VATICAN CITY (CNS) – The way Christians behave can either help and inspire others, or turn them away from ever following Jesus, Pope Francis said.

“How many times we’ve heard in our neighborhoods, ‘Oh that person over there always goes to church, but he badmouths everyone, skins them alive.’ What a bad example to badmouth other people. This is not Christian,” the pope said at his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square Oct. 29.

So true. I have noticed whenever there is an article on the internet news sites about the Catholic Church, for instance, the comments from “Christians” are far, far worse than the comments from atheists. No wonder many agnostics say “Anything but Christianity!”

Boy, isn’t that the truth. The boards here are FULL of people that feel this way. They figure, why should I try, when everyone fails?
It’s a great disservice to the Lord when we fail to take our personal salvation seriously…for others are watching, especially young people. Thanks for posting this!

I can’t argue your experience, but atheist comments are the most foul on the planet, next to those by Raider fans.

Atheist comments can be foul, yes. I have found, though, that most atheist comments are just plain stupid and clueless. The real humdingers have been from Christians when ripping apart Catholics on news sites. I get angrier at them because I figure they should know better. The atheists are just lost, and to me, pathetic and worthy of prayers.

Nothwithstanding the truth of such comments, I’m sure Francis realised, when making those remarks, that it is the *Church hierarchy * not the laity which has the highest profile in the public eye.

Whenever I would complain about people who went to church but acted in what I considered unchristian ways, my mother always pointed out three things. 1. We believe, worship and follow Jesus, not other parishioners, priests, or even the pope. 2. They might be even worse if they didn’t come to church. 3. I should worry about my own sins and let God take care of the rest.

I find in troubling times the calmest approach is to keep one’s eyes on Jesus.
 
Oh I agree, because whenever a person who calls himself Christian, people start saying, you see what religion does. We need to use the name right, be followers of Christ.
 
The problem is that we all fall short of the Kingdom of God, whether we are Christian, atheist, or otherwise.

It frustrates me that Christians (including myself) do no live what Jesus taught. It is impossible to live the standard that Jesus expects from us. Yet we have the comfort of the Holy Spirit to guide us in life.

How does one express this message of hope with the understanding that we will fall many times in the process? The answer is so easy as all we need to do is love our neighbor as ourself and love God with all our heart, mind, and strength. And when (not if) we fail to do so, we have the forgiveness of our Lord Jesus Christ waiting there for us. No other faith can claim such.

We all need to be sincere in our recognition that we all sin and in need of constant renewal of ourselves in this walk in life we take with Christ.
