The funny thing is even when I was a Christian I never really read any Christian undertones into that movie (albeit there was a little religious interplay i.e. the old lady who took Josie in). Sure, he came to experience love (or something like it anyway); but is that exclusively Christian or is it simply human? I say the latter (everyone wants to love and be loved, Christian, Muslim, atheist, whatever).
As for the part where he saved his newly found friends from an Indian invasion; I think the undertone there was pretty typical. Two warriors (or as you might frame it when romanticizing war, two men of honor) experiencing a meeting of the minds facilitated by their mutual circumstances.
At any rate … great flick. My favorite quote was:
The kid (just before he died): Josie, Josie … they had it comin didn’t they Josie (referring to the numerous Union troops Josie had just killed)?
Josie: we all got it comin boy.
man … who does Americana better than Clint? Nobody (and for you older folks, NO John Wayne didn’t even come close, in fact he’s more like a corny version of Clint’s grandfather).
