Since I am 55, I guess am entitled to some (name removed by moderator)ut here. A sense of style is part of forming your identity which is part of the “job” of being an adolescent. When maturity kicks in, you know what looks good on you, what type of clothing and so forth projects the image you have of yourself, and presents your identity to the world. To do that, you have to know who you are, to have a strong sense of self, to accept yourself and to like yourself.
It also means you make your own decisions and leave off being told what to wear by a bunch of women-hating fashion designers and so-called marketing experts and buyers for the department and fashions stores.
At different stages of my life I dressed as I wished to project myself, as I wished to be perceived. I also dressed appropriately for the work I was doing. For housework I dress like it is serious work-sturdy shoes, usually a white shirt and pants, hair tied back, work gloves etc. like I am going to work, not like I am slobbing around the house. For work in an office or academic setting I dress like the senior level women in that setting - business suit or dress, modest shoes and stockings, neat hair, impeccable grooming, minimal accesories. For factory work the uniform-chemical resistant work clothes, steel toed boots, hard hat. For working with kids, washable slacks, blouse and athletic shoes. I like polo shirts because they have become uniform-like, go with slacks or skirts, and are no-iron.
