to me, is as big a deal as the whole is it good or evil argument. Have there been people who feel better after the treatment and FORGO real medical treatments, to their detriment? If so, it should be banned.

Christ did not heal with Reiki, and I will obey Magisterium and Church teaching before bowing to the teaching of individual, erroneous Catholics.

So the Catholic Church comes out against it–but you defy their advice. But hospitals and nursing schools are using it–so it is good. Hmmm. :hmmm:

There have been many links to the Catholic Church’s stance on new age practices. You do not have ears to hear.

Yes. You have posted this silly website numerous times. Are you always so influenced by Catholics who are practicing new age voodoo against the teaching of the Church?

Did you not post a while back that she is now involved with wiccanism?

No analogy here.

They may think that it does. They may say that it does. But your Church tells you otherwise. Do not be deceived.

At least you recognize that the hierarchy of the Church can and will act, not out of spiritual concerns, but out of a motive of preserving its authority.

“]If hospitals are using it and nursing schools are teaching it, then yes, I’d say it adds some legitimacy to it.”
I work in healthcare and find that many of the things that are taught and used there are erroneous. I have worked with a Director of Nurses who did not understand when life ends and therefore wanted to intervene with a man who wished his comatose wife to stay on life support. I was an intern and knew more about end- of- life issues and arguments than her entire staff. Older nurses would have known under the Hippocratic oath the simple truth but there is an awful amount of waffling on these issues now. Catholics are one of the few groups that still bother to study and promote ethics. You said, "legitimacy?

Looking for something “concrete” in a spiritual matter is indeed a difficult task. I look for people who are well-educated and not prone towards easily following the next trend. Quite frankly, I have noticed that since the 60’s, when we stopped obeying authority (and I must agree that blind obedience is very dangerous, don’t get me wrong), more members of even our own Church, clergy and convents seem to be easily misled and are misleading. “Following your inner guide” without a strong sense of right and wrong can lead you and others to a living hell.
I don’t fully understand Reiki, but my wife (a nurse) does, and there is nothing sinister or evil about her.
I don’t think that people who do wrong are sinister or evil in the full sense of the word. But we do ENABLE others by our naivete, stubbornness, or refusal to look at the elements of evil.
I have done that at times when I was “following my own inner guide” and disobeying the essential laws of the Faith. I thought I could interpret a lot more Apostolic teachings on my own. As a parent, a sibling, a friend, a colleague, a professional, even a citizen, I messed up or colluded with others in my errors. In the “ripple effect” of my actions, I cannot imagine what evil I may have helped. The lessons of the Holocaust are certainly to pay attention to what we embrace so easily and readily as new, innovative, novel, even “traditional” and “patriotic”.
Remember, Christ himself and his apostles used laying on of hands to heal. Many Reiki healers know any healing power they may have comes from God. Now if somebody feels their talents comes from somebody else, then you may have a problem.
Call me a problem but not all healing comes from God. Some acts of evil can instantaneously heal that sickness which was caused by evil or diabolical influence in the first place. We can be easily deceived in our pain, weakness, vanity, egocentricity into believing that the latest health fad is going to free us. I’d rather be cautious here and question what is healing me and others and is this healing permanent or do I need to keep coming back for more? Unless you have a problem here with the concept of evil and diabolical influence…then we need to move away from this discussion of healing and Reiki and get down to the essentials.

There are quite a few innovations in the medical world that are new and good, but even there we must be careful. Certain medicines look good in the studies but their studies don’t last for twenty, thirty, sixty years. Yet we see the longterm effects years, perhaps generations, after regular use. I believe that it is the same with the more esoteric, or “spiritual” healing arts. Some show their errors early and up front, some take years and generations to see the damage. I look to those who study spiritual matters within a traditional framework, as well as the common sense observations of moral and ethical elders who have seen trends, fashions, and fools come and go. I study history.

I am glad the Church is slow to approve of new trends and practices. But not even there will I drink the poison Kool-Aid or worship the golden calf if the Magisterium tells me to; as a Catholic Christian I am expected to think, discern, learn and reject, even if it is wrong. But right now in history, I think we are all too easily rejecting the magisterium, and Catholic traditions as too authoritative, and, in reaction, we then drink the nearest cup of Kool-Aid offered to us in the secular or “alternative” worlds. And at first, very few people can see the harm.

In short: I trust the traditions and beliefs of our Church, I do not always trust certain individuals and movements in the Church. In medicine, I feel the same: some good traditions & beliefs, some crazy individuals and movements. Reiki, while it has certainly been raved about, has not proven itself worthy of a green light, no questions asked.

Another good post Auntie A. I just wanted to add that while people compare reiki to the laying on of hands I would say that is the only thing they have in commmon, the touch, or near touch of hands.

Hi, i’m not being confrontation, but would really like to understand it more as i do practice quantum touch (not reiki but was told it’s quite close). With quantum touch, it’s basically breathing techniques and anyway i usually say the rosary while allowing the energy to do it’s thing.

Could you shed more light specifically on the symbols associated with reiki?
Thanks for the clearing up regarding reiki. Reiki refers to a univeral lifeforce yes? A student learns how to use the lifeforce by getting attuned by the ‘master’ at different reiki levels is that right? At one of the levels, there’s use of certain symbols if i’m not mistaken.

i was told this by some one who took classes and got attuned to the first level of reiki and before getting attuned to the second level which is belive is where you learn more about the symbols dropped out as her spiritual advisor advised against it as it’s sort of venturning into non-christian domain)

While I don’t know this for sure (and you don’t either), maybe Reiki is a mini-version of the healing power of Christ. Maybe the Church is in error on this.

While I concur with the Church on most things, I don’t on a few. This may be one of them.

You call this website silly, I call it eye opening and enlightening. Could it be that the healing power of touch that even Christ used as well as his apostles, which maybe some call Reiki today does have benefit and comes straight from God, but many including the Church maybe are blind to it? Use your brain and think about it

My wife has had an interest in Wicca. Whats your point?

Bottom line is, if you have no interest in Reiki, thats fine. However, don’t criticize something that you have no knowledge about.

Can I still criticise it? I understand the concept of Ki very well.
