Does your Christian Church/tradition teach about hell?

I am curious to know if your Christian Church/tradition teaches about Hell? I have come across many people who believe in Heaven,but they deny Hell? I know JW’s deny Hell. I as a Catholic even encounter Catholics who get all bent out-of-shape when I discuss Hell? Why? Simply because one wishes to deny it does not mean it does not exist. Jesus even speaks of it,so why deny its existence? That is just beyond me.🤷

Hell (Eternal Punishment). 1. The doctrine of eternal punishment, repugnant to natural man, has been repudiated by errorists (e.g., Origen,* Universalists*) but is clearly revealed in Scripture. To deny this doctrine is to reject the authority of Scripture.

  1. Acc. to the Bible, the unbelievers will be damned (Mk 16:16). They will be punished with everlasting destruction (2 Th 1:9), the damnation of hell (Mt 23:33). This punishment is variously described as unquenchable fire (Mk 9:43–48), outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Mt 8:12), a prison from which there is no escape (Mt 5:25–26).

  1. As regards the question whether the fire of hell (Mt 25:41 et al.) is a material fire or not, restraint is in order. Since other expressions are used to depict the suffering of the lost (e.g., “their worm does not die,” Mk 9:48; they “shall be cast out into outer darkness,” Mt 8:12), all of them may well be understood figuratively. The description that the Bible gives of hell is to express in terms taken from human experience the unspeakable torments of body and soul of the damned. Whatever has been said about the awful doom of the wicked is intended to call sinners to repentance and warn them of the wrath to come.

i know what you mean about our brother/sister catholics. they are on a childish kick and want to justify whatever it is they do by saying i dont go to church (or insert your random sin or heresy here) but as long as i pray and stay right with God, how can i not be let into heaven. i dont think for most of us [catholics] its not that we dont believe in hell its just that they dont want to think that the way they lives can send them there

Like they used to say on SNL, “Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt.”:rolleyes:

Hell is hideous, so people who deny it are reacting in the classical human way that if you close your eyes, the hideous thing goes away. Problem is, it doesn’t.

We do the same thing with death, which is the other great hideousness in human life; the difference being, that every time we have to mourn someone, or every Ash Wednesday our eyes are opened to the hideosity of death. Only the Holy Spirit can open them to the truth of hell; and HE won’t force open your mind against your will.

Fast answer, from behind the pulpit, NO. Can’t teach about hell, the money wouldn’t come in.

Outside of the sermon, people believe in hell. During the service, not so much.

Does it ever occur to them that those who MIGHT be offended to hear about Hell, will like going there even less???🤷

If there was no hell there would be no reason for God to have sent His only Son for our salvation.

The people I know who don’t believe there is a hell, are skipping parts of scripture that say there is a hell, and pretty much missing the whole point of salvation, and Christ’s death on the cross.

Some people want to talk about hell to try to scare us. I think some of that is necessary, but really the desire to be with God and to follow Christ is more powerful than just behaving out of fear.

I think that is the essential message of the New Testament.
Think of the Act of Contrition.

:confused: You mean priests will not mention or discuss Hell during Mass? I most certainly have heard more than once.

I don’t see how not teaching about hell would keep people giving money.
We don’t get “fire and brimstone” and damnation yelled at us, but we know it exists, and it is an absence of God.

I can only tell you what I think hell is. It’s real, it’s eternal, it’s a place to avoid more than anything else in this universe, it’s individual: a person’s hell is of his/her own making (the fires of hell are the unsatified lusts or improper passions, it’s lonely, it’s awful!!!)

It’s a place of self imposed torment.

True. But I think our personal Hell is like Disneyland compared to the real deal…😦

I agree. Do priests need to sugar coat their homilies in order to gain capital? That is deception to the faithful and it is our salvation we are discussing here.I love when priests simply tell it the way it is.👍

Do we only follow Christ because of “fire insureance”?

I follow Christ not because of a fear of hell…but because of the great love he has bestowed upon humanity by giving himself for us while we were yet in our sins.

I follow Christ because through him and his teaching I seek to make the world in which I live a better place…there by delivering some from an “earthly hell” that they now suffer in.

I follow Christ because through him we have life now…abundant life and fellowship with him and his Body to be leaven in THIS WORLD and light IN THIS WORLD.

The fear of hell, IMO, is a terrible reason to be a Christian.

And you did not understand mine either. Does not change the fact no hell here on earth is even comparable to the eternal Hell.

Who said anything about hell being here on earth??? This earth isn’t eternal!!!
 
I don’t think its really talked about in church but I’m aware of it through books about Christianity.
