Does your non-Catholic Christian church teach you about Catholicism?

I was raised Baptist (southern) and my grandparents were pentecostal holiness…one of the clearest memories I have is asking my grandfather “Can Catholics go to heaven?” I was raised to believe Catholics were the devil, whore of Babylon, Antichrist promoters, etc.

I luckily found the error of my ways and came home to the one true Church. Now I don’t understand how I ever believed those things. Unfortunately when i called my hometown baptist church for my proof of baptism I got lectured on converting and told that I was leaving the Christian faith in going to the Catholic Church.

No offense to anyone, I hope, but how can people be so ignorant to think that Catholics aren’t Christians. We may have different beliefs but our focus is Christ!

Sorry this is my first post on this thread–I hope I am not getting in too late. Please forgive any repetitive comments.

I found it by searching on Jimmy’s other postings.
He is known for starting some really good threads. He has all my respect, and I would describe him a guardian of the faith.

I grew up a Southern Baptist. My family was very active in the church and for a time I considered the ministry. My first experience with the Catholic Church was when I was 16 at a KofC fish fry at Our Lady of the Lake parish in Rockwall, Texas (what good southerner doesn’t like fried catfish).

My preacher would occasionally make a comment about the Catholic faith (ie saint worship, Mary, etc). The common thought was that Catholic were Catholics, not Christians. After a number of events, I started to investigate the matter for myself. I mean if Catholicism is so wrong, why are there so many of them.

What I found is pretty amazing. I continue to study. If anybody is interested in learning more, Paul Witcomb (sp?) has a great pamphlet called “Confessions of a Roman Catholic” that will prove a short and interesting read. After this get the Scott Hahn cd from the Mary Foundation, “The Conversion of Scott Hahn.” Both of these gentlemen were Protestants who worked diligently at proving the Catholic Church wrong. After extensive study, both converted to Roman Catholicism.

Now when I here someone saying a Catholic is not a Christian, I respond by saying that is like saying a Cadillac Coup d’Ville is not a car.

I have only heard Catholics mentioned once in my church and it was during confirmation classes. I don’t even remember what they said - just matter of fact a few of the differences (3 or 4 I think) and it was in no way slamming to Catholics. We just nicely discussed some differences.

Now I know there are some Baptists here saying they never learned about Catholics either, but I wanted to share my experience. This may just be specific to a baptist church I went to with my friend (a daughter of a baptist minister) and they have a guest speaker who just ripped into Catholics - you know the whole, why would millions of people follow and listen to men who give advice about marriage when they have no families and have no clue when it comes to raising family and family issues. it was embarassing. I mean, give me a break I couldn’t wait to get out of there.

If that’s “all” the ripping that pastor did - picking on priestly celibacy - he was being quite nice compared to some of the other stuff I heard as a Baptist. :eek:

I love Quakers, too bad there are none of them in my country.
They seem like nice fellows.
 
I was raised Mormon and heard plenty of negative things said about Catholics. When I left the LDS Church and started investigating other churches I heard alot more negative stuff said about Catholics. Now I am a full time Catholic youth minister and I live in the southern U.S. I spend at least 3 hours a week deprogramming my kids from youth group because of of things they are told by their friends in school about Catholics that their friends were actually told in church.

My favorite ones from just this past week are
  1. Constantine was a pope.
  2. Catholics go to mass to get drunk
  3. The Catholic church didn’t exist until the 5th century
  4. Mary helped create the earth
  5. Mary forgives sins
  6. The Pope is God/Jesus reincarnate.
  7. Catholics hate education
  8. Catholics are in favor of illegal immigration because all immigrants are “dumb and poor catholics”.
  9. Catholic Church endorsed Birth Control until 1930.
  10. Catholic Church used to endorse abortion
And people wonder why my blogs tend to lack charity.

I’m just glad I found the truth.

I am a Roman Catholic and I can honestly say I have never heard from the pulpit at a Catholic Church, a priest or deacon bashing another religion. I cannot say the same about the Anglican/Episcopalian services I’ve attended. About 10 years ago my closest friend, an Episcopalian, was singing at a special service. I went to the Saturday Mass and to her service on Sunday. The Espiscopalian priest was about to move, had inadvertantly packed his vestements and had to borrow from my priest. I found this out because he commented that they weren’t right but he had to borrow them from the Catholic priest (one of the finest I’ve ever had the privilege to know). He could have just said nothing or just thanked my pastor.

A few years later, this friend visited me in England. She wanted to see a magnificent cathedral, so again I went to Saturday Mass and we went to the service at the Ely Cathedral (Suffolk - which I consider stolen because it was built prior to 1537 but that is another story). This was Christian Unity Sunday and from the pulpit the Anglican Bishop of Ely proceeded to bash Catholics from the pulpit. My friend felt me tense up, but I made it through the rest of the service. This opened up a great conversation. She asked me why I was Catholic and I said that Jesus said, “You are Rock and upon this Rock I shall build my Church.” And she answered, “And who are you to question Christ?”

This may be another thread – I am new to this – but I would be interested if anyone has heard true “anti” rhetoric from a Catholic pulpit. Thanks.
 
My pastors occasionally mentioned Catholics for laughs in my last church. Once the head pator said that he knew a lot of the congregation didn’t think Catholics were saved. People giggled, and he said that some Catholics were doing more for the Kingdom than some of us were. The pulpit wasn’t anti-Catholic so much as it was glad-we’re-here-in-this-good-church-and-not-a-boring-ordinary-church. But pastor was right. There was a lot of Anti-Catholicism in the pews going without challenge, spreading from person to person as a side issue or footnote to much of the literature we all passed around. The main messages we were trying to share had to do with totally different subjects. It was stuff we weren’t finding answers to elsewhere, such as healing and emotional/mental issues, and post-traumatic symptoms, and fear of the future in a society that is falling apart, we were trying to help each other with. But where did most of the Christian pop literature on those topics come from? Most from either a prosperity-teaching point of view or a paranoia-driven, anti-everything-different, calculating-the-date-of-the-last-day attitude. It was confusing to say the least.
My first church, the pastor was a former Catholic and he actually introduced ideas such as Advent.

You know, my mom said that my grandfather used to tell my grandmother he was going to church (Both Polish Catholics), but instead go to the bar… until my grandmother found out!

Anyway, I never really heard any of those. Also, when I was raised Lutheran, the only thing we learned about the Catholic church was that Luther broke away from it and some of the reasons why, and that it “became corrupt” around 400AD (from a video we watched at a youth group, but they never explained that, nor the previous 400 years.). So, that led me (and probably others) to think that the only Chrstian church around were Lutherans. We never learned of Baptists, Methodists, Anglicans, etc., although when my mom was in her confirmation classes, they did go to a different denominational church (except for Catholic churches…).

My Church teaches us that the Church of Rome is outsdie the Unity of the Church of Christ because of the heretical teachings adopted by the Roman Pontiffs, including the Filioque, the Papacy, Infallibility of the Papcy, Immaculate Conception, Purgatory, and others, as well as the persecution and martyrdoms of Orthodox Christians by such so-called Catholic “Saints” and Holy Men as Josaphat Kuntsevich and Cardinal Stepinac.
I was raised Catholic, and when I converted to Orthodoxy, was told I had to be baptised-NOT “baptised again,” since the Roman “baptism” conveyed no grace-but simply Baptised into Christ’s Holy Church.

This is very interesting. How can one be brought into Christ’s Holy Church without grace?
 
My husband belongs to a Pentecostal church and until very recently (within the last 5 weeks) I’ve finally gathered the strength to stop bringing myself and my 4 year old to his church, and am now attending mass 🙂 with the support of my husband. He’s never forced me to go to his church, and has, in the past, attended Mass with me and our son.

Anyhow, during the past 5 years, this is what DH’s pastor (who’s also his uncle) has preached during sermons:
  1. Priests use spit to baptize babies.
  2. Catholics don’t accept Jesus as their Saviour.
  3. The Catholic Bibles should be thrown away.
  4. Catholics and Mormons are the ones who God wants us to witness to.
  5. Catholics don’t experience blessings since they don’t enforce tithing.
  6. The Mass lacks the Holy Spirit because “all they have is their Mary.”
There are many many more things said about the Church by this pastor, who is a former Catholic, but it would take days for me to list them all.
