A couple of thoughts regarding your last comment, has it occurred to you that when the state steps in, the people withdraw? Compare Europe with America and the rate of charitable giving. In Europe the state has a strong presence and the Church along with other charitable endeavors has a small presence. Further when the state steps in, it allows people to get off the hook so to speak. I’ve had MANY Leftist friends claim that there is no reason for them to give to charity since their tax dollars are used to help the poor. As Catholics, we are not supposed to blow off Jesus’ teaching to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, etc. This is common misconception on the religious right.
“This imbalance is the result of ideologies which defend the absolute autonomy of the marketplace and financial speculation. Consequently, they reject the right of states, charged with vigilance for the common good, to exercise any form of control. A new tyranny is thus born, invisible and often virtual, which unilaterally and relentlessly imposes its own laws and rules.” - Evangelii Gaudium 56
The Church teaches that the state has a duty to promote the common good. Maybe you think individual charity is more effective than government welfare. Empirical evidence stands against you but for those of us who believe individual charity is insufficient, the state must step in.
Further if you look at populations that HAVE become literal wards of the state, the Native American population is a major example, having the state treat them like incompetent children has in fact made them into incompetent children.
Finally, if the state operated under Catholic social teaching, using subsidiarity as a guide, I think its impact would be far more effective. Instead the statist trend is to federalize and nationalize these efforts.
Obamacare anyone?
As to the thread and not to be totally off track, Rush is very intelligent, well read, and strikes fear in the Left because he does speak the truth about their methods and madness. Yes he’s a bit overblown but recall he’s an entertainer, not a CSPAN news reporter.
His perspective on the Pope is one who doesn’t really understand Catholicism. Pope Francis is not saying anything new or different or untrue. Further I know no one, even the most rapacious capitalist, who claims the state has NO role. I think Pope Francis’ words are taken as what would happen if such were true. The argument then is on the scope of the state’s efforts and when it is appropriate to step in.
