Does it bother anyone else but me

God did not make rubbish !!!
That’s true. Strictly speaking, God made us sinless, then we chose to be rubbish.

I’m sorry this is so upsetting to you, but you and I and all people truly are not worthy of the God’s love. But calm down, it’s ok. That’s what’s so miraculous about the God’s love, is that we can receive it anyway, with the proper attitude of penitence and obedience, even though we are not worthy of it.

No it never bothers me to pray words taken directly from sacred scripture, especially during Mass. I don’t think my personal preference is even on the table when it comes to any aspect of Mass.

but to say unworthy

why do they (the church) have us to say that. And then why do we go ahead and receive him if were unworthy??
there is no “they” at Mass or in the Church, we all are the Church, we all say this prayer together because it is true of all of us, from the pope on down to the rest of us sinners in the pews. Only those who have already been canonized can claim to have attained holiness. We are made worthy through Christ alone because he choses to give this gift, and we admit that in this prayer.
but I still find it offensive to have us say that ,
do you also find Christ’s response to the centurion offensive, when he commended the man for his faith and humility? if you have problems with Mass prayers taken from scripture better take the matter up with Christ himself. The Church does not put words in His mouth.

when we have to say

“Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I’ll be healed”

why can’t we say something like

Lord I love you, come in and purify me

but to say unworthy

why do they (the church) have us to say that. And then why do we go ahead and receive him if were unworthy??
We are unworthy because we are sinners. Sin is an offense against God and thus because we renege against His love, we are unworthy of it.

thank you all for your view points and well I understand every thing yous are saying, it could very well be in how we define different words in our mind.

Humility and worthy are two different words for me . Yes the Centurion said he was not worthy in Lk 7, and Mattew but not in John 4. And yes Jesus was so in awe that a high ranking Centurion that cared so much for his low servant , and was a Roman, could lower himself, humble himself and ask Jesus for healing for his servant, and Jesus said he had not seen so much faith.

Jesus as far as I know never said anyone was not worthy, but he did speak alot about humility.

As a sinner and weak human I need Jesus more than ever, and because of that I also take comfort in how Jesus went to Zacchaeus house to eat.

Jesus suffered so terribly at the Cross for us to show us how much he loves us, I do believe if Jesus was on Earth he would be down at the homeless shelthers eating and feeding people.

and yes that humbles me greatly to know that he still loves me as weak and sinful as I am, but I keep trying everyday knowing how much he loves me and everyone.

So hey I love you all and thank you for your opinions. Please don’t take offense and forgive me for asking.

:thumbsup:What a wonderful attitude you have. I can tell you that you needn’t apologize for simply asking questions. And I can tell from your response that you have more than a few things to teach me about leading a Christ-like life.

God bless.

I developed a problem with it after a while. My thinking went something like this:

“My parents (mother especially) and many so-called friends have been telling me I was trash since the day I’m born and now the Church, which I hoped would heal me, is saying virtually the same thing?”

Wasn’t happy about it. Just wanted to hear I wasn’t trash. Still do.

But the more I studied, the less I equate the judgments of parents, friends and family with what the Church says.

Doesn’t mean I still don’t get my back up about it now and again, but it’s different from being harangued by people who may not have your best interest at heart. At that point in the Mass where we say ‘I am not worthy… (sorry that I can’t recall the New Missal changes!!),’ I really mean it.

Jesus as far as I know never said anyone was not worthy, but he did speak alot about humility.
**Luke 17: 7-10 **
7 “Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’? 8 Won’t he rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’? 9 Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? 10 So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’
On our own, we are not worthy to receive any of the graces that God gives us.
From the CCC
2007 With regard to God, there is no strict right to any merit on the part of man. Between God and us there is an immeasurable inequality, for we have received everything from him, our Creator.
2008 The merit of man before God in the Christian life arises from the fact that God has freely chosen to associate man with the work of his grace. The fatherly action of God is first on his own initiative, and then follows man’s free acting through his collaboration, so that the merit of good works is to be attributed in the first place to the grace of God, then to the faithful. Man’s merit, moreover, itself is due to God, for his good actions proceed in Christ, from the predispositions and assistance given by the Holy Spirit.
Saying that we are not worthy reminds us of that fact. A loving God chose to send his son as a gift. Not because of our own merits. Only his sanctifying grace, which strengthens us, if we so desire, to live a life according to his precepts, allows us to merit heaven.

I find it to be a beautiful thing that God knows me inside out and knows what I would be without him, but loves me anyway. 🙂

The story of the Centurion is deeper than the fact he cared for his servant. Christ praised his faith for a different reason. The Centurion stated that he was a man in charge, with great authority, and what he said happened. He approached Christ and recognized even more authority. The Centurion, by saying he was unworthy that Christ should enter, was saying in essence, “I know you are so powerful you don’t need to touch my servant or even see him. If you merely say the word, my servant will be healed”. See, while the Jews were asking for signs and miracles, this gentile showed what belief really was. That’s why Jesus said in all Israel I have not found such great faith.

BTW, Matthew 10:38 says "And anyone who does not pick up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. ", so Jesus does say that some are not worthy of Him.

I pray that you find comfort in the wording before the Eucharist. May God touch your heart in a special way!

He’s GOD!.. we will NEVER be worthy except through His grace. EVER. There is NOTHING you can do to make yourself as holy as God. All you can do is throw yourself at His feet and beg Him to make you as holy as possible so you can be in His presence.

I,

who is worthy,
No one, and that’s the whole point
Tell me what does one have to do to be worthy?
We can do nothing to become worthy.

Thus it would be hypocritical of us to deny that we are, in fact, unworthy.

Christ can accept our unworthiness, and through our humble plea, choose to dwell within us anyway.
why do they (the church) have us to say that. And then why do we go ahead and receive him if were unworthy??
Because we ARE unworthy. How does it become us to deny it, or try to hide it, especially from God.

👍👍👍

Exactly!

Compare the case of Mary, Martha and Lazarus. Mary and Martha’s Faith was such that they believed Christ could have saved Lazarus, but ONLY if Christ had actually been there.

Contrast that with the Centurion. He is a man who commanded what would now be a Company, led by an officer, a Captain.

He knew that, with his personal authority, he could command a ditch to be dug there, or a patrol sent out there. and it would be done. His personal presence was not required.

The Centurion’s faith was such that he, more than Mary or Martha, recognized what it means to be God. The Universe itself awaits your command. Christ only needs to make His desire known the Universe, and it would obey.

" Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the world and I shall be healed."

This does not bother me. Without God, we are nothing. This is a sign of our humility and submissiveness to God.

We are saying that we are not perfect, and that we are sinners. We need God to help us.

I developed a problem with it after a while. My thinking went something like this:

“My parents (mother especially) and many so-called friends have been telling me I was trash since the day I’m born and now the Church, which I hoped would heal me, is saying virtually the same thing?”

I had suffered from abuse and being told I was unloveable, worthless, Jesus didn’t love me, etc. However, I do not see the Church as saying the same thing at all. When I first came in, I didn’t read as much material emphasizing our unworthiness because I saw it as too harsh. But as my faith grows, I see it as a gift to be able to see my limited nature compared to God and to have that abundance of grace in receiving Him, even though there is nothing I can do to deserve him. I no longer see it as an insult to me but as an attempt to acknowledge the greatness of God and his profound love for us. It wouldn’t be as profound if we deserved it.

God’s abundance of grace is one of the most beautiful gifts he gives us. Speaking of abundance of grace, this is also why I love Mary. The closer we get to God, the more light shines on our sins and we perceive even the slightest separation from God by sin as horrific. I believe Mary wraps us in her mantle and soothes us in a way as we take part in this process, making it easier to go straight to Christ. God is truly merciful.

As a sinner and weak human I need Jesus more than ever, and because of that I also take comfort in how Jesus went to Zacchaeus house to eat.
So what did Zacchaeus do to be worthy to be in the physical presence of the God of the Universe?

What made the manager worthy to hold God Incarnate, was it the quality of the materials used? Was it the superb craftsmanship?

What made the iron nails worthy to touch the King of Kings, to come is so close contact with the Blood of Salvation? Was it the purity of the iron, the skill of the smith?

None of those!. Zaccheaus was NOT worthy to be in the presence of God, no stable or manger was worthy to see the Birth of God, no wood or iron was worthy to have Christ’s blood shed upon it

Rather, it is the clearest sign of the deepness of the Love of God. That DESPITE our deep unworthiness, God still loves us. Despite the incredible gall of our numerous offenses against Him, God still loves us.

So recognize your unworthiness, like the Centurion did, and in that, recognize that God’s love is SO INCREDIBLY DEEP, that He loves you through that!!

Not to nitpick, but it’s:

“Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.”

In the EF Mass it’s recited three times just to make certain it sinks into us that we’re not worthy. They should bring that back too.
Sorry, thanks for correcting that.

God did not make rubbish !!!

and it has nothing to do with pride. Do you telll your wife and or husband or Father and Mother that you are unworthy?

has your Father , Mother, Husband or Wife and said your unworthy ?

I’ll say this,

when you think your unworthy of someones love, you will not want to be around that person that person and won’t have a relationship with that person without barriers.

Just like Adam who ran and hid from God in the Garden because he was naked.

Love is a two way street.
I do not care who made the rubbish !!!
Any comparison of your and my Father and Mother is worthless.
God is THE FATHER and not a father like a human father. there are some human fathers who are not fathers at all who beat the sons and abuse them…
I am not talking about human things. If you approach a King and a Presidente, they have guards who will kick you out and if you resist , they will put you in prison.
You and I, though me are worthless and rubbish, may approach God, for He is a loving Father who forgives us all our sins, not because we deserve, but because He gave His Only son, Jesus Christ, ON WHOSE MERITS we have access to God The Father.

This is exactly the kind of question where we just obey Holy but we just obey Holy Mother Church. We can discuss it to death. Trivial really. The Latin is better, by the way.

"…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." - Romans 3:23

I don’t see any problem with either the old translation or the new, for both of pray with the words, "Lord, I am not worthy …
  1. to receive you, but only say the word, etc.
  2. that you should enter under my roof, etc.
The only problem I have is that it is not the version in scripture, for the centurion said, “only say the word and my SERVANT will be healed.”

How does that translate accurately to “my soul shall be healed?” I understood the new translation was meant to adopt the words of scripture, whereas, they do not.

Nevertheless, I have no problem with either version, for when the Church speaks, I follow.
