Does Darwin's theory of evolution contradict Catholicsm?

Gorgias:
Actually, this analysis comes from Scripture scholars, not Darwinian scientists.
Oh, let me guess … the “Scripture scholars” who claim Genesis 1 is a poem are also ‘scholars’ who also support evolution?
No, not by definition. Oh, I’m sure that there are Scripture scholars who believe in theistic evolution, but that doesn’t run hand-in-glove with this interpretation.

As I recall, Dr Scott Hahn has lectured on the “Genesis creation narrative as epic poem”, and if you know anything about Dr Hahn, then you know that he defends Scriptural narrative as historical where appropriate.
I would wager that no theologian ever thought of Genesis 1 as a poem until the advent of Darwinism.
Offhand, I don’t know. However, I do know that “correlation does not imply causation”: if your statement is true, then we could equally validly say that “no theologian ever thought of Genesis 1 as a poem until the advent of the NFL”… and you wouldn’t assert that the NFL is the cause of particular Scriptural exegeses, now, would you? 😉
An “evening watch” was a standard unit of time used in the era of Moses? What nonsense. An “evening watch” was no doubt less time than a day, but that doesn’t mean it was used as a standard unit of time
It – and the other watches of the day – were used to portion off periods of time within a day. In other words, it meets the criteria of the challenge you raised: there were measures of time, smaller than ‘a day’, in the time of the narratives of the Pentateuch.

The current proposal is that God selected two almost-humans and just dropped souls into them which contradicts Church teaching. And cannot be proven without the Church giving us a proper understanding of Divine Revelation. Two true literal human beings are our first parents.

The strange theory is that we somehow woke up one day and began to create “things to worship” for some reason that cannot be shown to be true.

God can do whatever He wants with what is called nature. Like raising the dead.

all the way back to “Adam”, whom we know now never existed.
If you’re going to critique the theological views of Catholics who disagree with you, at least represent their arguments accurately, please.

We don’t have the freedom to suggest that “Adam never existed”. There may be non-Catholics who make that claim, but that’s not a claim that we’re free to make (and still be faithful to Church teachings).

There are other claims that might be made, but that’s not one of them.
But I wonder why the Lord revealed the awesome truth through an agnostic/atheist and not the Church?
Because God doesn’t reveal science through the Bible, nor does He reveal Salvation History through the 6-o’clock newscast, maybe? 😉
Jesus, being Divine, must have known about the truth of evolution, but said nothing.
Jesus also didn’t mention that the earth revolves around the sun, and the solar system around the galaxy. I don’t see you all bent out of shape over those omissions of scientific fact, though…

Origen was well before Darwin:
“What intelligent person will suppose that there was a first, a second and a third day, that there was evening and morning without the existence of the sun and moon and stars? Or that there was a first day without a sky?”
  • as quoted in the Philocalia
IIRC Augustine also said that creation was instantaneous, and did not take 144 hours. He got that one right.

Yeah, they know all this from a millimeter long bone.
Bone? No, Saccorhytus didn’t have any bones, they came later. This was a very primitive Deuterostome and among other things was ancestral to starfish; no bones in starfish. The whole animal was a millimetre long.

Sorry, meant to say fossel.

Jesus, being Divine, must have known about the truth of evolution, but said nothing. On the contrary, He backed the fairy tale about “Adam”. God certainly works in mysterious ways!

More importantly, Jesus could have maybe mentioned germ theory and prevented the Black Death. But, as we all should know (and the Church teaches), Jesus did not have omniscience during his corporeal life, at least in the sense of knowing all scientific knowledge - see the catechism paragraph 472.

Yes , you are right, my eyes had been hurting trying to figure out this site, Lol.

Question : how did the porcupine ever make it to become a porcupine ?

It exists, therefore it… uh… Or just like the armadillo… or something.

I don’t know. How did the Koala Bear discover that Eucalyptus leaves/trees were nearby? What did it eat before these trees existed? Everyone knows that porcupines just had normal hair before unguided chance turned some into needle-like projections. Otherwise, it hid a lot.
