I thank the Herald for posting this article. I never knew this part of Dorothy Day’s story, and though she made some awful choices, she also made some very good ones.

Imagine the shame she must have felt as a Catholic, and even to be an unwed mother in those days! Yet, God lifted her from her shame and she did so much to make the world a better place.
 
I’ve been an admirer of Ms. Day (and Peter Maurin, and the Catholic Worker in general) my whole life.

I have this fantasy that Pope Francis will announce her canonization during his visit to New York, and not at St. Patrick’s, but at Maryhouse, the Catholic Worker’s residence for women in the East Village (where Day herself lived).
