Does Gun Control Prevent Gun Crime?

One of my pro-gun-control friends is an avid camper. And so I asked him what he would do if threatened by some passersby/ psycho-crazy killers, whilst out in the wilderness. He said he would unlimber his cell phone and call the state police. I said that if after two days or so, there was no police presence at his campsite, what would he then do?

He had no answer, apart from making some pre-paid funeral plans.

I suggested that waving around a shotgun might encourage the marauders to move along.

This is a major issue: to wit, who are the first-responders? Police? Or the victim and the victim’s immediate neighbors?

Police might not get there in time. In fact, it is highly likely that the police WILL NOT get there in time to arrest the miscreants.

In numerous disasters/crimes and other violent events, the “official” first responders did not arrive until it was too late and could only conduct a body count.

Often bureaucrats have taken violent exception to on-the-scene victims and their neighbors taking action. This has happened in case-after-case. Yet the bureaucrats have not actually DONE anything, except increase the number of pages in the manual of standard operating procedures. To bureaucrats, words count for as much as actual action.
This is what we expect from the DRNJ(Democratic Peoples Republic of New Jersey). They don’t mind if you and your family are slaughtered, just don’t hurt the assailant. It makes no sense to me.

And this type of thinking goes against the teachings of the Catholic Church which states that we are duty bound to take greater care of our own lives and that of our loved ones than that of an assailant.

Don’t tell them that, you might hurt their feelings. I don’t know why people have to be like that. I guess it has a little to do with where people grow up and how they are taught. I was born in South Carolina and raised in North Carolina. North Carolina is fairly open to gun ownership, except for one or two towns near Raleigh. South Carolina seems to be deathly afraid of guns. Sometimes, not all the time now, I carry my Sig P229 with me in a holster and have only once had someone say anything to me. The guy wanted to know if I was a cop. He wasn’t scared, just curious. I wish more people were as open to their own lives as they are the lives of the unborn. Without us, they(the unborn) have no hope.

9mm, .40S&W or .357Sig? I’ve got a .40S&W. Been thinking of converting it to a .357Sig but I’m not sure if that will buy me anything. I’m sort of a bigger-is-better type of guy 😃

.40 S&W, the .40 is better suited for human or animal targets(I know that sounds really bad) and the .357 SIG is better for shooting through doors and other objects. The NC State Highway Patrol uses the .357 Sig for that very reason. The .40 S&W is a very popular round among local law enforcement agencies here.

The .357 Sig, is based on a necked down .40 S&W. It is a smaller bullet, but has a higher velocity. Both rounds have their uses and also pros/cons. I like my .40 S&W. It has a punchy recoil, but not as overpowering as the .45 ACP I had a few years ago(Not that it was all that bad, just hard on the followup shot).

I qualified with at least a 90% on the range for my armed security license(state minimum score), I think it was actually a 95% but I don’t remember off the top of my head. What is odd, leo’s in NC only have to qualify with an 80% score. We had to shoot better than the cops to be licensed. I guess they wanted to make sure we hit what we were aiming at.

The .40S&W is my favorite caliber. Got the 229 & 239 in it. Also, the 4040, 4006 and the 4013 but the .357Sig keeps calling me – hear that recoil is milder and the round is more accurate. Also, understand that it’s much louder.

It is louder and more accurate. Night sights(properly sighted) are a necessity for these guns. Also it is best to use ammunition with low flash due to night vision issues otherwise. The .357 Sig has a brighter flash than the .40 S&W, which is significant in itself. The .357 Sig has a flatter trajectory and a longer range, but at 15 to 25 yards is almost equal to the .40 S&W. The only difference is it’s penetration abilities and perceived recoil.

And when self control fails, as it did in Cho’s case, the rest of us must rely on self defense – as the Virginia Tech students were sadly unable to do.
I completely agree. I guess I should have elaborated a little. It seems to me that over the last 20 years or so people in the United States have embraced a more violent society – a “thug” mentality – which I believe results from the types of movies, TV shows, video games and music children are constantly exposed to.

For example, when I was growing up, there were shows that glorified good moral conduct: Andy Griffith, Leave it to Beaver, and The Beverly Hillbillies (I know, I know, Granny was violent when she got riled up). Compare that to what the popular shows are now.

I wonder if there’s any similar parallel, although different in scope, in our history. I think you may be on to something.

And now there are songs and videos that glorify violence – espacially against women. But the Reverend Al Sharpton assures us, “that’s culture.”

It saddens me a bit to see Australians and Americans at odds on this topic. Especially as our two nations have such a similar backround and have been the staunchest of allies. If gun control is working in Australia then I stand and applaud the Australian people for the moral and social fitness of thier nation. The story in the Unites States however is quite different. While the nation is hardly lawless it is certainly not the safest place in the world. The police in the United States as are all government agencies are so cripled by the ACLU and lawsuites that they are hardly actively protecting citizens. Aside from the violent crime that is commonplace in our nation (I live outside Baltimore, MD) their seems to be a trend in this nation towards shooting sprees and masacres. This from my observation has more to do with the american media than anything else. What makes these so sucessful in the United States is the lack of weaponry carried by the average citizen. In every instance guns where a part of the massacre. In every instance guns ended the massacres as well. Had one or two of the students killed at VT been armed themselves many lives could have been saved. Moreover the lack of arms amongst the citizen serves only to encourage criminals to act violently as we have willingly given them power over ourselves. An armed populace not only serves a a effective detterent, but will also help to minimize the duration and severity of a violent rampage.

Yes, you are completely correct. I remember when Katie Couric was still on the morning show, she interviewed a couple of people who helped stop and subdue an armed man who was trying to go on a rampage. She tried to make a big deal out of how not anyone could have done this, but only trained people.

The men, who had concealed weapons permit tried to politely contradict her, but she would have none of it. Even though she did the story, she wanted to minimize the statements from the men who said that if they did not have weapons, the rampage would have killed many.

Katie is an example of a person who believes she’s so much smarter than the rest of us that her imagination trumps everyone else’s hands-on experience.😃

Is that not par for the course with the MSM and many liberals.

Gun control cheers the rapist and the murderer and empowers tyrants like Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot and Stalin.

"We are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights"

My right to keep and bear arms is a God given right enumerated
by the American Constitution.

If the pilots of the airliners on September 11, 2001 had been carrying pistols, they could have ended the hijackings instantly (just by shooting one of the hijackers as he started swinging his box cutter) and stopped the Jihad in its tracks.

Let’s introduce some facts to the debate - read the following article about the Australian experience:

theage.com.au/news/opinion/a-safer-place-after-howards-gun-buyback/2006/04/27/1145861484114.html

Make sure you read both pages. The last line states:

“In 2002-03, Australia’s rate of 0.27 gun-related homicides per 100,000 population was one-fifteenth that of the US.”

The buy-back has greatly reduced the number of mass-shootings, and there has been a marginal per-capita decline in overall homicides (all weapons).

I don’t have a big problem with people being licenced to own guns, provided sensible controls are in place that prevent access to them by mentally unstable people. I have a problem with those guns being semi-automatic or automatic, which are useful only for mass killings of other people.

I guess my AR15 is malfunctioning because it has not jumped off the wall and shot anyone or has it done any mass killings.

My friends had a machine gun shoot and a bbq last week and they didn’t commit mass murder either, I’m gonna have to tell them they’re doing something wrong.

There has never been a mass murder at a gun show, despite every kind of gun and ammo being available, thats because if you try to commit mass murder at a gun show you wouldn’t get past 2 or maybe 3 before you get shot by someone.

Mass murders can only be done to an unarmed group.

The Virginia Tech campus is a gun free zone and the killer had a lot of unarmed victims. These guys never go to a gun show, did you ever wonder why?

The biggest mass murders in the last couple of centuries were all committed by the same criminal…the government.

You lot in Eurabia and Arabstalia can keep your insane nazi style gun laws.
