Does the Holy Day today fulfill Sunday obligation?

It’s not that I think it’s “non-essential.” I was under the odd assumption that Christmas is not obligatory when it falls on a Saturday or Monday. I’m happy to read that it is, however. I was thinking to myself: “Why would Christmas not be obligatory?” Alas, it is!
That’s exactly what I mean - i’m surprised that anyone would ever be under such an assumption. It’s almost like assuming that the Church doesn’t understand some of the most basic fundamentals of the faith.

Can I ask what led you to assume such a thing? I’m not trying to judge, I know some Christian denominations don’t celebrate Christmas, and others do but don’t hold church services on the day because they see.time with family as being more important.

By the way ‘alas’ means ‘unfortunately’. I trust you don’t see the Christmas obligation as being something unfortunate 🙂

I really don’t know what made me assume that. As I was writing my reply earlier, I thought something was amiss; that’s why I double-checked. I’m glad I was wrong. 🙂

Oh, and I think I meant “Thankfully.” It’s been a long week, haha.

Christmas Day falls under this category, too, right? I think if Christmas Day falls on a Saturday or Monday, the obligation to attend Mass is abrogated.

Oops, just checked. I see that Christmas Day is always obligatory. Good to know!
That’s Christmas, but you may be happy to know that Jan 1 won’t be an obligatory again (as a stand alone) until 2019, almost halfway into the next U.S. Presidency.
