As 18 doves flew into the skies over the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament Saturday night, more than 100 diverse Sacramentans blessed copies of the Quran with roses of love.

Again and again they uttered the refrain, “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me” at the entrance to the downtown church framed by white statues of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. A musician with a white guitar accompanied them.

Representatives of Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, B’hai, Mormon, Sikh, Vedic Druid and Muslim beliefs read scriptures from the great religious texts - including six verses from the Quran calling for all faiths to live in harmony.

Verdict Druid ? No doubt they were plagiarized from the pages of the lord of the rings.
The only others verses from holy texts other than Christian ones, which deserve respect are the Jewish ones. All the others should be used as toilet paper.

:doh2:

There’s nothing more offensive, than people who are too willing to not offend ANYONE. :banghead:

Talk about not standing up for the Faith, I guess we’re just one of many, to those involved.

Pray that those Catholics wake up. :signofcross: Although, this is just something by a few people, which the media happily reports cos’ it’s farcical. I’m just ashamed it had to be at the Cathedral.

I may get slammed for this, but - - - - -
  1. Blessing the Koran was going too far…But
  2. Seeing a leader of the Muslim community speak out that 9/11 was a day of “infamy and darkness” is a good thing.
  3. This same leader went on to say, “Indeed, blessed are the peacemakers,” said Haq, who read a prayer from St. Francis of Assisi: “Oh God make me an instrument of your peace … Where there is hatred let me sow love!”
If such voices from within the Muslim community are heard more often, it could do much to isolate the radical terrorists from mainstream muslims.

Peace
James

It’s one thing to be opposed to burning Quarans and just letting people worship as they see fit, but does something like this really need to be going on? This type of nonsense just needs to be cut out. We don’t need to burn or deface other faiths’ holy books but we also don’t need to bring them into our churces and bless them and do readings from them.

I wonder if something like this would’ve been allowed to occur at the worship sites of the other religions mentioned or if it had to happen at a church because Christians are the only ones that would allow something like this to happen where they worship?

Sadly, a suggestion I’ve read that was made about our Catholic Catechism. Better we respect the religious books of other faiths than be part of denigrating any of them. 😦

Are they naive, or downright stupid?
Itd send a (lets hope unintended) message to the Muslims et al that these Catholics don`t take their Faith seriously enough.
Ooey gooey muddle-headed sentimental slop!
So much for the God-given intellect!

Thanks be to God the Bishop of Cordoba refused to allow the church to be used by Muslims.
Wonder whether the ultra-left wing anti-Christian “Government” over there will try to intimidate the faithful Bishop.

I don’t think a Catholic priest should bless the Koran. On the other hand, getting together with people of other faiths to worship the one God in a way that all religions agree on seems like a nice idea.

Then they should at the very least pick a neutral location, a park for example, not a building dedicated to the one true God. Are druids the ones that used to dance naked in circle at stonehedge or were those wiccans? Next thing you know they’ll be inviting satanists and voodoo priests to attend. Am not sure where santeria fits in but hey lets all be buddies.

I’d heard about an attempt a few years back about Muslims attempting to say their prayers there and were rebuffed by the local bishop. I didn’t realize that they were still at it.

I particularly like the bishop’s response that allowing the Muslims to worship in the cathedral would be like sharing your wife with another man.

and then there was the attempt by some Muslims to pray there that ended with two guards being seriously injured when the worshippers attacked the guards.

Granted that I live in a small town but are all the larger cities getting interfaith directors?

How is blessing Korans a violation or in keeping with UNITATIS REDINTEGRATIO? Is the sacramento event a sign of more things to come?

I’ve defended the Muslims in the past, in their right to build mosques and whatnot, but Catholic priests should not be blessing the scriptures of another religion. We’re Catholics not namby-pamby winging Proddies.

As I’ve written before, I concede that Muslims worship one God.
But that is all.
The Koran is profane, worldly.
Mohammad was a false prophet who continues to guide a people falsely.
“Ye shall know them by their fruits.”
And the things that come of Islam have been mixed to be charitable, overwhelmingly bloody to be objective.
History indicts this profane religion.
Its scriptures may have been blessed, but blessing does not change anything.

The scandals will never end will they?
As a parishoner of the Parish of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Sacramento, CA - where this ridiculous and blasphemous action took place, I offer my comments:

I don’t know if this action had our Bishop Jaime Soto’s blessing (no pun intended) - I hope not; I sent the Bishop an e-mail inquiring a little while ago, and he hasn’t yet responded.
The priest involved is a Franciscan (OMF) Fr Gerabaldi, pastor (I believe) of the St Francis of Assisi parish in Sacramento. He has been a thorn in the site of Bishop Soto’s previous two successors - has allowed Gays to meet to discuss their lifestyle on Church property (against the previous bishop’s wishes) and is known for his assinine liturgical ‘innovations’. I’ve asked Bishop Soto to have the Franciscans removed from the Sacramento diocese, in order to restore unity in the local Church.
In any case, if you have seen the pictures Fr Garabaldi, he is dressed wearing a purple chasuable (it should have been green - to fit the liturgical season - actually), if he wanted to attend, he should have shown up wearing his Franciscan habit, along with the sandals.
It is my understanding, that the heretic act did not take place inside the Cathedral (it was locked, uncharacteristicly - which leads me to believe, it was not sanctioned by the Church/bishop).
I suggested to Bishop Soto to invite the local muslim leadership to ‘bless’ our Bible, publicly and infront of their mosque, in response to this act - and I wished him good luck with that … it will never happen!
In any case, no official of the Catholic Church should bless a book that denies the divinity of Christ, or encourages the murder of us ‘infidels’. When muslims recognize the right of Christians to worship freely and openly in majority muslim countries and allow adherants to their philosophy to convert to Christianity (or Judaism), then I am interested in what they (or their naive defenders, even if they are ordained folks) have to say - otherwise, I’m keeping my powder dry - prepared to defend my faith, with my life, if necessary. Collectively, Christians have turned the other cheek way too many times to this evil theocratic polical organization called ‘islam’. They want us convert, or die. Well, I’m not converting, and I’m not ready to roll over and die, either! Lastly, I am not subscribing to the notion that the ‘god’ of islam is the same as the God of Christianity (or Judaism). God bless the Catholic Church, Bishop Soto of Sacramento and our country.

‘Who turning, said to Peter: Go behind me, Satan, thou art a scandal unto me: because thou savourest not the things that are of God, but the things that are of men.’

Matthew 16:23

‘It were better for him, that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should scandalize one of these little ones.’

Luke 17:2

“The majority of people don’t want other people’s holy objects to be desecrated,” said Father Anthony Garibaldi of St. Francis Parish in Sacramento. “As a Christian, we don’t wanna do anything that we ourselves wouldn’t want. I wouldn’t want anybody desecrating the Bible.”

I believe in “To you, your religion. And to me, mine” (a quote from the Qur’an, Surah 109 - “The non-believers”). However, incorporating other religions and their texts into yours is pushing the line. All Catholics should be peaceful and respectful to others and their religions (unless it directly attacks Catholicism in a way that would physically hurt Catholics), but you should never incorporate their misguidance into your Divine Guidance.

I, too, am a member of the Diocese of Sacramento, although in a different parish a bit farther south. As an aside, having moved from a different part of California, I have found the Sacramento Diocese very conservative, compared to other areas.

The “blessing” was outside of the Cathedral, not inside. The Cathedral is in central downtown Sacramento (Calif. state capitol) and is used for many local events, not all of which are strictly Catholic nor strictly “religious.”

The reasons for the “blessing” were given in the SacBee article and I don’t see how anyone can object to a brief ceremony celebrating and promoting peace when the Florida pastor could easily have set off an international incident costing many lives by his *hatred *for Muslims. It’s still okay not to hate Muslims, isn’t it?

Father Garibaldi is indeed pastor of St. Francis Church, which is Franciscan, and it is a welcoming home to the very large gay community that shares the same neighborhood. We talk, talk, talk about how we “love the sinner but hate the sin” – St. Francis church is one that really does love “the sinner” – which is all of us.

St. Francis also supports several ministries to the poorest of the poor – including one that I worked with a few years ago, providing breakfast to the homeless who SLEEP ON THE CHURCH STEPS. They staff the city’s largest homeless shelter and their ministries are not bound by rigid laws and conventions. They minister more along the lines of “love your neighbor as yourself…” Hmmm…where have we heard that before?

Here’s the link to the parish if you really want to be shocked: Be sure and read the “why I attend St. Francis” section – people come from many miles away to attend this parish – they even like the music.
stfrancisparish.com/

Their liturgies would, of course, make the friends of CAF turn purple and burp the Kyrie backwards, but they are among the most beautiful, authentic, loving and Spirit-filled I’ve ever worshiped with. God help us, they even have a Taize’ service weekly. Surely the sky will fall.

Liturgically and sacramentally, I’m sure the Koran “blessing” was nothing more than a gesture of peace done in contrast to the hate-monger in Florida, and it was done as we commenorated an attack on the US, while we fight in Afghanistan and face heaven knows what other tragedies in the future. So it made some feel-good Catholics and non-Catholic people feel pretty good for 10 minutes – so what? I can’t think that God was highly offended. Doesn’t our Pope and the Catechism have kind words for Islam? Seems to me they do. Wait… don’t we worship the same God? Not, of course, the same theologically, but the same nevertheless.

Here – check out the Sacramento Diocese – I think you’ll find it’s reasonably orthodox.

I pray that is the case and that this blessing of a heathen book is just a mistake by a lone priest that should have known better.

another reason not to mix with the secular world. Keep those things reserved for God for God.

hate the sinner love the sin as you said. Islam is of the devil but we are willing to love those who follow it by bringing them over to the true faith. The door is wide open come on in.

Ok, what efforts has he made to guide his flock to give up an abominable “lifestyle”?

Are some of those rigid laws that you speak of called the TEN COMMANDMENTS, one of which says you shall not have any other gods before me.

post some clips. What the hell is a taize service? If its some strange noncatholic service could you post some pictures?
