The air’s gone out of his tire for some time now. I find the whole thing repetitive and pointless.

Anyone think there’s a point to the show?

I still listen occasionally but I don’t take him too seriously. Mostly I turn him on when the local NPR affiliate gets boring. It’s an interesting contrast switching from NPR to Rush or other talk radio.

Apparently Rush’s audience is still pretty big. What I don’t know is what’s “real” and what’s the schtick. And where that line is for Rush may be different from members of the audience. I don’t think the Republicans take marching orders from him (as some in the media would have us believe, or perhaps as Rush would have us believe the media would have us believe). But he seems to be in step with what a lot of other conservative voices say. I still find him more entertaining in his delivery than, say, Hannity. His on-air persona is arrogant in a funny way, as opposed to a loud-mouthed way.

I had the thought that for Rush and many of the other talk show hosts, the on-air persona may be different or more extreme than their personal beliefs. I thought of that in contrast with Colbert where it’s also a put-on but it’s like a completely open and over-the-top “inside joke”. I always keep in mind that all of this is to make money, and what seems to generate the best ratings is taking a more hard-line or strident position.

I certainly don’t.

It’s just a lot of sabre rattling and I don’t think healthy political discussion.

nope, but certainly many people consider him the voice of the GOP which, to me, is scary.😦

Not really. There is Rush and Hannity on one side, and Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews on the other.

All of whom do more damage than good.

I’ve listened to him occasionally, found him informative and entertaining. The most I listened to him was driving cross country a couple of times. What’s really funny to me is the way folks characterize him and attack him as hateful. Never heard him utter anything that would even come close to being hateful or racist.

As you said- he found a market niche and fills it. Makes no bones about the fact that he’s in a business first and foremost. His model works because he’s truthful, presents the facts and then his take on them. Kind of like Stewart. You can agree or disagree with them, but their goal is to entertain their target audience, so they tend towards material that aligns with their target audiences perceptions of the world.

A person who is in that business told me he is an act. He is not really like you hear him on the radio, and is actually pretty normal. It’s like any other form of entertainment. He makes money from his stage persona.

Yes, liberals of all stripes are shocked, SHOCKED  , to discover that there are conservatives remaining in America.

I think that many Americans have drunk the media Kool-Ad for so long that their critical thinking ability has atrophied.

Sometimes I listen to him for comedy and entertainment purposes but he gets me so angry I switch over to NPR.

I spent the last 21 years of my working career as a commercial truck driver traveling the roads of America. Many of those miles were spent tuned into Rush’s program. I agree he has a distinctive radio persona. My wife, who used to ride with me often, did not care for his presentation. But we both agreed on his content. Especially his focus on the need for smaller government and fiscal responsibility.

I was once a fan, but ISTM that he’s lost it to a great extent since the problems originating with his hearing loss.

The show used to be funny, now it’s all anger.

I wouldn’t put Rush on nearly a par of ridiculousness as the likes of Rachel Maddow. However, I fizzled out on him several years ago—it was really the same song and dance, When push came to shove, he was more loyal to the Republican party than reality. I think the straw that did it for me was his defense of Bush’s appointment of the more liberal Harriet Myers to the Supreme Court. Thanks to an uproar, the U.S. ended up with Samuel Alito instead. But Rush was so defensive of Bush on just about anything and seemed to put party ahead of reality way too often. His whole bit on SUVs was also a bit much. For a student of economics, the fact that he championed the sale of vehicles which de facto increase demand on gasoline for the sake of his principle, “if you have the money, spend it on yourself”, also kind of put me off. At some point, I think he may have lost his humble beginnings in Missouri.

All that being said, in his day, he set the standard for digging deeper into a story and is arguably the biggest reason today why people justifiably don’t trust big commercial media.

Rush is a defender of the unborn child @ every opportunity. He has never waivered.

Saw Rush’s speech in recent past & Greta Van Susteran’s interview with him: to the point & insightful. I think that is where Rush is at his best. As far a siding with Repubs, maybe so but sadly few decent Dem’s voted in especially in Congress. Rush, Glenn Beck, Fox News & even EWTN make it difficult for those who wish to put on the “emperor’s new clothes”. You may dislike their style but don’t confuse with their message. It won’t come from George Soros’ people. Someone has to get the word out to the masses what is going on! For those responsible for voting away our rights, hold their feet to the fire & make them accountable & vote out if necessary.

You may think I sound a “little” forceful, well, read on…

Moral parameters are narrowing in on Christians around the world but worst of all HERE in America. Ex.: marriage is redefined, Church is forced by gov. to shut down adoption agencies; this commenced in Massachusetts. Washington & Oregon allow euthanasia & Wash voted in liberal marijuana law, a train wreck for sure. How convenient! It’s MUCH closer that Holland. However, Pro Lifers are making inroads after 40 years of heinous legislation. I’m finding “traditional Catholic” opinion discounted as archaic in the media & will see it conveniently tagged as “hate speech” if it isn’t happening already.

Cardinal George expressed chilling statement said a while back essentially: I will die in my own bed, my successor will die in jail & his successor will be martyred. - here in the USA? Isn’t that impossible? Here? Kidding me?

Chris Matthew’s tirades are appalling in my estimation. NPR lacks balance; surprising as they are run with a big chunk of government funding. No money back guarantee there!

I suggest the eye-opening **Catholic League ** daily emails from Dr. William Donahue; EWTN shows discuss governmental & international policies: Raymond Arroyo “The World Over”, Johnette Benkovic’s “Women of Grace” on EWTN TV, Teresa Tomeo “Catholic Connection” on EWTN Radio to name a couple. They substantiate a lot of what’s going in our country & how affects the Church in America. Notice I didn’t say the “American Church”. 👍

Sometimes Rush makes a good point. Other times he raves. I don’t listen to radio too often so I mainly only run across him if someone posts something he says to me on FB. Most of the posts I get attributed to him are pretty spot-on with my own political beliefs–but again, I’m not having to listen to him for an hour–just read a short post on some particular conservative thought he is expressing. i can usually accept that with no problem. I can also take a certain amount of Hannity–to a point. I do enjoy O’Reilly–though sometimes even he’s a bit arrogant too and I absolutely hate–and will turn off—anything where people are yelling over other people and I can’t follow the conversation. As to Chris Mathews–if he actually believes even half of what he says on TV, its amazing he hasn’t been signed up for organ donation long ago–as he’s obviously been brain dead for the last 10 years. Maybe if he’d pull his head out of Obama and Reed’s rear ends long enough to take a good deep breath however, he could be bagged with O2 and revived to some semblance of a quasi-life. But even that is a little doubtful with him–he may be too far gone…
