Thank you.
In speaking of anything to do with homosexuality, homosexuals, etc, can there ever be a word to describe a person/their lifestyle that doesn’t conjure up hard feelings?
I take my cues from the Bishops, in most cases, who are very careful because they do not intend to purposefully, or unduly offend.
There are terms that trigger me. Instead of allowing that first reaction to guide me, react or explode, I listen to what they are saying, - or try. These are terms that are not derogatory but do describe conditions I am in or have come from.
In the case of the Sr who is trying to present that and with researches she has chosen, it would seem hard for her to describe something that no matter what terminology you use, someone isn’t going to like it and weighing it with it needs to be discussed anyway.
I can assure you when I use it, it doesn’t mean they are less human in any way, but there remains actions in each particular deviant sexual behavior that does that because of whose likeness we are made in - not a looking down on someone.
Unfortunately, society in general has determined that anything that is not an absolute approval and support of all things gay is bigotry and hate. When someone is starting out with that assumption, it’s hard not to offend them.

We have to make sure that what we are getting across is that the reason we are telling them what we are, is because we care about the person and not about making everyone toe the Catholic line.

Yes.
The whole purpose of the Church is to get the person to heaven and to let them know whose image and likeness they are made in. That there are things we can do, actions, that mar that image (sinful) and do affect others (laws passed/redefining) is a reality. To ignore it would be to deny reality.

Talks are not designed to replace a relationship they should be working on or have with others.

Since Sr does focus on TOB, I will admit there are some presenters I DO NOT CARE FOR THEIR IMAGES, COMPARISONS, ETC. I have to admit, there are many in my circles that do find them to be not only very helpful, but healing has occurred in areas of their life. That is real and I acknowledge it. I chose a different presenter of TOB for my own personal use.

What JPII was saying is that our bodies, and what we do with them (actions), do mean something. They are either reflecting the image of God or not in some circumstances.

We have those with SSA who have come from an active lifestyle that we try to listen to what it was like (researches). It doesn’t mean it was all horrible, as it would be wrong to convey the message that all who come from broken homes that everything was bad. BUT it does mean they are finding some things present (research). It does mean that a child does the best with a mother and father who are in a healthy relationship. Even our president admitted that absent fathers (those in prison) were having a negative effect on especially young men. But the answer isn’t just another person (two men/two females) but helping that marriage.

It is also giving those young people information that they may need later on.

A talk can not cover every single area and wasn’t designed to. One thing I didn’t like was the parents were not told ahead of time. It seems that was an unfortunate mistake. As a parent, I have opted out of some things with my kids just because of what we were going through but not because the message was necessarily wrong. They will hear it, just timing wasn’t perfect.

I have friends who are LGBT and I’ve never been called bigoted by them for opposing gay marriage because I oppose it without being a bigot (something many Christians fail at).

I guess I just have a simple view of things. But if you are not against Homosexuality then don’t claim to be catholic. And if you are against the teachings of the Church then don’t attend that school. I am far from perfect and really feel lost more days than not but I really hate when people try to change God’s teachings instead of changing their life to fit those teachings. There is no wonder the bible says most people will go to hell.
Its a very good and proper thing that the church does not teach Sola Scriptura. Once you are baptized Catholic, you are a CATHOLIC for life.

Has anyone found a recording of Sister’s presentation or even of a previous lecture? I would really like the opportunity to read for myself what was presented.

As far as I know, her talk at that high school was not recorded.

She does have recorded talks/presentations here:

On that point, below is an excerpt of an interesting piece, Sister Jane in the Lion’s Den
Again, as far as I know, there is no recording or text of the nun’s speech available, so unless you were there, you don’t have any way of knowing whether the talk was over the line or not. Some of their complaints (see the petition) indicate that the nun may have said some bizarre things. It is possible to present orthodox Catholic teaching in an offensive way. On the other hand, the priest said Sister Jane was right on target. It could be that these Catholic students were being told the Catholic truth, and they thought she was giving them hell. I don’t know, and unless you were there, you don’t either.
But look, if these students are objecting to a straightforward presentation of Catholic moral teaching on homosexuality, then they’re nuts. **You go to a Catholic school, you should expect to be exposed to Catholic teaching. This is not a bug; it’s a feature. **That it would even be at issue shows how far things have decayed. It’s one thing to have heard Catholic teaching at a Catholic school and to disagree with it. But to have a massive public fit over a nun being invited to the school and teaching what the Catholic faith teaches — that is, to protest that the school “allow[ed] these ideas to be expressed” — shows how far things have declined.
The whole piece of writing is a short worth while read.

You obviously have friends who aren’t under that assumption. I’d keep those friends. 😃

I’ve never been called a bigot on my views of homosexual behavior, but I have for stating that I’m a practicing Catholic. Go figure.

I’ve seen bigots on both sides.

There’s been*** another ***debacle at another Catholic school over a talk by a priest, who has been, predictably now, thrown under the bus. Is there a thread on it somewhere?

Fr. Z: The Magisterium of Sophomores: another High School explosion

Prout principal will not resign after controversial assembly
This talk was taped and was scheduled to air. But the offended parents don’t want the speech to air. Funny how that works. Seems like someone doesn’t want the truth proclaimed, only their spin on the talk.

I don’t think anybody can prevent the airing of the audio portion of the tape, (but if children are filmed without permission, then video can’t be shown, I think).

However, there is a comment below the Independent article that says (my bolding):
So I go to Prout and was at the assembly. **First off, we knew that this was a radio broadcast **(IDK what this article is talking about), that was made perfectly clear to us, in fact, we were supposed to ask questions to Fr. Hoffman. Students whose questions were chosen, would get to ask them on the radio station. Questions were asked about gay marriage, abortion, and other theological issues. Fr. Rocky answered them all the way you’d expect him to. The problem was that for entertainment purposes, he said some dumb things: atheism is just a phase, gay people need to get with it (something to that affect), parents need to grow up and not get divorced (even though marriage is about love)…the way he said somethings didn’t fit in with the idea of a loving and open Church. Aside from that, a lot of students that go hear don’t believe in a lot of stuff the church teachers. There’s a good amount of atheists.
But to be totally and 100% honest, I felt that everyone completely over-reacted.

Furthermore, there is no reason to blame Mr. Carradini for Fr. Rocky’s performance. It would’ve been too awkward to stop him midway and the priest wasn’t that terrible. In fact a lot of kids were still clapping for him when he signaled them too. There was definitely some questioning in the audience - if they expected him to stop the assembly, why were they still clapping…

*Approximately 50 parents appeared at the assembly uninvited and met with Carradini after it finished. Schlenz was among them.

When she reached Carradini by phone Saturday, she asked what he was doing to ensure the speech would not be broadcast and was told he had spoken to a board member of Relevant Radio.

During Monday’s meeting, she asked him which board member.

“I am not prepared to answer,” Carradini reportedly said. “Why do you want to know?”

When she pressed him, Schlenz said he told the parents the board member was his brother-in-law, Joseph Cavangh Jr. of Warwick, also an Opus Dei member.

“I wanted to see how transparent he would be,” Schlenz said.

Schlenz and other parents contend Carradini knew **Hoffman’s views were outside the mainstream of Catholic teaching *and reflect a movement to make The Prout School, which has had a reputation for being accepting, into one that is less than tolerant. The Prout School has been a school of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence since 1981, and enrolls approximately 605 students in grades 9 through 12.

The dissidents want to silence Catholic teaching and change it.

This young student obviously has not been taught the Church’s teaching on marriage if he says something like that. He thinks marriage is about the emotional “feelings”

Fr Rocky??? They’re upset over Fr. Rocky? Seriously?? I notice that don’t don’t say what was offensive. Fr. Rocky is a faithful and loving priest. I think this is just another example of too many kids (and parents) not understanding the teachings of the church. Fr. Rocky does use a lot of humor in his talks, perhaps they just didn’t “get it?”🤷

“outside the mainstream of Catholic teaching?” does that mean outside of the catechism??

Thankfully, that one was RECORDED!
With that, they may still decide not to air it.
I heard some of his talks and they range in topics because his is Q&A, difficult in my opinion. But, I can’t see him straying from the teaching. It might could have been answered better but heck, how many can, on their feet, do a good job at Q&A (other than Catholic Answer people and such)?
We may never know other than it was resolved.

An interesting article. Thanks for the link.

All I can say about the matter is that I’ve listened to the entire series of her talks here and found nothing whatever objectionable in them. I doubt that she suddenly changed in this one talk.
Actually, in the linked article someone posted here, the chaplain himself said that he was shocked when she spent 15 minutes going into sociology he had never heard her use before. So it’s somewhat irrelevant what her previous engagements said when the chaplain himself said she changed it for the assembly 🤷.
