We’ve already diverted a question about choices in video games into a discussion that’s mostly concerned with what counts as pornography and the effects of simulated violence. I really don’t think the morality of making out is at all relevant to the question posed in the OP.
Soft core porn is not porn then? That section of the Catechism does not involve soft core porn and only “hard core” or simulated “hard core”. But the same rationale could apply though. That woman who is modelling naked with the intent to titillate is doing that in front of a camera for money, instead of doing so with her husband or not doing it at all.
I would say that the paragraph from the catechism only clearly refers to “hard core” pornography. I can’t definitively say whether the church considers viewing “soft core” pornography to be the same sin.
Either way, I think viewing it would be wrong. Either because of the intent of the viewer (lust), or because they would be supporting something which is obviously intended to tempt
other people to lust.
Why necessarily unambiguously?
Because if hypothetical-you is looking at something that
might be porn, we have to debate whether it’s actually porn first. I’m just gonna assume this material that all of us would clearly consider porn.
Only if you define only sex as pornographic. But mainstream use of pornography includes soft core too. So there would be a difference between sex and mere “erotica”? ( I hate these terms.)
The short answer is that the Catechism doesn’t always use terms the way they’re used in general speech. An example off the top of my head is “sexuality”, which the Catechism seems to use to refer to maleness or femaleness. In general speech, though, the term usually refers to whether one ID’s as straight, gay, etc, or other things that have to do specifically with the sex act.
I think it’s possible that the Catechism uses the term “pornography” in a somewhat stricter sense than society in general, perhaps in part because society considers it a neutral term. I don’t know for sure, though. I’m just guessing.
