Does spell check drive you crazy?

As a writer I had a problem with it sometimes. The newer Windows 10 program has the option to add a word spellchecked to the dictionary. Problem solved.

When I’m texting, I like the auto-complete feature. It remembers all the words and the names I most often use. Since I’m not the best at spelling, spell check helps me more often than not. Every so often we fight over a word I want spelled a certain way, but then I always win. I type slowly compared to most people, so I usually catch mistakes before I send the message.

I just tried typing the word that describes a street in a neighborhood. It is 3 words divided by 2 hyphens. I wasn’t able to type it. It kept changing it to cypress.
I was defeated by spell check. Evidently no one else has this problem.

That is what I want to know is how to turn it off!! Can you tell me how to do it
@UpUpAndAway?

From my earlier response:
Can’t answer for Kindle (I have an ancient, basic, “dumb” Kindle - no touchscreen, no spell check, no autocorrect).

For mobile devices, I can only answer for Android. I have yet to use an Android device that doesn’t allow turning off autocorrect, but how this is done depends upon who manufactured the device, what version of Android the device is running, and which on-screen keyboard is in use.
So @7_Sorrows, on the Kindle, I can’t. For smartphones and non-Kindle tablet devices, I need more info.

okay. i think i found out how to stop it on my Kindle. i tried typing cul-de-sac and it didn’t auto correct it to cypress.
i will try my phone next.
Thanks for your help!

You’re welcome, but I haven’t actually done anything 😊

well, i figured out how to turn off auto
correct off and you posted you had done it, so i tried and succeeded!

No, unfortunately. I tried to find the place that gave you the choice. I have an Android LG. It is about a year old.

For me, it can get quite annoying with autocorrect. Now and then it fixes a word, but sometimes it gets pretty wacky like turning a letter acronym into numbers or vice versa. And while I could backspace once to get my spelling, if it splits the word, that doesn’t work.

As for autocorrect, Google Drive can get pretty interesting. I was writing up some things in a folder for a little fantasy world I made an I really wonder how it chooses which things to underline since sometimes special words will get underlined, such as Beladar (which it thought was Beldar, a minor SNL character) but not Finniweek.

Try this.

Settings ➡️ System ➡️ Languages & (name removed by moderator)ut ➡️ Advanced ➡️ Spell checker ➡️ toggle Off

That’s how it works in Android 8 (Oreo) on a European-market Sony Xperia X. Perhaps it’s something similar on your LG.

I did find languages and (name removed by moderator)ut, but no spell check. I went to the text display and read through that. there was a toggle on and off, but it was with syncing and i couldn’t
do the toggle by itself,
thanks for your help though.
my daughterinlaw is good with phones.
when she gets home I will have her take a look. I think she is Iphone though.
I will let you know.

I find I have to find a way to outsmart auto correct or spellcheck. just erasing the word and retyping it doesn’t’t work because it keeps putting the word how it wants to.
sometimes you have to go into the word and delete the letter you want to change which works unless it is the last letter.
notice how my contractions all have an extra apostrophe and t? it does that on its own. When I try to type the name Comedy
(C O M E Y) it changes it to comedy or comet!!!

My best advice is to install a different keyboard app.
I’m super happy with Swype, but it’s a paid app.
There are tons of decent keyboards for free. Just install one, try it. If you like it, stick with it. If not, uninstall and try another.
ok. i will try that on my phone. thanks.
i think i have my Kindle taken care of.

There’s no spell check in the Advanced menu in Languages & (name removed by moderator)ut?
