Does God want us to learn hard and gain more knowledge?

There is nothing wrong with education, as long as you don’t make an idol out of it.
 
Ignorance is a sin only if you have the ability to educate yourself in things Godly and fail to do so.
 
Yes,out of laziness ,if you didn’t study its a sin because ,God’'s will for a student is to study ,the present state in your life, laziness is a capital vice or one of the 7 deadly sins.
 
He answered, "‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’. (Luke 10:27).

We should use “all the means” that God gave us to come closer to Him and to serve our fellow humans.

A doctor who doesn’t study and keep up with his/her field is engaging in an act of injustice, and offense against justice and charity.
 
In case I was born in a poor family and my family couldn’t afford to let me go to school.
Here, because of the situation of the family, suppose you didn’t study then its not a sin ,its was the will of God in your state of life,but deliberate ignorance is a sin ,
