The Third Crusade was a failure, like all that followed the First. Secular lords and power squabbles took away from a genuinely noble mission, the relief of persecuted Christians. If that is barbarism in your eyes, just call me Conan
Does not in any way cleanse the corruption that was rampant during those times. Your original claim was that your classics came from such times and you
uphold those times to better than any civilization that had existed. Face it, your precious medieval period was just as messed up as any other so quit using it as a reason to put your music on a pedestal.
I know the Medieval era was often depraved. Turn of the millenium Europe was a real gem. But, the “Age of Faith” was not named so for no reason, and the High Middle Ages paint a picture of Catholic civilization that would make any modernist hold his head in shame. Again, I refer you to Pernoud, Carroll, and Belloc.
And I have studied this on the academic level as well, not that it is any of your concern.
Really? I hear that “Europe” also included its colonies back then. Again, I would just loooove to cite my history textbook on how wonderful those “turn of the century Spaniards” were. Oh, and I think I may even have a photocopy regarding the British domination of India somewhere around here. You should read stuff like that sometimes, it might fix those rose-tinted (or should I say stained?) glasses you have whenever you look for something about those times.
Going back to the medieval period, I find the pictures painted by Miguel de Cervantes (and perhaps Monty Python) to be more believable. Such periods wouldn’t have died out if they didn’t have flaws that defied reason and democracy.
Who said it wasn’t? Again with the assumptions about us “crackers”. I bet you think you know everything about White folks.
Wow, and who was playing the race card again? Its nice how you think the Church is universal yet claim that the medieval civilization of ignorant monarchies and bumbling chivalry somehow embodies it. Its like saying the kung fu culture embodies Buddhism or something.
Those who did were labeled by secular jerks, not the religious, who cared for lepers and the poor. Much like secularists today, we can thank them for the worst.
Does not change the fact of arbitrariness. Standards of morality =/= standards of art.
You can prove the former, but if you even just had the slightest taste of studying semiotics (be it via linguistics, literary theory, art theory etc), you’d be hard pressed to prove the latter.
Very naive to trust historians so blindly. Besides, I was talking about the pope’s learned opinions on music, not your country.
Oh so assuming to know more than the Pope on a subject that he actually may
not be knowledgeable about is tantamount to heresy or something? Wow gee, I didn’t know we Catholics are suppose to make him god-like and all knowing.
Just because he’s the Pope doesn’t mean every tiny aspect of our lives (and of human civilization) is in his jurisdiction. I certainly don’t look to him as an authority on science, cooking, literature, fashion (or even gaming, comics, and fantasy fiction). The only exception is when he’s actually
proven to be an expert in those fields (not that any human being is capable of being an expert on
everything).
I might as well require you to prove you know more about the Middle Ages than actual scholars in the field (not cultural Marxists in a university and not someone who happened to take a few classes that in all likelihood were taught by such), but you already think you do, so there’s no point discussing this with you any further.
LOL! I attend a Jesuit university mister. Despite finding a lot of pro-Catholic stuff in their library, they’re not shy of exposing the medieval mistreatment European colonizers gave the “savages”. Fun Phil. History fact: Spanish rule started here roughly around the 1500s and lasted for about 300 years. That covers a
lot of years and a
lot of things your so-called “civilized” European culture did to my country.
So, it’s ego, then. Interesting. Unsurprising, but interesting.
Well, go feed your ego somewhere else. I’m done with our argument.
