Dominican Sisters of Mary to appear on Oprah

On Tuesday February 9 the Dominican Sisters Mary, Mother of Eucharist, are going to be on Oprah. The sisters were contacted late last week and this past week we have been praying that the show will be a positive portrayal of religious life. Sister Mary Samuel was on the set this past Thursday and was very pleased with the taping. After the taping Sister MS had a chance to give Oprah a rosary and took the opportunity to show her how to pray it!!!

The scheduled showing for this is Oct 9

If you are unaware of these sisters, this is one of those orders that is faithful to the Magisterium and is bursting at the seams with vocations.

I too hope the portrayal is positive.

I’ll bet the question from Oprah will go something like this:

So why would you young and well educated women, choose a life which to many in our modern post-women’s lib age seems very limiting, and to some even medieval or backward?

I think I’ll let the Sisters reply to that…😉

Or something to do with, “How can you possibly be willing keep yourselves chaste throughout your lives? How do you do it?” :rolleyes:
 
Why can’t folks wait and see if the talk-show host is respectful of the nuns’ decision and asks meaningful questions? I think she is being pre-judged here.

I think she conducted an appropriate interview of Sarah Palin, didn’t she? So why the preliminary attacks?

I agree. I think she’ll do fine…unless she asks the nuns if their vows of celibacy are “a realistic position” to take. 😉
 
I agree, we shouldn’t pre-judge…however, experience has given us some insight into the media’s view on the Catholic Church.

A ‘Real-Life Nunnery?’ As opposed to what? A fake one?

Those aren’t necessarily attack questions (the ones above). They are the kinds of questions your typical American would want to ask a young nun like that if they weren’t too shy to say it. The fact is that faithful catholics willing to give up their lives in the service to Christ ARE weird. No reason to hide it! Taken the right way, ANY of those questions are excellent opportunities to proclaim the gospel.

Just noticed the date. How did it actually go? Anybody watch?
 
These nuns pop in to our parish frequently for daily mass…They are really a beautiful bunch of young women…It makes me swell with pride when I see them about town
 
I was actually very pleased with the show. It doesn’t make fun of religious or put a negative light on them. In fact, it shows them in a positive light, which can be tough to do on a secular show of today.

I saw that show, even though I’ve stopped watching Oprah for the last couple of years once I learned that she’s VERY New Age, and doesn’t believe that there even IS a “God.”

Except, she sometimes will ask her audience whether they know who they REALLY are.

She’s saying that everybody IS God. That there is no deity, at all, other than each person.

I think Oprah did well, not dissing the Sisters. And not interrupting them.

The Sisters did very, very well. VERY well. So calm. And quietly joyful. A true witness to how we are each called to follow Christ.
 
I just watched this and I can’t stop smiling. What an incredibly inspiring and beautiful group of women. 👍

Just gently saying, Oprah really should do more research. Both nuns and geisha are celibate, but for different reasons. Nuns are celibate for the glory of God, Geisha are celibate for the glory of the arts they learn. There is one important difference between them, however.

Nuns marry Jesus, known as Permanent/Solemn Profession and get a wedding band. Some Geisha may eventually choose a patron (danna) to whom they have the freedom to have bed relations with if they choose, but its more of a money and companionship thing.

But I do think I know what she means by “real-life nunnery”. She’s referring to an actual convent, not one of the reality-show ones. That’s my best guess on the context. So is she leaving the episode online for watching? I hope so. They’re a nice Order to rejoice in. It seems most Orders put their videos online rather than televise it.

Yay, links. They’re awfully quiet though. It might help if you got the videos subbed/captioned. I don’t remember if I’m able to sub them on Youtube or if it requires the author to do so. The program was excellent. Yay for no trash.

I heard Mother Assumpta Long give a talk.must be twenty years ago–she has not changed a bit,her lively and intelligence shine through–also her love of Jesus through her Consecration to God in the religeous life.A few days later I even helped her dry up dishes–so she is well grounded.
God Bless all the Dominican Sisters and in fact all religeous who give their lives to God.

Let us hope and pray that Opra will one day receive the light of faith.(was not that interviewer a beautiful and sweet person?)
