Does the devil only want us in hell or does he settle for purgatory?

On a related note, how is it fair for someone to go to hell if it’s the devil’s fault? In other words, consider it like a math equation:

Person + Life = Heaven
Person + Life + Devil = Hell

So why should the devil be the determining factor whether someone goes to hell, if that same person would otherwise choose Heaven?

But imagine if such a person would choose Heaven if the devil was not there to tempt him.

Then it would seem that that same person never really deserved Heaven, for he was the kind of person who would choose to sin under the devil’s suggestion.

In other words, it seems like Heaven or Hell is a matter of accidental circumstance. For example, whether or not the Devil happens to tempt you in this life.

Nope. Never. We have the absolute freedom to choose. If we failed to investigate God’s goodness, despite all of the warning and the evidence which surrounds us, where was the love in our hearts?

Hell is justice. We all merit hell, but through deciding to love God and cooperating with His grace, we have a “sure hope” as Saint Paul wrote, of attaining to heaven.

Two options: Either the devil can cause someone bound for Heaven to go to Hell, or he can’t. If he can, then the reason someone goes to hell is not merely out of pure free will but out of the suggestion of the Devil — or else why would that person otherwise prefer Heaven?

We only merit hell through Mortal Sin. The unbaptized baby does not merit hell.

We cannot go to either heaven or hell against our will! Do you have a catechism?

Whole lotta’ good reading in there. Not nearly as much argument as here, but good stuff nevertheless.
