My wife bought us and my daughter tickets to a kids’ concert at the Harris Theatre at Millennium Park for 12:30pm, the same time I attend the TLM at Holy Angels in Aurora, IL.

I investigated times around Chicago and Our Lady Immaculate in Oak Park offers a 10am Mass. That’s my best bet.

I have gone to every Latin Mass in Aurora since it was offered and I refuse to miss a Sunday. Unfortunately, I have been spoiled and I refuse to attend a Novus Ordo. I don’t want to return to the same rut I was in. The Latin Mass breathed new life into my faith.

I know people here frown on SSPX but I am making a big mistake if I go to just one Mass?

Just go to Mass and fulfill your Sunday obligation, receive Jesus, and stop making such a fuss over it. SSPX is a vaid Mass in most cases.

“Refusing to miss a Sunday” – I’m sorry, but you have no option to miss a Sunday. Refusing to attend the Novus Ordo Mass, if it keeps you from fulfilling your Sunday obligation, is a very serious issue you need to get over. It is a valid Mass, whether you like it or not.

I’m not sure what you are looking for here, a pat on the back for going to Mass? 🤷

As a Latin Mass lover and attendee myself, I would encourage you to attend a Novus Ordo Mass in a church in communion with the Vatican when you are unable to attend the TLM in a Roman Catholic church that is in communion with the Vatican … When circumstances do not permit me to attend Latin Mass downtown, I go to a reverent Novus Ordo. Surely one exists in your vicinity?

The Vatican has never said that the SSPX Mass meets the Sunday obligation for all people. It only said this for one specific person in one specific circumstance. One may attend but there’s a question as to whether or not it fulfills the Sunday obligation unless you have the same situation as the one who made the inquiry to the Vatican and then it probably that it does. That said, since we don’t know who made the original query or what the original query was, we can’t know for sure. We can only place our bets and hope it’s right. Going to an SSPX Mass out of attachment for the EF is fine. My position is that it hasn’t been said to fulfill the Sunday obligation. There’s a whole lot of speculation going on but no proof. And, I’m sure you’re about to receive a link to the Msgr. Perl letter. Hopefully, you’ll get the Una Voce link where Msgr. Perl point out his response was to a specific person in a specific circumstance.

We’re not supposed to comment on the SSPX here but I hear a lot about that Holy Angels Mass in Aurora. How is that? They just started it didn’t they, after the TLM (ICRSS) failed to make it at St. Mary’s?

It’s great! The Pastor there, Father Heinz, seems like an old school kind of priest and he’s the one who perform the Sacrifice of the Mass. He delivers some insightful and heavy homilies.

And the end of his letter states:
i. Our response to your questions may be made public.
If there was that much of a concern over his comments being applied to other situations, why would he have approved making them public?

And - is it going to damage the OP’s soul to attend ONE SSPX Mass? He’s not saying he’s planning on doing that forever and exclusively - that’s why I don’t get that this is any big deal.

Attending an SSPX Mass does NOT fulfill your Sunday obligation so if that’s the only Mass you would attend on the Sunday then you would be comitting a grave sin by not fulfilling your obligation.

The validity is what I am asking about. I can do without the sarcasm since this is important to me. I want to send a message to the diocese, and maybe Rome, that I want more TLMs offered. By supporting the Novus Ordo, everyone believes everything is fine and no one wants the TLM.

Why would you attend a Mass in Vietnamese if you have no intention of attending it again?

As for the specifics on validity, others with more knowledge than I will be better able to help you there.

As for sending a message to the diocese, and maybe Rome, that you want more TLMs offered, I would encourage you that while you attend the Novus Ordo for this one day when the kid’s concert is taking place, you can send Our Eucharistic Lord Jesus a message by making a sacrifice for Him of your very presence at the Novus Ordo and asking Him to provide more TLMs through Pope Benedict’s Motu Proprio. You can also unite yourself spiritually in a way with the Poor Souls in Purgatory who long for Heaven … pray for them to gain their hearts’ desire, and ask them in turn to pray for your heart’s desire that the Latin Mass flourish within the Roman Catholic Church.

As for your hypothetical Mass in Vietnamese, I would attend it in order to receive Holy Communion.

I said valid - not licit.

If you feel this strongly, contact your Bishop. He is obligated to ensure that there is a TLM available if the faithful desire it. Keep in mind though that if you are in a vast minority in your area this just may not happen.

Big deal is it is his preferred option when the other choice is attending a mass in the OF.

The rejection of the OF is bigger problem than attending an SSPX mass once.

Have you considered attending one of the 21 Eastern Catholic Churches in Communion with Rome? I think there are a few in the Chicago area. It sure beats going to a Novus Ordo Mass.

The poster did not speak of lack of TLM offerings but lack at a time that suited him - the SSPX mass fit his schedule with this other activity.

Perhaps I used the wrong word. I meant I have a strong preference for the TLM and will avoid the NO whenever possible. If I have to and I have no other choice, I will attend the NO.

Why do you think that the SSPX Mass is an acceptable choice over the OF?
