An Italian mayor has caused controversy after saying that anyone who shouts “Allahu Akbar,” or “God is great” in Arabic, in the main square of the northern city of Venice, will be shot on the spot.

Luigi Brugnaro, a right-wing politician, was speaking about extremism at a conference in the city of Rimini. He said that Venice was a safer place than Barcelona, with greater security measures in place. newsweek.com/shouting-allahu-akbar-venice-will-get-you-shot-mayor-says-654401

Venice doesn’t have any car traffic, so for that reason alone it’s probably safer.

I was just in Venice and it felt very safe. Also, there are a ton of beautiful churches.

And sadly, pick pockets (at least back in the mid 80’s…)

What a great place to get lost in, though. I’m sure Dubrovnik is nice, too.

As long as you don’t say “God is great” in the wrong language, then it appears you’d be less safe.

“Allahu Akbar” means “God is greater” and is meant to signify that no human power is greater than that of the divine. It is something a Christian could shout with absolute sincerity. It is the mark of a grave evil operating in the world that this proclamation has become so distorted that is now has a worse connotation than “Heil Hitler” the Nazi salute.

I think what he meant was that an Islamic terrorist would be shot by the time he or she could shout “Allahu Akbar”. Nevertheless, it must be a source of great shame for peaceful Muslims to have this phrase associated with terrorism. I know it bothers me whenever the phrase “Jesus is Lord” (Iesous Kyrios) is associated with intolerance or bigotry.
