10/8/08) The ad asked viewers to “help us donate 1,000,000 condoms now.”
Online college student newspapers hosted by College Publisher (The College Media Network) displayed an advertisement for Trojan Condoms on October 7, 2008. The ad asked viewers to “help us donate 1,000,000 condoms now.” Forty-two student newspaper sites of Catholic colleges had such ads.
In the contract agreed to by participating colleges, it states that the “Company represents and warrants that it shall not sell any advertising positions on the Site or in e-News emails in connection with the Site promoting cigarettes and tobacco products, beer and alcoholic beverages, prescription drugs, ‘900’ numbers, guns, gambling and other weapons and religious and political oriented advertisers.” However, according to Mike Schoelch of the College Media Network, “This clause is not negotiable because with over 630 publications it is impossible to have them choose the ads.” Therefore, schools that chose to host their student newspaper with College Publisher have no recourse when advertisements for other offensive products, like Trojan Condoms, appear on their site.
Here is a list of schools whose student newspaper websites, hosted by College Publisher, were found to have advertisements for Trojan Condoms on October 7, 2008:
Notre Dame de Namur University, The Argonaut; St. Mary’s College of California, Collegian; Santa Clara University, The Santa Clara; Regis University, The Highlander; Sacred Heart University, The Spectrum; Georgetown University, The Georgetown Independent; Loyola University of Chicago, The Phoenix; Lewis University, Flyer ; St. Ambrose University, The SAU Buzz; Bellarmine University, The Concord; Loyola University - New Orleans, The Maroon; College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Columns; Loyola College, The Greyhound; Mount Saint Mary’s University, Mountain Echo; Boston College, The Heights; Merrimack College, Beacon; Assumption College, Le Provocateur; College of the Holy Cross, Crusader; Avila University, Talon; Rockhurst University, The Sentinel; St. Louis University, St. Louis University News; Saint Anselm College, The Crier; The College of Saint Rose, The Saint Rose Chronicle; Fordham University, The Ram; Saint John’s University New York,The Torch Online; St. John’s University, The Humanities Review; Fordham University, Fordham Observer; St. Bonaventure University, The Bona Venture; Holy Family University, The Tri-Lite; Saint Joseph’s University, The Hawk; Duquesne University, The Duquesne Duke; Cabrini College, Loquitur; Villanova University, The Villanovan; Salve Regina Univesity, Mosaic; Providence College, the Cowl; University of Dallas, University News; University of Saint Thomas, Cauldron; Seattle University, Seattle University Spectator; Gonzaga University,Gonzaga Witness; Gonzaga University, The Bulletin; St. Norbert, St. Norbert Times; Marquette University, The Marquette Tribune.

Compare this to the list of schools that are faithful to Holy Mother Church. Duquesne is near us and I went there for post grad work. I would never consider it for my children or grandchildren. No surprise here.

Am I reading the article correctly? I thought the newspapers subscribed to a service that provided them with ads and subsequently “found” the Trojan ad in the papers? In that case, the newspapers would not have been responsible for putting the ad in themselves, but would now be responsible for finding another ad source??? If so, it will be interesting to see who fires the provider.

Those that place the ads do so with the understanding as to what is and is not allowed. You can decide if this was a mistake. Not one of these schools are on the list of universities that follow Holy Mother Church. You decide.

The University of Dallas and the University of St. Thomas are on the NC Register Catholic Identity College list. The others don’t look familiar. It will be interesting to see what they do with it.
