Don’t forget your easy Plenary Indulgence for New Year’s Eve...and another for New Year’s Day

Today, Dec. 31 (New Year’s Eve) you can get a quick plenary indulgence under the usual conditions for devoutly publicly reciting* the Te Deum.

Edited to add, Links have been fixed to point to the Archived pages of the prayer site because the site apparently went down or blocked from all the traffic of people trying to access the prayer today.

And another plenary indulgence tomorrow on January 1, New Years Day, for publicly reciting the Veni Creator.

*I note that the words “Publicly recite” were replaced in the 1999 Manual with “Devoutly assist” which suggests that if a choir happens to be singing the prayer or choristers are chanting it, you can just follow along and get the same benefits, but there’s also nothing to prevent you from just saying it out loud yourself in church or another public place. In the past I have used the public sidewalk to get this type of indulgence if I couldn’t get to church.

The usual conditions are, as always:
  • Be in a state of grace
  • Have no attachment to sin, even venial sin (Note that this just means you sincerely intend to avoid all sin, even small sin)
  • Confession within 20 days before or after saying the prayer (one confession can cover both indulgences)
  • Receive Holy Communion once for each indulgence (preferably on the day of the indulgence, but can be within a few days)
  • Pray for the intentions of the Holy Father once for each indulgence (preferably on the day of the indulgence, but can be within a few days).
You can keep the indulgence for yourself or give it to a Holy Soul in Purgatory so they can maybe have a great New Year starting off in Heaven, if God wills of course.

can a plenary indulgence be obtainable if someone knows they arent in the state of Grace but instead of trying to do it for themselves they offer the Te Deum for the souls in purgatory?

You have to be in the state of grace to get an indulgence, even if you’re giving it to another soul.

But you can always say a sincere prayer for the soul in purgatory, and the Lord will certainly accept that whether you’re in a state of grace or not.

Also, you can get a plenary indulgence any day of the year - so when you get back in the state of grace you can earn one on that day by one of the methods valid any day of the year, such as devoutly reading Scripture for a half hour, or saying a five-decade rosary out loud with a group or in a church, or making the Stations of the Cross at approved stations (there’s a bunch of instructions in the manual for what’s an “approved station” and how you say it), or going to Adoration for a half hour.

Since it usually takes about a half hour to earn a plenary, these quick ones where you get to just say a short prayer on certain days are like little gifts and save you some time.

Somehow, when I saw the words “plenary indulgence” on the title line, I just knew it had to be you, TBS. Thanks so much. 😇

I did not know this. Since I will be at Mass anyway, I’ll make it a top priority to remember this. There could be no better way to start out the new year than to attempt to be free of the debt of temporal punishment for my massive inventory of sins.

Thanks again.

I fixed the links to the prayers in the first post to point to Internet Archive, as it appears so many people were accessing Our Catholic Prayers website, probably to say the Te Deum today, that the site went down. Either that or they forgot to pay their hosting bill. Anyway, the links work again now.

One thing I’ve never been quite clear on regarding praying for the Pope’s intentions - is it sufficient to offer up an Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be for his intentions generally or do we need to pray for the specific intentions for the month.

You can just pray generically “For the Holy Father’s Intentions”. It is not necessary to look up and determine what the specific monthly intention is on the Pope’s calendar. You can if you want but you don’t have to even know what it is. I’m pretty sure before the days of the Internet, people might not have had easy access to even knowing.

Also, the Pope may be praying for additional things known only to himself, and in addition there are four general intentions (the progress of the Faith, peace and unity among Christians, the conversion of sinners, and against heresy) that are always considered to be “the Holy Father’s intentions” even if the Holy See is vacant and even if there’s no specific intention on the monthly calendar. Your prayer “For the Holy Father’s Intentions” would automatically cover all of these as well, without you needing to name them all off or even know what they are.
