Does anyone plan on seeing Dunkirk?

Zimmer’s did the music? Cool!

(Even if he does crib from himself occasionally šŸ˜› )
Apparently he scores all or most of Nolan’s films.

I would like to see the movie, but it will depend on whether it is sufficiently kid-friendly, as it’s very difficult for me to do or see anything independently of my brood of children. The last movie I saw was ā€˜Despicable Me 3’ over the weekend, and I’m thinking of imposing a no more superhero movies rule for myself, just to vouchsafe my sanity. Consider it a cry for help.

The first big-ticket WW2 film in dog years where the heroes are non-American. Should be interesting.

The moment you see ā€œChristopher Nolanā€ attached to a film, you know it’s gonna be good. So the answer to your question is an outstanding YES!
I had no idea Christopher Nolan was involved with this film. That won’t keep me from seeing it.

A little historical background. The encirclement at Dunkirk was a disaster. There were French troops there as well. The British left behind a great deal of equipment which the Germans put to use. All of the British forces at Dunkirk were not evacuated. Hitler’s stop order meant that his tanks would not finish off those trapped but his Air Force was allowed to bomb and strafe. The British were concerned about defending England and did not commit a great number of RAF aircraft, but new information has come to light even as I write this about this aspect.

So much about the invasion of France up to Dunkirk makes very little sense. I’m not saying the French did not put up a fight but when one looks at even the specialist books, how all of this came about has a great deal of missing pieces. Since I’ve read enough of what supposedly happened, the Fall of France and Dunkirk makes little sense. It was not just the speed of events, but British equipment, especially its Air Force at the time, was not up to the performance level of the Germans. I’ve seen hundreds of period photos of Fairey Battles and numerous types of French aircraft on the ground. Select British aircraft that crashed in reasonably good condition were sent off on French railway cars for evaluation. A number of captured French aircraft were also used by the Germans.

It should be an interesting movie for anyone but it still falls into the ā€œoddā€ category for me.

It’s always intriguing to read or see a movie on the events of what occurred in historical battles. Hopefully, this movie will give insights to what took place there at Dunkirk. At the early stages of World War Two, the German army and their Panzer divisions entrapped the British army and their allies at this small seashore town in France. For some reason, Hitler did not allow the army and tanks to go in and annihilate them! God’s hand perhaps? It would not be the first time Hitler made an odd decision to refrain from taking the advantage of a bad situation for the other side! Some historians have written that perhaps he was purposely showing a sign of mercy to the British hierarchy as he was possibly hoping to make a non-aggression pact with the British government (as he went on to do with the Soviet Union, signing a 10 year non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union, but it was very short lived) so that he could focus on attacking the Soviet Union first! But, as we know, that did not happen and Germany was once again as in World War I fighting on two fronts , the west and the east. Had Dunkirk had a different ending, the war could have taken quite a daunting turn for the Allies…and possibly would have had the U. S. joining in much earlier than December 7, 1941!
Here is a good documentary which offers a good explanation I think.

43:00 - 47:05

I hope this has helped

I live about an hour away from Dunkirk (Dunkerque, as we know it here). This movie has been big news locally since filming began, and was released in France yesterday.

Not being a cinephile by any stretch of the imagination, I rarely darken the doors of a movie theatre. In this case, however, I’ll make an exception. We’ll probably go next week.

I started watching it yesterday, but didn’t have time to watch the whole thing.
I need to find the time.
It’s a very interesting documentary, but if you go to just 43:00 - 47:05 then it’s at the point I was referring to, where it appears it was more of a showdown between Hitler and his Generals which was more important to Hitler than letting the Allies escape at Dunkirk, was more about the Principal of the matter that Hitler was in charge no matter how nonsensical the order seemed (which Dunkirk was). Thank goodness for it too, as it allowed the Allies to escape.

God Bless You

Thank you for reading

OK. Thanks. Will try to watch it over the weekend.

My uncle Charlie was evacuated from Dunkirk, he didn’t talk much about it but was quite traumatized by the whole thing, waiting on the shore for a boat, being shot at by German planes and watching friends die. He got back to England on a boat that was normally a river ferry, crewed by two ancient men and their dog!

I hope to go and see the film next week some time, I really hope it’s good. I’ve given up on war films ever being accurate (ever since Errol Flynn won the war single-handed!).

I did see Dunkirk this morning. It was very good. I am not that familiar with Nolan’s other films. I did get confused a few times with the sequence of the scenes. But then I realized what he was doing and it made sense.
Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branaugh were very good.
It was suspenseful and no matter where these soldiers went,
they were a target for the Nazis.
I am glad I saw the movie.

Definitely! I heard just today that it is supposed to be one of the best war movies ever made. And…Harry Styles from One Direction is in it. If you don’t know about Dunkirk, this is reason enough to go see it. Basically, Dunkirk was when the Germans were defeating the French during World War II and the British had to go in and rescue all the allied troops from the shores of France before the Germans got them. There, I guess you don’t have to see it now.

So I saw the movie and enjoyed it. I did have a few problems with the movie, which I’m putting in the same color as the background for spoilers. Highlight the area below to read it:
  1. Christopher Nolan did his Christopher Nolan thing of jumping all around the timeline. It’s something useful in movies like his Memento or in Quentin Tarantino’s movies where a reveal from the past works better after seeing the future, but it’s completely unnecessary here.
  2. There is a throwaway set of lines where two British officers are talking about the tanks surrounding them. One asks why the tanks are holding, and the other says why bother when they can pick them off on the beach. It’s treated as a strategic move by the Axis and not a blunder. I guess it makes sense so as not to undercut the direness of the situation to say the Allies got extremely lucky there.
  3. There are a grand total of just two German planes shown attacking the British ships and soldiers.
Still I’d definitely recommend the movie.
