I love Chritmas traditions in CAF, As Chritmas approaches we are sure to find threads about how the Christmas Tree is condmend by Jeremiah as a pagan idol and we risk eternal damnation by puting it up AND that anyone who tells their Kids tthere is a Santa Claus are craven liars who risk destroying their childrens belief in Jesus when they find out the truth. Fortunately sanity will return on or about December,26. smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_15_61.gif smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_16_18.gif

Sanity? What’s that?

It seems to me that the evilness of lying (not telling the truth) about something goes out the window when people tell little kids about Santa Clause and how he is real and lives in the North Pole, etc etc. I don’t see why we should feed our kids lies because people think it’s one of the “joys” of Christmas for little kids. I say tell them the truth that Santa is just a myth, or better yet, tell them about the real St. Nick who lived back in the 4th century!

Am I being anal?
I wouldn’t say anal, but to the extent you believe in the concept (including the powers) of the God set forth in Catholic Scriptures, then you are being a bit hypocritical.

How do you know that Santa Claus is not real? Can you prove his nonexistence? Many of the stories associated with Santa Claus are much more believable than many of the fantastic stories in the Bible.

Liar! 😃 NORAD is tracking Santa’s progress in his sleigh as we speak. Hear no evil, speak no evil.

Once my kids figured it out I did not lie and I resent the people here who say we are liars. I told a story, a fairytale. To liken the fairytale of Santa Claus to the
In a child’s mind he might come to believe that since Santa Claus is connected to Christmas and isn’t real, and that Christmas is a holiday which was used to Christianize pagans, that everything else about the Christian religion is a fairytale as well. You need to know what you’re getting into.

I have no opinion either way as I am not yet a parent.

Well, I told my kids that Santa wasn’t real, but the younger ones don’t believe me!

We do celebrate St. Nicholas’s Day on December 6th!
Yes, and in some countries that is the traditional day to give presents, not Christmas day. Christmas day in America was really developed by Coca-Cola when they engineered the modern Santa Claus and retailers put them in malls to boost retail sales. In traditionally Catholic countries, gift giving is held on Dec. 6th.

I think the Church in America should do something similar to reclaim the day of Christmas from the retailers.

I guess that Santa has to make two trips around the world in December?

Well, I am into and out of it, being a young parent that is 😉 My youngest turns 18 on Dec 29th. FYI, they all believe deeply in their Faith and never ever thought Mama or Daddy “lied” to them. My kids are smarter then that, thank you.

I’m with Guardian. A lie is a lie is a lie. Period.

If we tell our children about Santa Claus, and then we tell them about Jesus, and then they discover that we’ve been lying to them about Santa Claus, what are they going to think about what we tell them about Jesus?

Good point. They may realize that they shouldn’t swallow every story that they hear without critically analyzing it. Then, the may realize that while Jesus was a significant historical figure, most of the mythical stories about him in the Bible are probably false. Then, they may see no greater reason to pray to a man that passed away 2000 years ago.

If we go by this thinking, my father-in-law died two years before my child was born, to them he was never a real live person, just a man in the picture that daddy tells them stories about. Maybe they should not believe he ever existed.
C’mon people get real here. The average child is around 7-8 when he/she starts to realize Santa doesn’t exist. Also most children recieve their First Commuion at that time, which means they are mature enough and understand fairytale and what’s real:)

Why are you so defensive? I wasn’t speaking about you personally. 🙂

Huh? Did you read what I wrote or did you just see “passed away” and then click reply? I didn’t say that we should deny the previous existence of humans that are now deceased. Please re-read my post, or did you intend to reply to something else?

Yes. Don’t tell me how to raise my child and I won’t tell you how to raise yours.
Let’s not get catty here. We all are entitled to our opinions and assuming what someone might have meant is probably not a good idea.

No sir. You are not.

I had a 12 year old nephew pull my aside at a big Christmas eve party to ask me if Santa was real. I decided right then and there to give my kids the scoop as early on as possible.

Against my wife’s wishes I told each of my kids the truth about Santa, and I’m glad I did.

yes I read your post and I think it is so silly that people in general, not personally you, seem have this idea that children are so stupid that when they grow up they can’t tell the difference between fairytales and Teachings of the Church. If we instill the Teaching of the Catholic Church and show them Love for Jesus, then a silly little tale like Santa should not make a difference.
Let kids be kids and enjoy the magic and sweetness in their eyes.

Not defensive, just speaking to you from experience:) 26 years so far;)
You said (clicking on to my post) “you need to know what your getting into” sorry if you felt this way not intended to:o

I agree, why spoil it for them? Unlike many of the Church’s teachings, the stories of Santa Claus are harmless. I figured out that the stories of Santa Claus could not possibly be true around the time of kindergarten or first grade. But even after that, Christmas was still fun. Catholicism took a little longer. That may have been due to the fact that many of the adults around me seemed to believe in the idea of God and the teachings of the Church so that influenced my young mind a bit. When I was in around the third or fourth grade though I realized that almost all of the biblical stories were mythology and I think I completely rejected the idea of God a few years after that.

Sorry to hear that, but I wish you a Merry Christmas 🙂

I wasn’t being catty. Honestly if someone feels allowing their kids to believe in Santa is wrong then it’s their right to raise them that way.

The poster made a pretty strong statement against it including using the word “evilness”. Every year we get posts about how Santa steals the meaning of Christmas and parents are wrong to allow it. The kids are going to grow up to be atheists and all that.

I don’t tell people they absolutley should allow their kids to believe in Santa and I don’t think they’re evil if the chose tell their children Santa is myth.

I believe childhood fantasy is a very important part of being a kid and that is how I chose to raise my daughter. I was allowed to believe in Santa and it did absolutely no damage. Such strong statements about lying and such are obnoxious and I just stated my opinion.
