Cardinal Dolan was trying to dismiss speculation being thrust at him, that he might be the next pope. Perhaps he could have found better words, but I wouldn’t make too much of it.

I took it the opposite. Since dope is more general slang for marijuana or other illicit drugs, it fits with an offhanded remark I can imagine Dolan saying, equivalent to “Those people are high,” or “Those people are on drugs.” I was surprised when I read the article to see that he named the specific drug, making his facetious accusation less slapstick, more scientific and clinical.

If it means anything the “progressive” Catholics we were talking about in the other thread hate him. So, I’m thinking he must be doing something right. I would love to see him do more though as I mentioned in my earlier post.

And like a pp said, his comment wasn’t as nearly as bad as the title makes it seem.

As another poster said, this isn’t always true. Regardless, it’s still against Church doctrine and canon law for a politician to support abortion…so my question still remains.
 
I love Cardinal Dolan. The fact that some CAF posters are posting mean remarks about him on other threads sounds sinful and mean-spirited to me. I would suggest that those who don’t like him to pray to the Holy Spirit and ask His guidance, and for an increase in the virtue of charity.😃
 
Has anyone watched Card. Dolan’s shows on EWTN? His insight to the spiritual life is amazing, his delivery captivating, his insight penetrating & his love for Jesus & Mary engulfs him.

He isn’t afraid of anyone, except maybe Shirley Dolan, his mom!!! He seems comfortable in his own skin; seems to be his own man. He was voted president of US Cath Bishops conference last go round: USCCB which was unexpected.

We need in a new Pope a great people person, who has the smarts, humility, holiness, determination to forge ahead. Humor helps with a bumpy road.

Dolan keeps his eyes riveted to Jesus Christ. You can tell that. He just might be a long shot but so was Pope JP2.

:amen: Yes I’ve seen him on EWTN and found him as captivating, enthusiastic, warm, intelligent, and as faithful to Holy Mother Church as Fulton Sheen. 👍

How about directly and pointedly addressing the problems in the Church? Reporters know that when they interview him, he will answer anything.

He’s genuine and honest, and a good face for the American Church. So, why don’t we just keep him?🙂

If you are referring to the Al Smith Dinner prior to the election, that is specifically a time when the church and candidates put aside their differences for one night to come together for a good cause. This has been the case every four years.

There is a time and a place for everything, the mark of a good statesman (yes, a Cardinal and a Pope are statesmen) is knowing when and how to engage those who oppose you. I believe Cardinal Dolan understands this quite well.

If this is your hangup, then you need to get over yourself and understand the history of the Al Smith event a lot better. Cardinal Dolan, after the event, went right back on the offensive on this matter.
