The JW’s site scripture where Jesus was tempted in the desert as proof that Satan rules the world in that he offered it to Jesus as a temptation and Jesus was tempted.
Of course He was tempted - men are. He was a man.
The Evangelists are saying a lot in these passages:- Jesus is Israel in person
- He stood the test, unlike Israel in the desert
- He was obedient - unlike…
- He was not spared temptation
- satan had no hold over Him
- He is our Model
- He is fully human
- They are preparing for the Passion Narratives
- The OT is fulfilled in Him
- He is better than Moses
- He is the Messiah
- & more

- & more
Would like some scripture to show otherwise - Satan does NOT RULE the world, is merely allowed to exist in the world. And also does anyone know of a “topic” driven guide to the Bible. Thanks s
Jesus has crushed its head & cast it out - it is the “strong man”, but Jesus is the “stronger man” who “has despoiled it”, & “let it in triumph”.
The theme of Kingly Rule - that of the Father, preached by & shown forth in Jesus - is basic to the NT. The demonology of the NT is one expression of this - because the casting out of demons is a sign of the Presence of the Kingdom, & a work of the Messiah.Jesus is often called “the Son of Man”. The Gospel use of this title is almost certainly coloured by its use in the Book of Enoch, which was familiar to the first Christians. In the BoE, there is a kingdom of satan, opposed to that of “the Lord of Spirits” (a title for God). If the BoE influenced Jesus or the formation of the gospels, it’s quite possible that His “work on earth” was seen as a fulfilment of the ideas in the BoE - including His encounters with demonic powers (they might not be demons to our way of thinking - but that does not matter).
The NT is full of expressions which underline the decisiveness & finality & irreversibility of His victory:
- “He has abolished death…”,
- cast out “the prince of this world”,
- established “the Kingdom/Kingship/Kingly ruling of God/Heaven” (= the Kingship of His Father)
It may not seem like it - this is because the Kingship is present in mystery: it is not political, like human lordships, which are here today, & forgotten tomorrow; they don’t last, haven’t lasted, can’t last, because they are built on human glory, strength, power, might & splendour - IOW, they are built on sin. It has been established on earth, so it is here already - but it is not fully present; so there is a tension between our life as the People of God now, & the fullness of the presence of the Kingdom to come we hope for. He has established it: therefore, we pray for its coming. The Sacraments are signs of it.
For a kingdom built on sin & manifesting its power, ISTM one need look no further than the Third Reich. It’s deeply ironic that a reich devoted to exterminating the Jews should have an ideology so full of OT & Messianic imagery, such as:
- salvation, or spaciousness for living - cf. Lebensraum
- holy war - speaks for itself IMO
- exterminating of the enemies of God
- a 1000-year kingdom (Millennialists please note)
- a festal calendar
- an elect nation - the German Volk
- a Lord’s Anointed - its Fuehrer
- a Cross
- apostles & prophets - its ideologues
satan does not rule anything - but it has its satanic counter-Messiahs.
These other kingdoms are totalitarian, in a more familiar sense
