I think the species, how it is process, and where it came from are important in terms of health and medical reasons more than moral reasons since the main difference to me between and animal and a human is the soul. At no time should animals be needlessly harm or tortured, particularly for the sensual gratification of the person doing harm.

I have eaten a variety of animals myself coming from a Vietnamese background. And I have also eaten a variety of fruits. I have not eaten dogs or cats if you are wondering.

So there are no moral reasons that should govern how we treat animals?

Yes there are moral guidelines on how we treat animals. This is because we are stewards of God’s gifts and creation as mentioned in Genesis. In fact, if you look in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, you will fine about 2-3 paragraphs on our role as a faithful, fruitful, willing, and honest steward. In this regards we must treat animals with respect due to the fact they are created by God and use our relationships with them to nourish and encourage our own moral understandings and learnings.

Given this, we must also be clear that animals are never humans. They are still creatures created without a rational soul. The only visible creatures that are both able to know and love its creator is humanity. Angles can do the same I would gather but they are not created materially, which is what I believe “visible” refers to such as mentioned in the Apostles’ Creed.

Additional Note; I only saw about 5 seconds of the video because it is harmful to my mind to view depictions of horror. I do not know which animals are slain besides the one dog I did see. Others may be able to handle watching the movie or even take action. I can take action, but it is not good for me to watch such scenes. If there is anything in particular I should know, please inform me in text. I would appreciate it.

To answer the OP question again in the context of the post I quoted, yes we can eat animals and various animals. We draw the line at the health issues as well as how the animals are prepared. Animals cause to needlessly suffer as shown in the videos are not proper stewardship. I do not know how grave of the situation it would be, but I would conjecture that if knowledge and deliberate action existed around the painful slaughter of these animals, then it could be a mortal sin. It would be even more damaging to the soul if delight or satisfaction is taken in causing the animals to suffer – referring to intention.

Hmm, does the species matter? That’s a good question. The treatment of the animal is important. But what if someone raised dogs on a farm like cattle, and treated them the same way, and slaughtered them for food? Would that be morally wrong? I don’t see how it could be, but then again, I’m not really a dog person.

😃

No, Jesus taught clearly that nothing that enters your mouth is sinful. It is what comes out of you that is sinful (e.g. internal immoral thoughts and external bad behavior). However, with that said, the law of a particular country for a legitimate reason might prohibit the killing of pets and endangered species as well as the sale and distribution of their meat. Also, in some non-Christian countries, the sale, distribution, and consumption of pork, beef, or other products might be prohibited on religious grounds in order to safeguard the peace among the peoples of the land. As Christians we must follow the law of the land we reside at whenever it does not violate God’s moral law and we are instructed by St. Paul in scripture that whenever our food preferences offends our non-Christian friends at table we must observe their custom so as not to cause a fight or become a stumbling block to the faith.

I’m not sure there’s anything inherently wrong about eating dogs or cats. I wouldn’t want to though, and I wouldn’t want to eat anything that was processed cruelly- as these dogs seem to be).

I wonder if this organization that posted the video feels as strongly about protecting the many babies that are aborted in china as they do about protecting the dogs.

Thereis nothing morally wrong with eating any animal. Dog, cat, Dolphin, you name it. We ARE called to stewardship, so we shouldn’t be eating or killing an animal to extinction.

I am a huge dolphin nut, and I get a little frustrated at these cheeseburger eating people getting all over people who eat whales. Whatever happened to cultural tolerance?

Also, my dad always said (and i agree) that the best way to save an endangered animal is to make it edible! 😉 (think: panda farms 😉 )

If you watch the video it’s pretty brutal. Americans and other Westerners will be horrified by how these dogs are treated, but, as you say, think nothing of eating a cheeseburger. Should there be a cultural tolerance for animal abuse??? Americans have industrialized animal abuse through factory farming–and this is OK with everyone–as long as we don’t SEE what’s going on…

For you, some dolphins: tiny.cc/fGVg5 Trailer for the new documentary film THE COVE.
Flipper soup: they catch the dolphins, cut off their fins (without anesthetic), and throw them back into the water (they only want the fins) to die.

Good stewardship? Needful suffering??? Cruelty???

I don’t think species makes much difference. It is mostly a matter of cultural conditioning.

I would begin to get uncomfortable with animals who are closer to humans in some ways - I don’t think I could eat a chimp, though I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s immoral.

My husband once (unwittingly) ate dog. He realized when he came out of the place he had just had a rather nasty meal, and saw that the “lamb” on the spit had paws.

Are you familiar with factory farming?? Old MacDonald sold his farm to the industrial revolution and we now have CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations), Animals aren’t treated very well, and most of them ***never ***see the light of day, or feel grass under their feet.

Should there be a standard for how** all **animals are treated, regardless of their species, their purpose (as determined by humans), or the culture in which they are found?

Is it OK to torture dogs in China, Korea, Vietnam, etc., and in Western society treat them as man’s best friend?

Is eating the same as torturing and killing? As Catholics we are told that causing an animal to suffer is wrong. Can you eat anything and wash your hands of the deeds done previously to the animal, because it was not done by your own hand?

You can’t view horror… But meat is just food, right??? That’s what some other posters seem to be saying–it is OK to eat meat… Can we really extract ourselves from the horror? Is that maybe too convenient? Is it OK to extract ourselves from the horror, or do we have a responsibility to God, to His creation, to His animals,*** to address ***the horror???

Honestly, no, I am not familiar with it. I am not much of an animal rights activist, but I believe it is wrong to needlessly harm or torture animals.

(I love your name!)

It was when I learned where 95% of the meat, and dairy comes from (CAFO) that about 3 years ago I had to make a change — another poster said something about - if we know that there is suffering of the animals, and we ignore it that might be a moral sin? What do you think?

This video is also a bit graphic - but concerns the way animals ARE raised for food in the US

You will notice that Marfran doesn’t want to have a discussion.

He wants you to stop eating meat.

It is really the reason for most if not all of his threads and posts. 🤷

Oh I’m not defending the meat industry. All forms of cruelty to animals is disgusting. I personally have eaten farm raised and humanely slaughtered beef most of my life.

I have seen the treatment of dolphins and dogs in several videos online. It’s disgusting, and it should be regulated to avoid cruely, I agree. However, the eating of the animals in and of itself is not wrong.

Hi!

If you’ve personally had access to farm raised and humanely slaughtered beef, you are in a very small % of people in the west ---- do you also have access to dairy that is not part of a CAFO? Most of us don’t.

One would have to also avoid McDonalds, Burger King, etc… to be sure that they avoided factory farm meat too, to avoid the unregulated cruelty.

Yes, because it is not a sin to eat meat. What would be the preferable way to kill an animal before processing?

Let us not rush to judgement. Many are here posting in the freedom of their American home yet would not be capable of killing in order to preserve that freedom. I have no problem with a man or woman eating a cheeseburger, yet not being of the constitution that could take a hammer to a cow. Ranchers understand that they do for all what all can not do. It is part of the life.

I do a job that many have told me they could never do. I do not resent in the least that others benefit who could not perform it. That is fine. I believe the burden of evidence falls on the one who says eating meat is sinful, or one method of butchering is sinful, to show why.

For me, I only eat dolphin-free dog.
