Widely shared quotes in which Francis calls for a merger of Christianity and Islam are ‘invented’, says spokesman
A widely shared story that claimed Pope Francis called for merging Islam and Christianity is false.
The story quotes Francis as telling a Vatican audience: “Jesus Christ, Mohammed, Jehovah, Allah. These are all names employed to describe an entity that is distinctly the same across the world. For centuries, blood has been needlessly shed because of the desire to segregate our faiths.”

Who falls for this stuff? It should be obvious when they state that Mohammad and Allah are the same entity. It doesn’t take an expert in Islam to know that Mohammad is a prophet and Allah is God. I’m positive that Pope Francis knows the distinction.

Lol the pope is actually on many points more conservative than most catholics.

Who falls for it? Quite a LOT of protestants. I’ve seen these quotes multiple times over the past few years used in arguments. They believe it because of mostly confirmation bias, combined with pictures of the Pope holding a communist sickle crucifix.

I have refuted these things several times, pointing out it is fake. I have no idea if they believe me or not.

Also, it would be wise for the Vatican press office to respond just a BIT faster on these things. Those fake quotes have been out there for YEARS! It would help to prove these are fake if there are news articles noting they are fake, which would pop up on internet searches when you searched for the quote.

Protestants who think that the Catholic Church invented Islam.

PLENTY of people fall for it.

This article is great but it wont change anything, Im assuming most Catholics probably already can spot one of these fake stories, but its the non catholics and non religious people its aimed it, they see it and automatically believe it…damage is done, even though its not true.

I saw a story like this awhile back on my FB feed, one of my friends had shard a fake pope quote, him saying mass was no longer required, I could easily tell it was fake but I saw that 1000s of people had liked and shared it, by reading the comments, I could see most believed the pope had said this and were happy the church was ‘coming around’.

The vatican needs to be more aggressive about stopping this kind of thing.

“Falling” for it is not always the issue. It’s when one takes these things out of context to force-feed a certain world-view to ease troubled consciences in the wrong direction.

So who/what is the reliable source where one can go to find out if something he said/did is true. Does the Vatican document everything he says and dose is there a way to check with the Vatican?

Who falls for this stuff?
People who have a pre-existing hate for the Catholic Church and the Pope. People tend to believe what they hear when it confirms their already held beliefs or points of view. It called confirmation bias or some similar sounding name.

I just had a friend today tel me that Rick Warren is promoting something called Chrislam.
I hope the Vatican will publish and correct these misquotes because many people believe whatever they read or see on the internet
