Does art prove the existence of God?

In “The Everlasting Man” didn’t GK Chesterton use the existence of art, going back all the way to cave art, to say there was something unique about humans? Art isn’t just something that evolved from ape behavior because animals don’t do anything of the sort. So at the time way back when humans were painting pictures of animals on the walls of caves, they were, well, human. Art as evidence of a human soul?
 
In the philosophical study of aesthetics we can appreciate that man has the ability to see beauty in art and architecture and all created existence in a way that animals don’t appear to have. Does this prove the existence of God? I cannot make the connection however it confirms in my mind as a Christian that we are created in His likeness as we have an inkling of His creative appreciation of His created.

The INK-ling. Is it black, blue, red? Is it in a fountain pen or ball point?🤷
 
Personally I would say that religious inspired art is an expression of the artists longing for God.

Some of the Turner prize stuff simply proves that there’s one born every minute.

Aborted post birth, isn’t that another thread entirely?

Either way viewing God inspired art is like listening to beautiful music or enjoying sunlight on a warm day. Words tend to get in the way in my experience.

I got what you meant. There is quite a difference between Michaelangelo’s “David” and a bottle of urine with a crucifix inside!:eek:
 
Art can be used to make idols and false gods, as well as statues of Saints, so art in itself doesn’t prove the existence of God. It’s a gift, a tool man can use for good or for bad.

😃 Sure is.

I once saw a lady in a modern art gallery staring at some lockers you could pay a pound for to hold backpacks and the like as you walked around. She was flicking through her guide book and trying to find the name of the “installation”, I didn’t have the heart to tell her.

Still to each their own.

Mmm, can you prove that D is not God’s last name? If it is not, you must be thinking about the Trinity are you?

Learn to avoid using that slang. If you want to be a good Catholic stop using it. It is a Holy Name. I would be content if you mean god(s) D***it.
