I do not know of any who had those desires who didn’t act on them
Perhaps that’s because you’re not a psychiatrist/psychologist/sexologist/other kind of therapist who specializes on the matter, and hence not someone such a person would go to?

The fact that you don’t see them mentioned in the media does not mean they don’t exist. It doesn’t even mean they’re not in the majority; it simply means they’re not too keen on having their face on the front page.

Ask virtually any priest or (specialized) mental health care worker about this, and they will tell you the number of celibate pedophiles outnumber the amount of child abusers, in addition to the fact that most child abusers are not pedophiles. The first observation comes from clinical practice (and care for souls), the second from diagnosis of (and also here, pastoral care for) criminal offenders. I have heard these observations stated by priests, as well as in the interview I mentioned.

Edit:
Also, comparing them to psychopaths is accurate in my book because both have zero rehabilitation.
This is actually not true - I also recently read that the vast majority of sexual offenders (including child abusers) where I live do not end up as repeat offenders; rehabilitation with the aim to prevent future acts of abuse works. In the case of “true” pedophiles, the attraction will obviously not stop, but even then, the majority of offenders do not repeat their abuse after being released. So in the sense of the word “rehabilitation” generally used by the courts (as in, prevent future offenses), the rehabilitation rate is closer to 100% than zero.

However, the US are not exactly famous for their rehabilitation of criminals; they’re rather completely infamous for their unwillingness to even try. Which I guess changes the statistics.

I do not know of any who had those desires who didn’t act on them - those in the pedophilia group which are very very small but the number of victims are very very high.
Just like Rin said, I would be puzzled as to when you would ever hear about this group of people. Even churches wouldn’t touch the issue with a ten-foot pole – can you imagine an archdiocese offering a group to support those who have an unwanted attraction to children?

It seems to me that the internet has been instrumental in making attraction to children more common – just as it has made every other perversity more common. But I don’t think people who develop an attraction to children online are particularly likely to abuse children – but then again, what do I know? We need actual research on the topic. It’s complicated to get such research, but it’s certainly worth it, since it will help us know how to protect children and treat adults with dignity.
Also, comparing them to psychopaths is accurate in my book because both have zero rehabilitation.
I imagine this might differ based on the case. I have a hard time believing that a person who has inappropriately touched one child, once, is incapable of rehabilitation.

We know because of the priests who went off to be treated for pedophilia and came back and became repeat offenders.
But yes, it would be odd if they advertised it.
The suggestion of the island for pedophiles was repeated as a good idea by a psychiatrist who treats pedophiles. It would be interesting if he treats anyone with just temptations, or if he would consider those with temptations pedophiles.

I think how they define pedophilia if different than just one touch. And my understanding is the the catch and release, that the law enforcement does with either telling them they have to register or wear an ankle bracelet isn’t working too well. But that is their solution to overcrowding in prisons/jails.

We know because of the priests who went off to be treated for pedophilia and came back and became repeat offenders.
As I’ve said over and over, testing the outcomes of a population that has already offended is very different from testing the outcomes of people who are merely tempted to offend. So again, we know nothing about this latter group, composed of those who are tempted.
I think how they define pedophilia if different than just one touch.
Pedophilia is scientifically defined by attraction, not action. But my point was that, if a person acts on his pedophilia once, in a small (but very serious and damaging) way, it seems pretty clear that he can be rehabilitated.

Happy Easter!
I guess I don’t quite understand why someone would in any form or fashion support Savage because in my book he is similar to WBC. He is violent, with words, against Christians who hold that the acts are wrong and marriage is between a man and woman. He has set them up as bigots.
What you have said would be similar if I took something from the late Fred Phelps, a programs that might agree with a doctrine we have, and use it.
Or, that is how it is in my book.
I couldn’t support WBC for many reasons no matter if they get some things right.
I don’t know if I’d compare the two. No matter how Dan Savage can be (and his treatment of Rick Santorum was pretty bad), there’s still a difference between saying vile things and going to the funeral of soldiers and other, completely unrelated people and picketing, chanting said vile comments. If he went to Rick Santorum’s house and held a picket, I’d agree with the comparison. I think Savage is better than the WBC for sure.

I have more to say on the topic, but Mass is calling my name at the moment. Happy Easter to you as well! 🙂

As to the research, and assuming it may be some of what Sr used, the reason they went out of the country was to get a larger group to research, in a place that had ss’m’ for awhile.
The Church will always witness to a marriage being between a man and a woman. They strongly believe that a mother and father are important in a child’s life. This is being erased and done away with, quickly. We were told a lie by the psychological association that divorce didn’t have an impact, negative, on the children. That as long as the parents were happy, the children would be. We know that is a lie but it is similar to what is being sold here in the US - mother/father are optional.
Now, the Church is going to keep studying this because that is part of what she does. She knows the family life, or demise of it, effects a lot of things - collapse in societies even.
So, it is not unusual for them the underscore a point with data/stats. A lot of youth, and older, want you to “Prove IT”, it being a negative impact on person, etc.
Those are some reasons behind using the stats. It isn’t going out to find something wrong with anyone. It also tells them if what they knew to be true, marriage and family life - importance of healthy one, is reflected in the studies. IOW, they aren’t picking on one group - or two. They would do similar things if speaking of poverty, crime, abortion, etc.
I think that is a good comparison, also Fred Phelps, Democrat, Dan Savage may well be Democrat, both are hateful. Savage has said some very despicable things, not just in regards to Santorum but others and I won’t give his depraved statements any extra attention.

It does make you wonder about these sexual inclinations, comparing same-sex attractions to other attractions out there.

I would like to ask for your prayers for Sister Jane Dominic Laurel, O.P, a Dominican Sister of St. Cecilia Congregation.

catholicnewsherald.com/53-news/roknewspager-local/5264-charlotte-catholic-speaker-sparks-student-petition

Sister Jane Dominic is my professor this semester for Sacred Scripture. She is solid and very knowledgeable, her area of specialization being Dogmatic Theology. She also gives lectures around the country on the topic of Masculinity and Femininity. I attended this lecture when it was offered at our College, which was given in early January of this year, and it is very informative, rooted in Catholic teaching and supported by sociological data.

I told Sister after I found out yesterday that she has my support and encouragement.
I know that she would be much grateful for prayers. I also know that she would not like the news to spread around the College (I think this means the student body) lest something similar be sparked. Not among the faculty or staff – ours is a sold Catholic school. But we do have a substantial non-Catholic body that could stir trouble if they were to find out about what others students have done. She recognizes that the news might get to the College inevitably, but I know she would appreciate that those who already know not by their own initiative spread the news around the school , so I will not.

So to ask for prayers, I come here. She is doing the right thing! We need speakers like her, and the fact that a student body at Catholic school would petition against her is indicative of the possibility of bad formation in Catholic teaching being received by the students.

I for one, will be sending a message to that Charlotte Catholic High School in support for Sister, since they have received many emails in opposition to her.

My gut feelling regarding most supposed Catholic High Schools is questionable…sorry to be so cynical…I pray I am wrong…there are Catholic High Schools and there are Catholic High Schools…the school, regardless should support this brave Sister…and if they don’t we’re in a great deal more trouble than I think regarding this social wave of support from the entire nation on this homosexual agenda…poor Catechesis not withstanding …case in point…young people at the Pro life March in D.C. a few months ago…where High School students even from my home town attended…well meaning young people…when questions what there thoughts were on artificial contraception (of course for not medical reasons)…purely contraceptive…the majority questioned commented that they felt it was o.k. …didn’t mean to jump track…God Bless this Nun and I pray the school supports her…High School students protesting anything at a private school should be ignored…their parents pay to send them there for a good education…they should know that it is Catholic…if they are not happy, then they should go elsewhere…I am going to look up Sr. Jane and if possible send her an atta girl…PAX

Agreed.

I think pretty much all sin works this way. Thieves justify their own thievery by saying that they’re already beyond help, so they might as well continue. My own take on this is that we should just about never try to convince strangers of their own guilt, since that just pushes them further into such rationalizations. But when we are close to a person, we can express to them the severity of their sin without rejecting them – instead, we offer unconditional acceptance and love, but beg them to stop hurting themselves and others.
Actually the falling and having trouble getting up is also an issue with AA because of them thinking it is worse than it is turning a weekend long bender into a month. I’ve seen gay people struggling to be chaste wind up with a series on one night stands which due to indoctrination was perceived as less bad than a long term relationship.

I know we are off topic, but if the chance is provided to ask this dr who treats them these questions (esp those he treats if he still recommends the island as before, and to clarify what he said, alluded, those acting out vs if he has treated any with just the inclination/desire) I will ask it.

He, Savage, has a large following and platform to do the damage that is similar to the picketing, in my book.
The way he treats Christians, who adhere to the commandments and not some new interpretation that wipes out any and all sin including homosexual acts, is abominable. I am glad he was called out on one, being a bully to a kid no less. But his being called out and challenged is far and few between. For some, I think it is a sensitivity that they don’t want to offend any one with this type of inclination - sort of like they are victims. But, even if he were, or anyone for that matter, you don’t get to act poorly and hide under the banner of victim to justify your behavior. No group should do that.

The stats Sr used? The stats may be off, or may be right, the fact that our actions have an impact (positive or negative) on ourselves, others, children and society would not be wrong.

I am listening to her talks when I can. I haven’t come across any about masturbation yet, which is the one I was curious about.
Masturbation is wrong because it causes us to become selfish, turn inward, and perverts the use of our bodies to give/receive which could result in new life.
I am interested to see what she said about that and the stats she used.

But in general, she isn’t wrong about the acts nor about divorce and the negative impact it has on the family (kids) and society as a whole.

Honestly, I just think he’s ignored. How many people give Pat Robertson the time of day, despite him making all sorts of hateful comments towards gays (including blaming them for 9/11)? When people are rude towards or ignorant enough of the groups they discuss, most people just ignore them, in order to marginalize them better. I suspect the same is true with Dan Savage.

Actually the falling and having trouble getting up is also an issue with AA because of them thinking it is worse than it is turning a weekend long bender into a month.** I’ve seen gay people struggling to be chaste wind up with a series on one night stands which due to indoctrination was perceived as less bad than a long term relationship.**
I’m not sure I follow your point here. As for the bolded portion, I’m not sure I disagree with the “indoctrination”. If a person is truly committed to the Christian worldview, then entering into a long-term same-sex sexual relationship involves playing with another person’s heart and treating that other person with very little dignity. Just imagine living life knowing that your significant other considers you a permanent source of sin in his/her life. 😦

If someone has numbed their conscience as to the immorality of sodomy and masturbation, however, it’s clear that a stable gay relationship is much less harmful than promiscuity. So I guess it matters what kind of harm we’re talking about. Promiscuity involves a different kind of harms than a relationship, but promiscuity doesn’t involve the sort of emotional collateral damage that a relationship (usually) does.

Also, in regards to Dan Savage, he does not represent any remotely sizable bloc in the gay community. He has been barred by the LGBT community (!!!) at my alumni undergraduate campus from coming back due to anti-Catholic jokes (!!!) he made while giving a speech there. I’d really question, personally, whether you’d trust him over the actual community when discussing the community’s sexual lives. I personally don’t give the time of day to sexual activists like him who don’t represent the LGBT community in any form whatsoever, though I do appreciate his “It Gets Better” project.
If Dan Savage does not speak for you and others, have you made efforts in expressing that to LGB sites as you seem to be doing in correcting so called misimpression here at CAF. Further, as I have stated before, you send a confusing message, for instance in your support of Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better,” the program he launched to supposedly stem teen suicide. While that may be the short term goal, you know that DS is promoting embrace of homosexuality by conflicted teens with same sex attraction. You only need to read a small sample of DS’s advice and writings, and hear him in one speech (he keeps getting invited in LGB circles and featured by gay friendly media). Sure, as they listen to his shameless idolatry of gay sex, the only way to handle homosexual feelings and any associated conflict with the inclination is to act on it. He unabashedly said to Bill Maher and other guests that he will keep on “inseminating his husband,” with whom he brags he has been for twenty years in a “monogamish” relationship, touting the “virtue” of his / their agreed upon infidelity. At the same time proudly saying he and his husband are raising a son they have adopted sixteen years ago. His utter disrespect and hatred of Christianity, Catholicism and the Pope as regards the proscription of active homosexuality and position against gay “marriage” and parenting are not in dispute. How do you reconcile all of these?
“Monogamish” is not a real thing in the LGBT community. It has been made up by activists who want to eliminate social structures, and who do not represent gays and lesbians in any fashion. The vast, vast majority of gay men and lesbians expect strict monogamy from their partners, with no outside physicality whatsoever.
Another claim that you expect readers to believe on the basis of your polling of your gay and lesbian friends? The circle of friends that you said elsewhere who are all active, gay “marriage” supporting homosexuals except you?

I’m not talking about a sexual relationship, I’m talking about a long and deep relationship. If one has been convinced that their sexuality is bad it means that all relationships that are connected to it even if not sexual are bad too.

Well, that’s silly that people would find the need to judge about such a relationship. I certainly think that going into this kind of relationship – especially if it involves cohabitation – should be accompanied by good counsel and discernment, ideally help from a spiritual director. But it’s nobody else’s place to sit in judgment over people pursuing chaste relationships.

Another claim that you expect readers to believe on the basis of your polling of your gay and lesbian friends? The circle of friends that you said elsewhere who are all active, gay “marriage” supporting homosexuals except you?
,
It’s not just my circle of LGB friends. It’s also on the basis of the many, many people I’ve met throughout gay festivals, gay support groups, on dates [before I was Catholic], etc. It’s further buffered by the experiences of my poly friends, who endlessly complained to me that they couldn’t find anyone who would date them for any length of time, because everyone was so “uptight” about monogamy in the LGBT community.
Further, as I have stated before, you send a confusing message, for instance in your support of Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better,” the program he launched to supposedly stem teen suicide. Because the “It Gets Better” project, albeit started by him, is not run by him. Anyone who has a Youtube account (or any other social media service) can upload an “It Gets Better” video with whatever message they want to send, as long as it is anti-suicide, of course. I do not support Dan Savage, but I do support the project as it is community-based, not Dan Savage-based.
If Dan Savage does not speak for you and others, have you made efforts in expressing that to LGB sites as you seem to be doing in correcting so called misimpression here at CAF.
Well, this answer is going to be rather long-winded. Contrary to public ideas of the gay community, it is not one, solid community. It is really two communities (gay men and lesbians, with bisexuals flocking wherever they feel most comfortable, usually with their own gender). The reason for this is because, unlike straight people, there really is no pressing reason for genders to mix. And with the low degree of shared interests between the gay male community and the lesbian community, you don’t really see a lot of intermixing outside of support groups, festivals, or other big Pride events.

So, this may seem like it’s irrelevant to Dan Savage, but it’s not. Lesbians tend to only really care about lesbian speakers in the community, not gay male speakers, and I’d imagine (though I have literally no idea) that gay men don’t care at all about lesbian speakers. I don’t mean to say we are rude to them or anything, we just don’t exactly have much interest, as we don’t get gay men. Lesbians are naturally going to care more about Naya Rivera, Ellen Page, and Ellen DeGeneres than any gay male idol, even one like Neil Patrick Harris. Anyways, my point is, if I went onto a lesbian website and talked about Dan Savage being an idiot, people would be like “Who cares? I don’t pay attention to him anyway.” And I’m not exactly expected on a gay male site anymore than a gay man would be on a lesbian site, so any comments I made on a gay male site would seem like proselytizing, and thus would be countereffective.

What I am saying is that it is possible gay men enjoy reading Savage’s articles (although I find the majority of his readership/attendees are actually straight women, especially if you watch his Youtube videos…). I wouldn’t know how gay men enjoy spending their time, as a lesbian. However, his comments about “monogamish” relationships in the gay community are completely unsubstantiated. For the first part, that has not, would not, and will not ever be a thing in the lesbian community. And from my experience with the roommates of my gay male friends (of which I’ve known quite a substantial number), while they have a relatively high amount of sex with their boyfriends, there isn’t any form of outside arrangement. Either way, it doesn’t make any sense to associate Savage with the majority of a community that is made up of more lesbians than gay men in the first place, let alone taking into account the fact that he is a sexual activist that has reason to make things look more sexually “free” and “open” in the community than they are.

I suppose I could try to convince gay people to be more vocal in their opposition to him, as opposed to certain, under-the-radar opposition (like my university’s LGBT group’s blacklisting of him for anti-Catholic remarks), but the main problem is the same problem I find in trying to convince Catholics to oppose radical fundamentalists’ hate speech. People are so convinced that this is a zero sum war that they refuse to publicly decry any person deemed to be a potential ally, no matter how egregious their conduct. And this for sure happens on both sides of the marriage debate. Gay people are more content quietly ignoring him than giving the “opposition” a talking point that there’s huge discordance in the community.
