Natural disasters are of course under God’s control, and what HIs plan is with them is a mystery to us as mere human beings, but we can know, because we know that God is just, that it is not a form of judgement against particular races or nations of people, just because of their skin color or their ancestry.

My personal opinion is that Pat Robertson should be thought a fool and keep his mouth shut, rather than open it and remove all doubt.
Oh no. You will no doubt get correction now from this amateur pianist who will remind you of the bible verse that says if you call someone a fool,

I’m telling you, it’s coming. He already did it in this thread.

The Haiti people have just had the wrost Eartquahe in years and Pat is saying that it is the work of God How can this man get on TV and say this to the people of the world,I think it time to check Pat IQ this is very say for a preach to get on TV and say it was for God and this guy was running for the # office in American
no. pat robertson does not believe he is God. but he does at times presume to speak for God. to the point where he says " God showed me this" or God showed me that." and then the prediction does not come to pass. he has proven himself to be a false prophet. peace be to you bill.

Obviously you think a great deal of him. Why? Most of what comes out of his mouth is hateful. Seems very very UN-Christian.

I have the right to have an opinion on him. I’ve seen him a few times and he left a bad taste in my mouth. What good does he serve?
hi christine, i wouldnt neccessarily say what comes out of his mouth is hateful. just misguided and false. hes gotten worse over the years. maybe its time for him to retire, and enjoy life on a tropical island or something.😃

Fool:

Jesus in the sermon of the mount specifically warns about calling my neighbor you fool. So that might not be a good idea. Foolish though might be fair.

Crook:

That would be for a jury of his peers to decide. Since no charges have been brought up concerning him, that also would be over the top.

Dirt bag

The last I checked a dirt bag was a part of a vacuum cleaner

Swindler

See crook

Swine

I thin Pat Robertson is of genus species homo sapiens, not whatever a pig is

Bigot

Arguable. I think you can make a case that all (well maybe most) of us are “bigots” to some extent or another. It is just whether what we are bigoted against is fashionable or unfashionable. So possible but not very meaningful.
Does god talk to you too? If so what does he say, how does his voice sound, and has he ever given you a good stock tip

His comment really is so very insulting. According to Wikipedia (Haiti):

“Haiti is a largely Christian country, with Roman Catholicism professed by 80% of Haitians. Protestants make up about 16% of the population. Haitian Vodou, a New World Afro-diasporic faith unique to the country, is practiced by an undetermined percentage of the population. Religious practice often spans Haiti and its diaspora as those who have migrated interact through religion with family in Haiti.”

If one is to accept Pat’s comments, God is punishing a country that is roughly 96% Christian (or cursing it…and continues to curse it). Let’s say that the Haitians made a pact with the devil (let’s give him that). That was hundreds of years ago. Haiti is now Christian; what good would it be to punish them now?

OR, is it because they are God’s people that they are being shaken like this?

No, he’s holding the people of Haiti responsible…For something their pagan ancestors said hundreds of years ago…Do you think God should hold you responsible for the things your pagan ancestors said and did hundreds of years ago?
I was in the Navy 1982-1989 in Norfolk ,VA. Pat Robertson’s
CBN network is in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake area. Many military and civilian residents in the area have tolerated more than enough with Pat’s station and college campus. Many of our Christian brothers and sisters in the region are even dissapointed.

If I would ever believe Mr. Robertson’s views on Haitian satanic pagan worship resulted in this horrific tragedy, then the United States with slavery and abortions that Haiti could never match should have been destroyed years ago. Yes I truly believe it is possible for people in the United States to educate themselves into ignorance and imbesility.

A horrific tragedy in Haiti. Messages of “Stew in your own juices for high population” from an abortionist and the Bois Caiman Devil Pact in 1791 from Pat Robertson shows arrogance, ignorance, disrespect, and no compassion for dignity of human life to the Haitian people.

I’m A Catholic and a sinner. I protest against abortion in prayer at the clinics. I don’t recall seeing Mr. Robertson and his followers in prayer against abortion at the clinics. This week I will make efforts supporting humanitarian aid for Haiti with our brothers and sisters, no matter where they are from or what they beleive. I would advise Mr. Robertson to roll up his sleeves and do the same.

I think that Pat Robertson needs to hang up his microphone and call it a day. He’s definitely lost it. Thank God he never became President.

This whole discussion begs questions and that is: Is God in control of everything or just somethings? Are natural disasters under the control of nature or the hand of God. Did God will this earthquake or was he asleep at the wheel? Did this happen because of Pat Robertson or in spite of him? Does God judge a nation when the leadership disregards Him?
Good questions!

I’m sure you don’t.

Bottom line here: Dumb haitians “get” what they “deserve” for simply being ignorant of his God hundreds of years ago while under slavery and intense pressure to find relief and did what they thought would help with the limited understanding they had to do so out of desperation. And his God is allowing that action to be the sole reason they are poor (he mentions poverty more than once) must be a prosperity guy too?
And that this natural disaster was really a supernatural event, and part of this ongoing curse that I assume will never end? How does he explain that? How does he explain why christians were killed in this? Oh, maybe they weren’t the right brand of christians…

Why anyone would defend such a bigoted man even though you feel things he said in the past and NEVER retracted dont tell us much about this man, is they all point to hating anyone who does not agree with him, and that is sad. And there are too many people supporting his stupid campain. I should get a list of his dumb comments together for you to look at before you decide to run to his defense. He is responsible for his long history of hate.
Bridgeforsale said it much better than I did.
The world would be a better place if people weren’t so easily mislead by the likes of him.
I sense a lot of anger and sarcasm and lack of objectivity in your posting. I wonder just who is bigoted here.

For the record I have never given the man a dime. I don’t give money to evangelists on TV. I rarely watch Christian television, but if I do it is probably either Billy Graham or EWTN.

Again, I did not vote for Obama. I would not suggest that anybody else do so. I do not support killing babies and I disagree with many of Obamas policys. But I will defend Obama from attacks that read in many of the over-the-top chain emails I receive. Same thing with Pat Robertson.

For the record

It is fair to ask whether the whole basis of Pat Robertsons statement is true or whether it is an urban legend.

I will point out that this is the statement of one Haitian (not Haitians) and that he brings as much documentation to support his claim as Pat Robertson is bringing to support his.

But he is not over the top in his statement here.

For the record there is a lack of any scholarly discussion and scholarly sources on the Haitian revolution on the internet. Here is one source where Pat Robertsons claims are not mentioned. But here is another source where I read
Haiti’s mulattoes could not believe their ears. It was the last straw. They immediately joined their education, knowledge, and considerable military experience to those 500,000 enslaved Africans–and Haiti exploded in revolt. In August 1791, Vodou priest Boukman Duffy convened slave rebel leaders in the forest overlooking Le Cap. Illuminated by flashes of lightening, they made incantations…they slit the throat of a pig and drank its blood…and they formally swore death to all blancs, which they carried out to the letter with pruning hooks, machetes, and fire. In November, Louis-Jacques Bauvais’ mulatto troops attacked and burned Port-au-Prince, slaughtering whites wherever they found them. They sported white ears as cockades in their caps and committed atrocities against women and children I just don’t have the heart to tell.

Oh this is great. You now are turning your anger and sarcasm towards me.:):):)🙂

I just wonder who the bigot here is.:):)🙂

Ironic as I have said many times I don’t particularly care for the man myself. I could share my reasons. But I will defend folks I don’t particularly care for from “over-the-top” attacks,

I don’t know the man personally and deliberately have avoided reading his blog because just the announcment of the topic makes me so mad, but in general anyone who claims to declare God’s judgement on an entire nation this way is in danger of claiming the divine perogative and is on dangerous ground spiritually. That there is actually a “Catholic” news website claiming something similar, that alleged rampant devil worship in Haiti has brought upon this “curse” is even more appalling. Another formerly reliable website off my list.
:sad_yes:
Apparently, he believes in the power of voodoo. That’s the “pact” he is referring to right?
I think that’s right.🤷
Pat Robertson has a long history of claiming to have messages from God. (He also has, on occasion, claimed to be able to change God’s mind, which may be the really scary part).
I have been aware for some time that there are rumblings in evangelical circles about his [apparent] mental decline. 🤷
What is patently true is that: PR talks too much; and he thinks [and says] that an awful lot of people that you & I recognize as Christian, are actually nothing of the sort. He has a right to his opinion on the latter. The trouble is, that he consistent refuses to keep said opinion to himself. This is a problem of long standing.

Now I will give my own opinion: If (which God forbid!) his hometown of Virginia Beach were visited by destruction, he would not take one scintilla of the blame on himself.
Annie has the right of it: He is on dangerous ground spiritually.:twocents:

And that is fair and (I think anyway) truthful. That is one reason why I also do not particularly care for Pat myself.

But I do observe that in this one comment of Pat’s, I hear nothing of “God showed me this or that”.

Does god talk to you too? If so what does he say, how does his voice sound, and has he ever given you a good stock tip
So now you choose to be sarcastic to me? :):)🙂

It does support my comment about bigotry being so widespread that a charge of bigotry against Pat is quite meaningless.

Lest anybody think that I actually agree with Pat’s statement, I do not. So let me try to express in a not-over-the-top manner my objections to Pat’s statement.

(1) The “made a pact with the devil” stuff really sounds like it could be an urban legend. Have you Pat Robertson double and triple checked your sources to verify this is not the case.

(2) I know that Pat Robertson is not claiming that God is directly causing Haiti’s problems, he is implying a cause-and-effect relationship. While a cause and effect relationship is Scripturally possible, do you Pat Robertson know that a cause and effect relationship exists in this case? If not, why are you implying it?

(3) Why shouldn’t I believe Occams razor and believe that any cause and effect relationship has its cause in the earth sciences. And as God is prone to do, he normally doesn’t choose to interfere with natural scientific law.

(4) What are you implying about God to suggest that a cause-and-effect relationship persists over 200 years after the cause to a people that are generations removed from the cause and are therefore innocent.

(5) Even if you do believe that a cause-and-effect relationship exists in this case, do you know how utterly insensitive to imply that this is the case to a people that are hurting and are not a part of the original cause. It is just not ok to suggest to innocent hurting people that they somehow brought this on themselves.

(6) Pat, this is not the first time you have said some really boneheaded things on the national stage. Don’t you learn from your mistakes?

As a former Protestant, I’m not an admirer of Pat Robertson or fundamentalists in general. However I think Cathloics can also guilty of an equal and opposite error if we think God doesn’t judge, not only at the final judgement, but also in historical circumstances and even in natural disasters. I think in one respect 9/11 was a judgment, in the sense that it has drawn the US into two very expensive wars overseas, and has brought the “post-Christian” West into deeper conflict and confrontation with Islam, the other Abrahamic challenger.

I know this much - God isn’t soft. I don’t like HIm much sometimes.

The truth is that we don’t know just how much God may or may not have been involved in this natural disaster. I had an old pastor whose accuracy in predictions was uncanny. He was a good and holy man. I remember him saying to me once, in his office, “I think God’s doing something to the sun.” I think He is too. After all Revelation talks about the sun burning men’s skin and their cursing Him for it. Either God’s going to be responsible for that or nobody is.

And after all why is it that Haiti and the Dominican Republic right next door should be so different in achievement? Some of the reasons are given in the attached link, but I would think that an official line which promoted a pact with the devil would not be a great way to found and maintain a nation.
