Does the Lord condone polygamy?

I wasn’t referring to your source that was mentioned but to your other sources that you have used for your mormon research. You claimed that they were unbiased. I have never seen an unbiased book or research on mormonism. Usually, the authors have a biased understanding of mormonism since they all take a side as to whether JS was a prophet or a conman.

My guess is: the book that you quoted from takes JS to be a conman. Thus, if so, it is biased. 🙂
Of course you would feel that way. You have proven my point once again.

You simply believe that anything that doesn’t show mormonism in a glowing light must be anti mormon.

How predictable, not to mention sad.

Building one’s own militia to protect the lds members was a smart move considering the hassle the mormons experienced. And even when they were in utah, some california newspapers were calling for the extermination of the mormons which led to fear among the mormon populations which led to the unfortunate MMM incident.

And why should the federal govenment seize lds church assets and possessions? And if I remember correctly, there were other threats involved from the federal government.
Are you going to explain how a group that can practice civil disobedience can also build militia? It isn’t possible, as civil disobedience is non-violent. Think sit-ins, peaceful marches, Gandhi, Martin Luther King. Get the idea?

Polygamy was illegal, the mormon 12th article of faith says mormons should obey the law…remember this is the conversation. Not the poor persecuted mormons.

Maybe you should think for a while about the many convoluted ways you don’t actually think about things.

Well, lets see, how to explain it to you…ummmm…lets try this:

Polygamy could be considered civil disobedience as a way of defying the law that was then in place. Mormons still practiced polygamy regardless of the law. Thus, it was civil disobedience.

Now the militia. Mormons had two choices: build a militia to defend themselves or face anniliation. The first option was chosen and rightly so. The individuals you listed came into being in a different time and place. I am sure that a sitin would have been responed to with home burnings. And a march? Would have been met with bullets.

And yes, the mormons were persecuted and they represent a sore point in American history.

lol. You can’t have a militia and be non-violent at the same time. It just isn’t possible. It is like saying I’m an anti-violent person but I carry a pistol around with me at all times, just in case I need to shoot someone.

So if a faith wanted to perform same sex marriages, the LDS leadership would be fine with that?
It would make very little difference what the lds leadership thinks about it. Various religious faiths do support same sex marriage. What to do? What does the catholic leadership do about it?

I resemble that remark!! 😛

But hey, I’m in law enforcement, so that is ok right? 😃

I suppose that the mormons should have laid down and died. 🙂 Why would the mormons be non-violent when they had enemies trying to kill them? At that time, it was defend yourself or die…such was the american frontier.

Like with polygyny, the Catholic Church righly sticks to what the living Word said regarding them.

Do you believe same sex marriage should be legal, since"Various religious faiths do support same sex marriage"?

Who are you implying would have “annihilated” the Mormons? I agree they were persecuted, but I don’t think genocide was on the mind of their oppressors.

Why: I think there are three issues we can agree on:
  1. there were Old Covenant prophets who practiced polygyny.
  2. Christ reinstituted a return to “one man, one wife”
  3. Smith, at some point in his career, claimed that God gave him a thumbs up on polygyny (but he was against multiple wives prevsiously).
LDS believe the NT had “many precious truths” omitted, and view the LDS Standard Works as more authoritiative.

Catholics don’t believe Smith was a prophet, at all.

We are at an impasse, and the two will likely never be reconciled.

What Catholics thnk on this is red herring. YOU claimed that Mormons were not allowed to practice their faith by engaging in polygamy. So you were asked about same sex marrige…which the LDS Church fought VERY hard to prevent in California.

Or maybe you were not aware of that

It wasn’t? You could have fooled me. Read the history and get back to me. 🙂

I’m guessing whatever history I’ll read, you’ll call it “biased”.

You could probably save me the trouble by letting me know who you think was motivated to kill all living LDS.

Edit to add, I’m from Missouri, and know all about the Extermination Order. It was also to “drive out” the LDS from MO.

I agree, but I’m calling “dodgeball” on it. dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge!

I think this topic shows Tradition in action. The Magisterium speaks on issues of faith and morals thereby rendering a judgement on a particular action. The written Word may be a little ambigous on this topic but not the Magisterium. It is not condoned.
