Not so in the case of cancer. Such a condition must be communicable, and cancer is not communicable between species or within species. While the infectious agent or common-source carcinogen may be responsible for the agent which causes cancer, the cancer cells themselves are not communicable, especially between species.

The exception in same-species transmission might be one in an immunocompromised state, and there are probably a few other extremely rare exceptions.
Well then, maybe we should grow tumors in a lab and eat them!!! We could bypass eating the animals directly and just eat the tumors. The tumors would be growing wildly, and faster than corn feed cows or Chinese dogs, and we would not have to worry about getting cancer from eating the tumors!

Actually I hear that lab meat is just around the corner. Get your forks ready…

I’m not sure that it actually can or does, and I was only speaking about same-species transmission.

Interspecies transmission of cancer simply does not occur, so your vegan status is irrelevant in protecting you from cancer from the foods you eat. You still need to be concerned, if you aren’t already, about potential problems from pesticides on the fruits and veggies that we get.

Say what??? Apparently you haven’t read ***The China Study ***by T. Collin Campbell. Consuming animal products ***is ***connected to cancer and other diseases. Not in species-to-species transmission, but animal protein has been shown to be the trigger to turning cancer and other diseases on in our human bodies. This book is written by a researcher (who incidently grew up on a dairy farm) and spans fifty years of numerous studies and lab trials.

Pesticides on fruit and veggies??? Many of us are growing our own and/or buying organic.

Just a response to the original post.

If I am not wrong, dogs were the first animals to be domesticated by Man. There was this unwritten contract between Man and dog for dog to protect and help hunt for food and Man to feed and shelter dog. I have found a dog’s loyalty to be unparalled. I have seen a dog kicked by its owner go back to him, tail wagging. So I do not think it is only an issue of Western culture for the aversion to eating dog meat.

Saying that, if you believe it is wrong to kill and eat animals, it is all animals.

Perhaps. There are also studies that suggest that animal proteins have nothing to do with the development of cancer. 🤷 It is better to say that there appears to be, based on certain studies, a link between the consumption of animal proteins and the development of cancer in humans. The link remains unproven, scientifically speaking, until someone is able to conclusively induce cancer in a human being with the administration of animal proteins; to date, I’m certain that has not been done.

In any case, that has nothing to do with what I wrote i.e. that eating animal cancer cells does not give people cancer.

You want to do what??? Are you volunteering to eat a high animal product diet while being exposed to high levels of carginogens??? In ***The China Study *** the medical community was alerted to an alarmingly high rate of liver cancer in Chinese children. Scientists were called in to figure out what was going on. There was a highly carcinogenic mold found in crops in China. At first it was thought to be the culprit. The odd thing was though, that the rural Chinese who ate almost NO animal products, and who were highly exposed to this mold, were NOT the ones getting the cancer.

It was the affluent Chinese in the cities, who were eating a Western diet high in animal products who were getting the liver cancer. The mold was highly carcinogenic but did not cause cancer in the rural Chinese, only in the urban Chinese eating animal proteins. This phenomenon prompted decades of studies and research. This book is well worth reading, especially if one has concerns about why cancer has become so prevalent in TODAY’s society.

A other animals you are eating that most likely have illnesses, including cancer. You are in fact swallowing all those cancer cells.

.
I’m far from worried…

according to you vegans i should be half-dead by now…

instead i am in very good health…

unlike Linda McCartney and a few other vegans i could mention…

Did you know that in this country alone 50 million children have been slaughtered since 1973?

Do you actually read what I post, M?

That does not prove that the animal proteins ***cause ***cancer, as you stated earlier, but that the animal proteins may be a factor in the development of cancer in those exposed to a carcinogenic mold. As well, there are more factors involved in city vs. rural living that may have been a factor.

You’re going from A to B but lacking the scientific reasoning to do so.

A few more studies that link eating high quantities of animal protein with cancer, quoting reports from the Lancet, the Cancer Research Institute, Physiology Review;
Letter for Doctors & Patients, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Science…

I think sometimes it is also just the ‘duh’ question to me (do you ever hear a science report and just say ‘duh’ - of course, like texting while driving is dangerous - DUH!) - to me the ‘duh’ on this is how long food takes to digest (length of time in the colon) animal protein, vs plant protein - the longer in the body the longer chance to be exposed to carcinogenic factors right 🤷 - a clean colon is a happy colon! 😉

so even dogs should be forced to become vegan??

against their very nature… just like humans…

hmmmm… :hmmm:
Here again. People want to use a comparison of people to animals when they want to support eating meat but argue against the comparison of people to animals when the argument is against eating meat. Go one way or the other. Don’t be so wishy washy. It makes for a really weak argument. Either dogs are like us (equal to us) and we all need meat or there is no comparison between human and animals since we are the (so called) superior being. Pick one or the other.

Yes, because it is not a sin to eat meat. What would be the preferable way to kill an animal before processing?

Let us not rush to judgement. Many are here posting in the freedom of their American home yet would not be capable of killing in order to preserve that freedom. I have no problem with a man or woman eating a cheeseburger, yet not being of the constitution that could take a hammer to a cow. Ranchers understand that they do for all what all can not do. It is part of the life.

I do a job that many have told me they could never do. I do not resent in the least that others benefit who could not perform it. That is fine. I believe the burden of evidence falls on the one who says eating meat is sinful, or one method of butchering is sinful, to show why.

For me, I only eat dolphin-free dog.
I always find it odd that someone finds pride in being able to look another living being in the eye, nurture it, and then kill it. There’s something wrong with that picture. I read and hear so often…I raised it, fed it, cared for it, bonded with it, looked it in the eye, felt bad but killed it anyway for the good of all. I had to be the strong one. Get real! There’s just something lacking in people who do this. Somewhere along the line they didn’t develop empathy. It’s a psychological issue. Maybe something to do with power and control???

The video is from COK, a nonprofit animal advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C. Working to end animal abuse since 1995, COK focuses on cruelty to animals in agriculture.

I think this is kind of an odd comment as this organization has its specific focus, as do all organizations.

I was on a Wal-Mart thread a while back where we did bring up the abortion issue as it is connected to all the Chinese products carried by Walmart. Many Catholics on that thread refused to stop shopping at Walmart, and refused to stop purchasing cheap products in the stores from China, because it was more important to them to get their products “cheap,” than to care about how their purchases affected the lives of other human beings.
Marfran,
I wasn’t aware of the Walmart issue. NO CATHOLIC should be shopping at Walmart if they really are pro-life! I may search that thread and see how they supported their choice to continue shopping there as most Catholics are quite adamant about the abortion issue. If they are shopping at walmart they are supporting abortion. No if’s and’s or but’s! Once again, it becomes an if it benefits me situation I’ll find a way around it. Do any of these people have the backbone to stand up for anything that may inconvience them in some way??? Looks like a big NO! And the Catholics that are offended by those remarks you are most likely one of those people that I’m talking about. If you are going to follow the bible then follow it. It’s not about if you are inconvienced in life. It’s about doing the right thing. Anybody can make excuses so it benefits them so they suffer no inconviences in life.

None of us should talk in absolute terms about the cause or causes of cancer, because it is not clear yet. Scientists do not know, much less any of us.
What I had meant to say in my earlier post, is that given the so many unknowns about the disease, and given the fact that some studies have found correlation between the consumption of meat and cancer, I would not consume the flesh of an animal with metastatic cancer, for example. Just in case.Would you, truthfully?Truthfully now?
Many cases go undiagnosed in humans,I image that animal meat inspectors may pass as healthy animals that are not as well.
As mammals, we share some of the physical characteristics of some animals we eat.(wether we like it or not).
If those animals are sick, that may be transferred to us, like in the case of trichinosis(for eating pig, dogs, etc (unless you cook the meat thoroughly)
Mad cow disease, HIV I believe I heard started in animals as well, to name a few that can pass to humans .When the habitat(our bodies)are similar to that of certain animals,
illnesses may find suitable, ground to survive thrive and multiply.

On the other hand we are genetically very different to vegetables and fruits.

Especially in light that one of the circulating hypothesis about at least one of the causes for cancer(there may be several) is that it could be a virus .

But what about if you believe it is wrong *to be cruel and abusive *to animals. Does that go for ***all ***animals? Can we be selective? In today’s modern society we are appalled by the mistreatment of dogs and cats. We are appalled with Michael Vick. Yet we think nothing of the cruelty and suffering endured by “factory” farm animals–or choose to be ***purposefully unaware ***or to ignore their plight, in favor of the pleasure of a cheeeseburger. Does our society have a schizophrenic view/attitude toward animals?? Does our morality in the treatment of animals need to face up to some of the “realities” that we prefer not to know about?

Dude, you should read the book. It can explain it better than I. Lots of experiments on lab rats and mice in the book too (decades of experiments). After noticing the high rate of liver cancer in the urban Chinese children, and the strange fact that this was not occurring in the rural Chinese (who had even higher exposures to the carcinogenic mold), scientists set out to replicate the results in the lab.

Using rats and mice they would expose them to high levels of the same carcinogenic mold that was the suspect of the Chinese cancer cases. Suspecting that the consumption of animal products was somehow linked, they would feed groups of rats and mice animal protein and also expose them to the carcinogen. Another group would only be exposed to the carcinogen and eat its regular herbivorous diet. They also implanted cancer cells to mice/rats in many of these trials. It was found that just exposure to the carcinogen did not cause cancer to develop, but exposure in addition to consuming an animal protein diet did. They varied the levels of exposure, amount of carcinogen, and levels of animal protein consumed. (And of course they had the control groups who had neither exposure to the carcinogen nor an animal protein diet.)

***The China Study ***is really a great read. I highly recommend.

More people ***do not ***do this. In today’s society most people are removed from the slaughter and butchering of their meat. And in the words of Paul McCartney “If slaughterhouses had glass walls we would all be vegetarians.”

I think that if you want to eat meat, and are willing to verbally argue about “your right” to eat it, then you should not be a ***** about killing and butchering it yourself. It is the coward who talks about his right to eat a dead animal, but will not kill it and butcher it.

And yes, the people who take pleasure in hunting etc. have psychological issues. (And what about all the workers in factory farms and slaughterhouses? Can they have normal relationships with *people *when they are committing violence and killing all day? The biggest warning sign in children for future violence to humans, is children hurting or killing animals. What about adults who do this for a living?) Hemmingway once said that the reason he hunted was because he had to take his aggressions out on something, and it was better to take it out on animals than people (paraphrasing there).

And how about the dogs being tortured in this video? Meat eaten from one of these dogs is supposed to improve one’s sexual prowess. Why don’t the guys who want to improve their virility beat and kill the dogs themselves??

So Marfran,

People should be willing to kill any animal they are willing to eat. But the ones that do kill animals they are willing to eat have “psychological issues?”

We are back to the fact that you have an agenda. People should not eat meat and every thread you start eventually comes around to that.

People should be willing to kill any animal they are willing to eat. Absolutely. And if you can’t kill it, then you need to examine why you are willing to eat it ***only ***if someone else has done the “dirty work” for you. If you are uncomfortable with the act of killing the food that you “need,” then maybe you don’t need it so much after all.

But the ones that do kill animals they are willing to eat have "psychological issues?" If they take pleasure in it, yes. Children who kill animals often progress to commit violence against people. This is a psychological problem. Workers in slaughterhouses can have issues too. Some may take the job because they need the money, and abhor the work. Others find a perverse pleasure in it–and then there are those like the great writer E. Hemmingway, who openly admitted that killing animals was a release for his aggressions.

***We are back to the fact that you have an agenda. People should not eat meat and every thread you start eventually comes around to that. ***

agenda: program of things to be done; specifically, a list of of things to be dealt with at a meeting.* Webster’s*

Say what, sister??? I work with animals. They are my profession. I naturally gravitate to “animal topics” as this is my area of expertise. I am Catholic. I appreciate the influence that St. Francis and other vegetarian saints have had on our Church. I also appreciate the writings of Matthew Scully, Dr. Deborah Jones (Catholic theologian), and other Catholics as to our modern society’s treatment of animals.

I naturally start threads with animal themes and concerns. So you are complaining, why??? If you do not like to discuss these issues why come to any thread concerning them, especially a thread that I have started???

No, I don’t eat meat, and I am glad to share why I don’t with anyone who is interested, either out of curiosity, interest in making the same choice, or interest in learning of the health benefits, ethical arguments for, etc.

maryjk: what is your agenda??? What are you all about??? Why do *you *like animal threads so much???

I think that we all have to be who we are–and I find it interesting to have discussions with folks who have differing vantage points. It certainly makes for “lively” conversation, does it not?
