That is good thinking and a good question. Perhaps Lehi’s group did bring flax seeds with them to the New World, but found they didn’t grow as well (this is true in the New World even now) as the cotton plants they found native to the continent, and shifted to cotton. Since they were only a small group of people, it would be totally unlikely that such a shift would be traceable in archeology.
