I am so frustrated with spell check on my
Kindle and cellphone.
It is so annoying to write a post and hit reply and then to see spell check changed a word.

Even more annoying is texting on my cellphone. I wanted to type ICU this morning and spell check changed it to
ICE. It changed my grandson’s name from Hunter to Hunger! Grrrrr! You have to work so hard then to trick spell check to put the letters in you
want.

Can spell check be dismantled or turned off on Kindle or cellphones does anyone know?

I consider spell check a blessing. Auto-correct can be tricky!

There should be a way to add words to your “dictionary” like on word processing programs. I’ve had to do that with certain acronyms or names to prevent autocorrection.

I just briefly read messages before I send. Usually I’ll catch any weirdness that way.

I like a spell check or something of that kind that highlights doubtful words to call my attention to them. I definitely don’t want anything that changes what I’ve written without asking my permission. Whatever it is I have at the moment, it’s what I want. It does what I want it to, and no more.

I don’t want a program which thinks it knows what I wanted to say and so changes what I typed.

I don’t either. How can I disable those programs, do you know? (For example,
right now it changed the “d” in do to “s” and changed the word to so! Grrrr!)

I tend to like Grammarly’s corrections. They don’t auto-change. I’m dyslexic so withot some sort of spell check my writing is unreadable.

I despise the non Australian corrections. Stealing u, adding c ,

It sounds like you don’t have a problem with spell check but with autocorrect. I advise everyone to turn off autocorrect. Never met a person, not one person, who loves it and finds it useful.

Can’t answer for Kindle (I have an ancient, basic, “dumb” Kindle - no touchscreen, no spell check, no autocorrect).

For mobile devices, I can only answer for Android. I have yet to use an Android device that doesn’t allow turning off autocorrect, but how this is done depends upon who manufactured the device, what version of Android the device is running, and which on-screen keyboard is in use.
Now try to use a keyboard that autocorrects in two languages at the same time…
Oh gosh, yes. My keyboards predict (name removed by moderator)ut in two flavors of English and two other languages. If autocorrect were functioning, I would have thrown everything off the balcony long ago!

Is there no setting for Australian English? My keyboard app offers English in US, UK, Canadian and Australian versions.

No, it’s totally disrespectful! 🙀🐨. Not even a kangaroo avatar to post…

But there’s a koala… ❤️

If you’re using Android, try the SwiftKey app.

I’m actually grateful for spell check. I like spelling words correctly.

I do find it useful sometimes, though the jury is still out on whether it makes up for the times I do not find it useful. 😜 Sometimes in typing on my phone, my fingers will in advertently hit the key next to the one I was aiming for. Then auto-correct will jump in and give me the correctly spelled word anyway (some of the time, anyway).

Of course, then it keeps wanting to change my brother’s name, too, which is irritating. I must have misspelled it one time ages ago and ever since it always wants to revert back to the misspelling (which is also a different name, just one letter off). Ah well. It did finally stop auto-correcting my daughter’s name. After so many times typing it, I think it must have finally learned not to change it.

Appreciate that advice. I am switching languages all the time with android, and on top of my own mistakes, there is autocorrect.
So thank you.

I was a teacher of English as a Second Language so I am a very good speller and I don’t like it when it thinks it knows better than I do the word to be used.

I was texting the woman who has the Adoration hour before me who is a Spanish speaker. I kept trying to text “tengo” meaning “I have” and it kept changing the “e” to “a” and showing a picture of a tango dancer!!!
