Domino’s Pizza founder pours millions for new Catholic university

Pizza magnate Thomas S. Monaghan, founder of Domino’s Pizza, has pledged more than $250 million to construct Ave Maria University and a surrounding town by the same name where planners expect to attract 20,000 residents

Officials say the institution, which is not tied to any religious order or diocese, will offer an alternative to some more secular Catholic colleges and universities.

“There are a lot of Catholic universities that have lost their mission in the spread of the faith,” said Gov. Jeb Bush, who spoke at the event. “This university is grounded in the Catholic doctrine.”

Me too - Papa John’s, move over!

Jeb Bush just moved up a notch too. Don’t know much about his orthodoxy or politics, , but it sounds good so far. Hmmm, this year 5 Catholics on the Supreme court, maybe Jeb as a Catholic President at some point in time…think he has considered it?
 
👍 Tom has done many wonderful things here in Michigan between his Catholic schools and Thomas More Law firm.
He has made great strides to help improve Catholic schools.
 
Fr. Joseph Fessio, S.J., is the provost of Ave Maria University. That’s a plus.

In May 2004 Tom. Monaghan, gave a speech at a conference on business ethics, where he said: “We’ll own all commercial real estate,” Mr. Monaghan declared, describing his vision. “That means we will be able to control what goes on there. You won’t be able to buy a Playboy or Hustler magazine in Ave Maria Town. We’re going to control the cable television that comes in the area. There is not going to be any pornographic television in Ave Maria Town. If you go to the drug store and you want to buy the pill or the condoms or contraception, you won’t be able to get that in Ave Maria Town.”

Sounds like a community I would love to be a part of and bring up my kids in.

Prof Charles Rice has already critiqued the illegalities of what TM wants to do. Money won’t let him do everything he wants.
 
Domino’s Pizza is always good but I’ll never forget that very delicious pie from a Domino’s in Gloucester, MA that one cold dark autumn night.

A minor point: although Thomas Monaghan founded Domino’s and became very wealthy as result, he has been out of the pizza business for a few years and the company has tried to distance itself from him.
Monaghan is no longer involved with the running of the corporation, nor does he have a controlling interest. In the past Domino’s has come under fire from some liberal groups because of Monaghan’s support of conservative and pro-life religious and political organizations (such as Operation Rescue) and activities.

This college and the concept town is located in the paradise of Naples, FL.
 
I love Domino’s. Especially the bacon cheddar cheeseburger pizza. Get the door. It’s Domino’s.

You may have to be from Michigan to know the whole story. But as Mr. S said if you want to know pm him.

We lived in the Ann Arbor/Detroit area for 5 years. So what’s the rest of the story? If you’ve got a beef, post it instead of being so evasive.

I would love to have a Dominos Pizza right now :rolleyes: Maybe when we get stateside again…

“Owning” a town has already been completed several times in FL. My parents live in a retirement community in FL that is HUGE. They own everything in the town - hospitals, firestations, stores, recreation centers, newspapers, garbage collection, etc - and it is awesome. I’m sure since Ave Maria will be in FL that they already have looked to The Villages for insight on how to accomplish this.

Not me…I still won’t buy it- I can’t stand it- though I admire their contribution to Catholic Education.

If someone is actually interested in taking 5-10 minutes to read some of the articles, they would see how much stress has been heaped on lots of good people - students, teachers etc…

I don’t know if this post will avoid elimination - but it is factual and actually quite charitable to those who are caught up in the world of big business.

It might also make one really admire how much that “little nun in Alabama” has done with no money of her own:thumbsup:
