My wife and I are very close to our neighbors, who are Lutheran. The other evening the news of the new Anglican members of the Church prompted a question that led to a bulky conversation among 4 people who clearly are not theologians.
My friend asked if a Catholic priest, under any circumstances whatsoever, could be allowed to marry and still be allowed to serve as a priest. My wife and I explained that was impossible. He then asked if the discipline of continence were no longer required, was there any way at all that a Catholic priest ordained under the discipline would be allowed to marry–basically excused from the vow. After saying that would never happen, I agreed to ask. I’m too embarrassed to ask my wonderful pastor who would think I was off my rocker. So am I correct? Isn’t it impossible, even under such an unlikely scenario for current priest to be allowed to marry even if the discipline were made optional? My apolpgies for this question, but I did agree to ask. (my wife said I should just pretend to ask, but that wouldn’t feel right.)
