Thoughts on this?
People are fired everyday for far less…its a part of being a laborer. He’ll find another job, or retire…the fortunate thing for him is his age. He may like to work, but odds are good he doesn’t have to work.

Wish him well, but not making any excuses for him or his employer.

Cherry found out the hard way that in the hierarchy of victimhood, immigrants rank far, far, far higher than veterans.

The question is, what took them so long?

This guy has no filter between his mouth and brain.

Some veterans are immigrants.

These are not mutually exclusive groups.

Kinda reminds me of Catholic football fans faced with the dilemma of Notre Dame vs Boston College…who’s team does God favor? LOL

Cherry found out
… that begging the question of immigrants patriotism and appreciation of veterans is bigotry and thing that embarrasses your employers and the sponsors and rightfully gets you fired.

Lots of people didn’t wear poppies on Veteran’s Day. And they weren’t all immigrants. A lot of people don’t know about it. And some of us didn’t get out of the house to buy one in time.

In some places, poppies are distributed free, but a good point nonetheless.

I never even heard of this poppy business until this Veterans Day. And my family has been in the U.S. since the 1880’s at least.

I think this wearing of poppies in remembrance of the fallen soldiers is not observed in the US but it is a custom in the UK. I may be wrong. It is worn during Remembrance Day.

From this thread they also do it in Canada.

Don Cherry is Canadian and is a hockey commentator.

His comments were stupid. Are new immigrants supposed to be psychic? Poppy wearing isn’t a practice seen in most parts of the world. A practice done for about 2 out of 52 weeks of the year. Just two countries with 90 million out of 7,500,000,000 people in the world do it. And a significant number of Canadians and Brits don’t wear them, immigrant or not. Instead of wrongly blaming new immigrants, blame the federal government for failing veterans for the last decade or so.

His firing was excessive. He claims he wanted to apologize but wasn’t given the chance or something like that.

I don’t really care much about hockey. Or pro sports that much so I didn’t commit blasphemy there. Canadian “news”. No wonder I go to the BBC first for my daily toxic dose of news rather than anything closer to home.

It is a custom because of a poem by a Canadian world war I medic. The poppy designs are different in the two countries (Wikipedia):

Here’s the poem, by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I buy one whenever I see them on sale. At the Commissary entrance, for example. In front of Wal-Mart. At the Mall.

Wherever.
