Dolan: Whoever thinks he could be next Pope must be on dope

As pointed out by another poster, “duplicity” is an extremely insulting, uncharitable, and, in his case, patently false, accusation to make about this good and holy man, Cardinal Dolan. He is outspoken about pro-life issues, thoroughly orthodox, and in no way “liberal”, except in those areas where Church teaching itself might be considered “liberal” by Tea Party standards (immigration issues, for example.)

He is also - as demonstrated by the Al Smith dinner - keenly aware that it is wise to “keep your enemies close…” That doesn’t demonstrate duplicity, but rather political savviness - something much needed these days in our present anti-Catholic environment.

I tend to think this is what we are seeing as well. To be fair to Liza, I also get frustrated with what appears to be politicking on the part of our bishops. For example, I would like to see our bishops come down hard on our Catholic politicians. I truly scratch my head over the fact that there isn’t more done about them. Why? Although they are statesman it seems to me that they are churchmen first, no?

I would be shocked if this hasn’t been discussed at higher levels. The Church Hierarchy has likely made a determination as how to proceed. I will trust their judgment on how to deal with Catholic Politicians, and otherwise focus on keeping my own house in order. It’s tough enough for a sinner like me to be worried about my own soul, let alone a Catholic Politician. At any rate, final judgment for a Catholic Politician is not of this world.

Keep focused on the tenets of Lent… Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving.

Why do I feel like you are pontificating to me here? And why is it bothering me?

I know. Probably because you made a point of telling Liza to “get over herself”.

I am working on prayer, fasting and almsgiving, thanks. I can also express my concern over what appears ot be a lack of action on the part of our Church heirarchy.

Dolan keeps his eyes riveted to Jesus Christ. You can tell that. He just might be a long shot but so was Pope JP2.

I tend to agree with you in that Cardinal Dolan is a very charming, charismatic person and seems to be a born leader. A leader has to be wily in certain situations and bide his time in certain things. He can’t go around fighting with everyone. And let’s face it, with the way things are in our country and world, there are plenty of things to fight about.
As for his sense of humor…to me, it’s a way for him to put off the wolfish media. They’re out for blood when it comes to all things Christian and Catholic in particular. And I think there’s something wrong with a person lacking in humor. Seriousness to the point of fanaticism is never a good thing.
 
Even the Italians are now talking about Dolan. He keeps denying, but I can’t help but think of that scene from The Shoes of the Fisherman where the Cardinal is being acclaimed as Pope, all the while begging his fellows to reconsider.

It seems that there is more and more recognition that the Vatican needs to spend some considerable amount of time cleaning house and stitching up the internal strife in the Curia. If they want a strong administrator, it makes sense to look at North America for a candidate - where politics (in every sense of the word) is part of the common task of a churchman.

Still not sure they’d pick someone who claims to speak little Italian to be Pope…but maybe he speaks more than he lets on.

The Communion denial has already taken place, owing to the Governor’s openly living with his mistress.

Actually, it’s my understanding that he has not been denied communion…only that there were calls for it. Do you have a source for this?

I have been praying for the election of Cardinal Dolan as our next Holy Father. Yes, I know all of the reasons why he cannot be the next Pope, but…

He is charming, disarming, warm, and attractively conservative. He can make the conservative arguments for the Church in a way that is tolerable and even desirable to the most liberal in our Church. His every-man approach and sense of humor is wonderful and refreshing and he could do wonders to bring back those that have lost faith in our Church. On more than one meeting with Pope Benedict, he had the Holy Father belly-laughing at something he said. Surely, he is well liked by Benedict! Personally speaking, I have never felt this way about an American Cardinal before.

This holy man was born to lead, and lead he must!🙂

As far as I understand it, Cuomo lives in Albany, Dolan is the archbishop of New York City. That would mean Cuomo falls under the “jurisdiction” of Bishop Hubbard and not Cardinal Dolan.
 
Eh, it’s a little off-color, but it doesn’t strike me as that big of a deal. 🤷

My favorite response to the question on whether or not he could be elected pope was the cardinal who said he had already bought his round-trip ticket to Rome. 🙂 I thought that was a funnier answer than Dolan’s.

That was Bl. John XXIII. And he really did have the return ticket home in his pocket when he was elected Pope.

If the Bishop denied Cuomo communion it would be all over the news. There is none. I think it’s pretty safe to say Cuomo is still receiving communion …with the Bishop’s blessing.

IME the most liberal in our Church hate him. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, just that I disagree with your assessment.

I’m not sure how I feel about him as Pope. I think we need him in the US.
