Does God have human emotions or are his emotions somehow different than ours?

Hi Big,

God is one unchangeable, eternal act. He has no emotions. As a matter of fact, pure spirits cannot have emotions, since emotions are a physical reaction.

We think of love, for example, as an emotion, but there can be love without emotion. Love is wanting good things for another person. The Trinity is a community of love and creation is an act of love.

Verbum

Of course he does, He tells us so: He has love, hate, jealousy. For Him to create those in us;, and as we are a reflecton of Him; He must posses those emotions. The difference is the control of emotions. For man, he is a slave to his emotions whereas the father is not.

No, I believe that when He tells us that he is using analogous language so that we can understand.

Verbum has it right.

Scientifically we can show that emotions have a seat in the mind, in the physical. God the Father has no physical body so He does not have emotions. God the Son did have a physical body and now has a glorified body so He does have emotions. Not sure if the glorified body experiences this but we will find out.

It is a dogma of the Catholic Faith that the Divine Nature of the Trinity is unchanging. Emotion signifies change; a person cannot have emotions and never change.

“We firmly believe and confess without reservation that there is only one true God, eternal infinite (immensus) and unchangeable, incomprehensible, almighty and ineffable, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit; three persons indeed, but one essence, substance or nature entirely simple.” CCC n. 202

I. Passions

1763 The term “passions” belongs to the Christian patrimony. Feelings or passions are emotions or movements of the sensitive appetite that incline us to act or not to act in regard to something felt or imagined to be good or evil.

1764 The passions are natural components of the human psyche; they form the passageway and ensure the connection between the life of the senses and the life of the mind. Our Lord called man’s heart the source from which the passions spring.

God does not have a ‘sensitive appetite’ (as St. Thomas puts it), and so He does not have emotions in His Divine Nature. God is not inclined to act or to not act. He is all actuality, and no potentiality.

No. God is not human, and so does not have human emotions.

Jesus, in his humanity, certainly experienced human emotions.

I think I am going to go with C.S. Lewis on this one " We reason cause God reasons."
If God doesn’t have emotions then where do we get ours from? Evolution?

So then we get hungry because God gets hungry? we sleep because God sleeps?

For Catholics the Catechism has the answer as shown by Ron in post #6. God does not have emotions.

Others can speculate all they wish on this but for Catholics the issue is answered.

What are the best scriptures to use to back this up?
First, we as Catholics are a Bible only Faith. Knowing and understanding philosophy and reading some Aquinas might help you out.

Second, here is a scriptural reference from the CCC paragraphs listed.

[bibledrb]Mark 7:21-23[/bibledrb]

Don’t know if that helps you but again, we are not a Bible only Church.

The Father is not just a spirit, the Father isn’t just a light, THE FATHER IS EMOTION!

Scripture tells us he laughs: “But You, O Lord, shall laugh at them; You shall have all the nations in derision.” Psalms 59:8
“The Lord laughs at him, for He sees that his day is coming.” Psalms 37:13
“Darts are regarded as straw; He laughs at the threat of javelins.” Job 41:29

Scripture tells us he gets angry: “When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The LORD’s **anger **burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down and he died there beside the ark of God.” 2 Samuel 6:7

And you can bet your bottom dollar that God cry’s!

Amen to that!:yup::clapping:

Sorry but this is all analogous language, so that we can somewhat understand God.

It also says that God is a hand or that God is an eye but we know that those are also just analogous language.

You really must study scripture to understand this.

So then we get hungry because God gets hungry? we sleep because God sleeps?
Emotions and physical needs are related but are not the same thing. They have different origins. So we can love because God loves but not hunger because He hungers.

Exactly. Have you never seen a non-human animal express fear or anger in their body or facial expressions?
So because both animals and I use the bathroom, I somehow evolved from them?
Animals and humans have the same Creator.

No, the Father is not emotion.

No, the Father is not emotion.
Agreed; certainly not from a human standpoint. Emotions is a human context of comprehension to describe human feelings.

And God is Not Human although perhaps there is an incomprehensible quality in God where there exist a essence of Godly emotion beyond human understanding.
