I suppose that people only post about things when they are problematic. However, I wonder if anyone has actually used NFP successfully for child spacing. You wouldn’t think it’s possible from reading this board!

There are several here that do. I know of at least one that does NFP successfully due to a heart issue. If she were to get pregnant, she may very easily die.

I know there are a ton more. (including me) 🙂 74 cycle charter here. 👍

The reason I even started using NFP was because of this board;)… I wasn’t even Catholic at the time but the “success” stories here lead me to do research and eventually take the leap from ABC to NFP.

**I would have to say that for most people using NFP to space children, it works. Even the ones who report an “oopsie” usually admit that they knew they were taking a chance.

For the ones where it doesn’t work there are a few reasons…either they are doing something wrong (intentionally or not) or God wants them to have those babies anyway.

Dh and I have used it successfully since January 2002. 100% effective when avoiding and 100% successful when trying to achieve.

And, we have sex way more than once a month! 😃

Also, I love how practicing it changed my DH’s and my view on children.

Been using sympto-thermal for 19 years to conceive and to avoid.

100% successful.

According to the medical studies it seems to depend on whether the couples practice it strictly or loosely.

this study:
linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S0010782499001067
Shows that there really is an easy-to-identify 8-19 day window each month when women can become pregnant, and that avoiding intercourse during that time would be “safe.”

this study:
cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=5562373
shows that using an IUD barrier and using NFP (practiced strictly) produce roughly the same number of ooops babies.

this study
popline.org/docs/1307/145815.html
shows there is a 100% correlation between urinary LH level and ovulation and thus a do-it yourself LH test kit would be darn close to 100% effective at preventing unwanted pregnancy.

You can buy them
here:
bio-medicine.org/medicine-products/One-Step–LH-Urine-Ovulation-Test-10003-1/
or here:
medcompare.com/details/34332/One-Step–LH-Urine-Ovulation-Test.html

but I’d recommend checking with your doctor first

this study:
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/724176
shows that the “Peak mucus symptom” is an EXCELLENT predictor of when women can become pregant and thus couples who strictly practice NFP have a good chance of avoiding unwanted pregnancy.

this study however:
linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S0010782499000347
shows that women couples who SAY they are going to practice NFP frequently do not do so strictly and thus over a prolonged period women who used “the pill” had a 1-in-20 rate of unintended pregnancy whereas those SORT OF using NFP had long term rates of 1-in-3.

I prefer “bonus baby” to “oopsie”/“oops”
Babies are never an “oops”

On the same note- a good friend of mine and his wife just found out that they have a bonus baby on the way! Please pray for them, as their parents are not too thrilled with the idea of second grandchild.

That would me, I’ve used it to avoid pregnancy for 12 years now.

We’ved used it 100% successfully in our marriage (almost 8 years)… 😃

DW and I have used it for 6 1/2 years and know that it works for both ways. Although it can be frustrating at times, it does work and we have been blessed that this is a part of our marriage.

I was wondering if posters who answer this thread could state the method they are using 🙂 I’ve been charting Creighton for about a year and a half now (originally because of a possible health problem) but now I’m also learning it since I’m getting married in December 2009. My cycles are really hard to interpret, so I’m hoping to find a method that might work better for me after I’m married. Thanks!

I have been using the sympto-thermal method. I like it because there are 3 reference points that you can check. Temperature, cervical mucous and cervical position. The temperature is good for checking when ovulation has already taken place, the mucous is good for checking if it has fertile quality, and if the mucous is questionable, the position of the cervix will confirm fertile quality for you.

I also use the Sympto-Thermal method… and this is a perfect description! 👍

Sympto-Thermal for us! But I must say I place a lot more emphasis on my cervical and mucous checks than I do my temperatures. But I DO temp.

I agree. Its like the term “pregnancy scare”. It just sounds so negative to me… Anyways, that is so sad! I can’t believe someone would not be thrilled with a second grandchild, even if they did not have Catholic views on life!

Back to the original question, we haven’t had to use NFP like that yet, but my aunt had to be brought “back to life” during her last (5th) delivery and was told she could not make it through another birth. She has been using NFP ever since (I think she might be entering menopause by now, but I don’t know for sure, haven’t asked :o ) and her youngest is in her teens. When I got married she told me about this (how they use NFP) and told me she and her husband practice it in a very conservative way since her life could be at stake.

Thanks for all these great responses, especially the studies. That’s quite helpful.

It’s great to hear some positive stories, since most of the posts here are negative.
